More Buffet News:

We'd just completed our monthly round-up of buffet changes for the LVA newsletter, which is now live and ready to read online, when a wave of updates flooded our in box, the latest being the addition of the option of unlimited champagne/Bloody Marys (with breakfast/brunch) or wine (with dinner) for an additional $6/person at Aria. They upped the price of breakfast, too.

Show News:

R-J entertainment columnist Mike Weatherford reports that producers David Saxe and Sirc Michaels are working to bring off-Broadway comedy The Awesome '80s Prom to the space in V Theater being vacated by Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding, while Dirty Joke Show will find a new home at the King's Room at the Rio starting June 8.

Buffet Name Change, Price Hike:

Do we sense another "de-theming" in the works? The Roundtable Buffet has changed its name to Excalibur Buffet and has also raised its prices by $1 for breakfast and lunch and $2 for dinner, which is now $22. Luxor's prices are also being raised to match those at its sister property's buffet, while the TAKE2 Pass (formerly the Hopper) has also gone up $3 to $35.

Las Vegas This Weekend:

It's a quiet one, following the insanity of Memorial Day weekend -- but when we say quiet, that's only by Vegas standards. Here are some of the highlights: Gilbert Gottfried's back at the Riviera (5/30-6/3) The Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend is underway at the Orelans (5/31-6/3) Debbie Reynolds performs at South Point (6/1-6/3) Wayne Brady entertains at the Mirage (6/1-6/2) And The Ultimate Fighter Finale takes place at the Pearl inside the Palms (6/1) Pool Scene: The Aggrolites perform at the Bikinis, Bands & Burgers party at Silverton's Sway Pool (6/2) The weekly Country Pool Party at the Suncoast welcomes the Seth Turner Band (6/2) And the Black Cards perform at the Nectar Music Series at the Hard Rock (6/2)

Holly Out at Peepshow:

Following recent rumors of a fall-out between the ex-Playmate and fellow Strip performer and reality-show personality Angel Porrino, comes confirmation that Holly Madison will leave her headlining role in Peepshow December 30. There's been no word yet as to who her replacement will be.

Cantor Cancels IPO:

Cantor Entertainment Technology Inc., an affiliate of Cantor Fitzgerald that operates a mobile gaming system, has withdrawn its plans for an IPO, reports today's R-J, citing its intention to submit a new registration confidentially at an undisclosed later date. The company, which has posted losses of approximately $96.6 million since it was founded in 2004, had announced last December that it would seek to raise up to $100 million in an initial public offering of its Class A common stock in 2013.

Bonus Points at Stations:

This Friday, June 1 through Saturday, June 2 will be the next Bonus Point Days at Station Casinos, with Boarding Pass members earning 6 bonus points for every dollar spent on video poker and 10 points for every dollar on all slots.

Obama Back to Vegas:

President Obama is scheduled to return to Las Vegas June 7 for an event at UNLV. Details of the trip have not yet been made public.

Win for Ohio Gambling:

A judge this week dismissed a lawsuit blocking Ohio's racetracks from operating slot machine-like video lottery terminals, which is good news for Nevada's slot machine industry, which is expected to provide the state's seven racetracks with up to 17,500 games. Racetracls operated by Caesars Ent., Pinnacle, and Penn National are expected to open casinos at their facilities. The ruling came the day after the new Hollywood Toledo, Ohio's second casino, opened for business.

Ellis Karaoke Challenge:

Starting this weekend, Ellis Island casino is hosting the "Ellis Icon" Karaoke challenge with the chance to win a top prize of $10,000. Sign ups are open at the promotions booth from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 8 p.m. Sunday each week for that week only. Rounds begin Sunday June 3rd at 9 p.m. and will run every Sunday and Tuesday until August 21st. Visit the Ellis Island Facebook page for full contest rules.

Free Steak for Out-of-Towners:

Hooters is running its free steak deal for members of the Owl Player Rewards Club who have out-of-state I.D. -- just purchase a $2.50 beverage to take advantage of this offer Thursday through Sunday. The new Joystixx gamer's arcade and bar is hosting its first Wii bowling tournament tomorrow night from 9 p.m., too.

Signing at Mob Museum:

Crime writer Cathy Scott, author of best-seller The Killing of Tupac Shakur, will be answering questions and signing books at the Mob Museum from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. Ex-cop Debra Gauthier will also be signing copies of Bright Lights, Dark Places, her account of being a female on the Vegas force for more than two decades.

TV Stage Show Updates:

Drew Lachey will return to host The Price Is Right Live at Bally’s from June 6–17, while we've just learned that Dancing With the Stars Live, currently performing at the Trop, will now be extended though early August, but tickets for the newly announced dates are not yet on sale.

Garth on Sale:

Country star Garth Brooks has announced a new slew of performances at Encore through November. Tickets, available via Ticketmaster outlets only, go on sale June 9 at 10 a.m. PST.

New Eatery for Palms:

Robin Leach is reporting that Planet Hollywood owner Robert Earl has greenlit construction on an Earl of Sandwich venue for the Palms, with a late June/early July opening slated.

Good Gig at South Point:

South Point hosts the regular Tuesday night concert tonight featuring trumpet player David Perrico and his 18-piece band, and this evening guest stars Frankie Moreno and Laura Shaffer will be sitting in. Drinks and cover are just $2.

Another Chance for Strip Club?:

Crazy Horse Too topless club, whose former owner Rick Rizzolo is currently serving a jail sentence for parole violations, may yet be given a new lease on life. Las Vegas City Councilman Bob Coffin has announced his intention to introduce an amended zoning ordinance next month that would pave the way for the property, which has been closed for the past five years, to reopen as a topless club. According to the terms of Coffin's proposal, current owners Canico Capital will agree to pay the city a $1.5 million fine still on the books from the days of Rizzolo's ownership, funds that the councilman intends to divert to Kirk Henry, a Kansas City-area tourist paralyzed after a fight at the club back in 2001.

With the WSOP underway across the street from our office, appropriately enough this week's column finds video poker expert Bob Dancer inspired by poker pro Daniel Negreanu to address the subject of the financial considerations any professional gambler needs to take into account.

Station Fireworks:

Station Casinos has announced that it will again host the largest fireworks show in Las Vegas on the 4th of July. The nine-minute display will emanate from Aliante, Texas, GVR, Red Rock, and Fiesta Rancho.

Double Switch at the Wynn:

A new Japanese restaurant called Mizumi has opened at the Wynn in the space that was formerly Okada. It was announced last month that the restaurant there would be called Ohtaki, but apparently a Mizumi trumps an Ohtaki.

First Bracelet Event:

Due to the timing with the three-day weekend, huge crowds are expected to descend on the Rio for today's $1,500 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament -- the first official open WSOP gold bracelet event of the 43rd series.

Happy Memorial Day:

While most of the action is out at the pools today, there are lots of Memorial Day deals inside the casinos. The Palms buffet is half price today when you show your players card. El Cortez is handing out free White Castle hamburgers to players. The Silverton buffet is $5 all day. South Point is giving active and retired military personnel a free buffet for themselves and one guest. Both Silverton and South Point are awarding 5X points on slots and 2X on video poker -- they're next to each other on I-15, so you can easily play both.

Franchitti Wins Indy 500:

British driver Dario Franchitti, husband of actress Ashley Judd, won the Indianapolis 500 today for the third time. As with previous Indy 500 victories, he won the race under caution.

National Wine Day:

Today is national wine day, and while you'd expect that might have some interesting implications in Las Vegas, we've heard of only one promotion. R Steak & Seafood at the Riviera is running a 2-for-1 deal today on wines by the glass. Keep your eyes open and you're likely to find others.

New Jersey Pushing for Sports Betting:

It looks like New Jersey will go all the way in its challenge of a 1992 law barring sports betting in all but four states. Governor Chris Christie says that the state will go forward with plans for allowing betting at Atlantic City casinos and four racetracks, and has all but dared the federal government (and the NFL) to "try to stop us." The feds have the power to do just that, but the bold stance could eventually clear the way for an amendment to the law.

Rich Little Extends:

Due to the show's popularity, legendary comedian and impressionist Rich Little has announced that his Jimmy Stewart & Friends show, currently performing for a limited engagement at LVH, has been extended through July 4, 2012. The show performs Sat. – Weds. at 8:30 p.m. in the Shimmer Cabaret and tickets start at $53.90.

Shuffle Up and Deal:

The 43rd annual World Series of Poker gets underway at noon today at the Rio, with the Casino Employees Event that brings together players from all over the nation. The 61-event WSOP schedule runs through July 16. Look for extended coverage at LVAPoker.com

UFC dos Santos/Mir:

Junior dos Santos is a big 4.5-1 favorite to retain his heavyweight championship over Frank Mir in tonight's main event. In the other big match, Cain Velasquez is a 3.5-1 favorite over Antonio Silva.

Neil to Rock Fremont:

Tonight from 9 p.m., Mötley Crüe front man Vince Neil will be rocking the 3rd Street Stage on Fremont Street as part of the free "Rock of Vegas" summer concert series.

Jazz in the Park:

This year's Jazz in the Park series kicks off tonight with guitarist Jeff Golub. The free concert at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater (500 S. Grand Central Pkwy.) begins at 7:30.

Tahoe Beach:

In a USA Today list of "51 Great American Beaches," the choice from Nevada was Zephyr Cove: "Pine-cone-flecked golden sand, towering forests, and deep cobalt waters help Lake Tahoe's Zephyr Cove compete with ocean beaches across the country." We can vouch that it's certainly among the most scenic.

Miracle Mile Happenings:

Today, from noon to 2 p.m., UFC fighters Chael Sonnen and Chad Mendes will host a meet and greet with fans at Las Vegas Fight Shop in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. The event is free and open to the public. Artist Michael Godard will also host an art show at his Oh My Godard Gallery from 6 to 9 p.m. today, during which Godard will meet with fans and sign autographs.

Memorial Day Events:

It's one of the biggest weekends of the year in Las Vegas and the start of the summer season. Station Links BJ Progressive:

Station Casinos has launched a blackjack progressive that links nine properties. Shuffle Master’s "Hit and Run Progressive" $1 side bet at Boulder Station, Fiesta Henderson, Fiestas Rancho, Green Valley Ranch, Palace Station, Red Rock, Santa Fe Station, Sunset Station, and Texas Station is now linked to a single progressive blackjack jackpot, based solely on if the dealer hits blackjack or a hand consisting of five or more cards, with the main jackpot paid for an 8-card dealer hand. As of May 25, the progressive jackpot on the Double Deck Hit and Run games is over $10,500 and the Shoe Hit and Run games are at over $15,400.

Poker Season Underway:

Two new major poker tournaments kick off today, in the run up to Sunday's launch of the WSOP. Caesars' Mega Stack Series runs May 25 through July 16, while Binion's Poker Classic gets underway downtown, running through July 8. The Venetian's Deep Stack Extravaganza began May 24, and the Golden Nugget's Grand Poker Series runs from June 2 to July 4. For full current poker-tournament listings, click the link.

Passenger Traffic Still Rising:

The passenger count at McCarran International Airport was up for the 16th month straight in April, with a 2.7 percent increase on the same month in 2011. Allegiant and Continental in particular experienced significant upticks in passenger volume.

Downtown Third Farmers Market:

It's Friday, which means it's Downtown 3rd Farmers Market time from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with organic and local produce, artisanal foods, gourmet food trucks, a kid's craft zone, and more. The market's located on the corner of Casino Center and Stewart, right next to the Mob Museum.

Future for White Cross Drugs:

Following Tuesday's Question of the Day comes a timely announcement in today's R-J that the historic former White Cross Drugs building is to be transformed this summer into White Cross Market, a grocery store servicing the downtown area that will offer fresh produce, packaged meats, frozen foods, a deli with cold cuts and a variety of cheeses, and a liquor section.

$1 Drinks at PBR Rock Bar:

PBR Rock Bar inside the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood is kicking off the Memorial Day party early, with $1 drinks for locals tonight from 9 p.m. to midnight. Festivities will continue throughout the weekend, with a continuation of the month-long celebration of National BBQ Month featuring 15% off barbecue menu items from 3 to 6 p.m.

Stupak Moon Dust Returned:

An attorney for the late Bob Stupak has returned to NASA what are alleged to be several tiny chips of lunar rock which, if real, were brought back by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and came into the flamboyant Las Vegas casino entrepreneur's hands via a circuitous route which started with President Richard Nixon gifting them to former Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza Garcia, from whom they were stolen by a Costa Rican mercenary soldier-turned Contra rebel, who traded them to a Baptist missionary, before they were eventually sold to Stupak for his "Sky's the Limit"-themed Vegas World. The property featured a giant mural on the front of the building, depicting astronauts and space stations, including a spaceman connected by umbilical to a roulette table. A space-walking astronaut and a replica Sky Lab hung from the ceiling and the buffet was called the Moon Rock, after the alleged lunar material on display. NASA is now taking steps to authenticate the display but has declined to comment on what the outcome of the findings might be. Stupak's attorney Richard Wright anticipates that if authentic, they'll be returned to Nicaragua and if not, they'll go back to him.

Green Accolade for Crystals:

Crystals, the high-end shopping mall at CityCenter, has earned the VIVA (Vision Innovation, Value and Achievement) "Best-of-the-Best" designation by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), the global trade association of the shopping center industry. The Las Vegas mall, part of the LEED-certified metaresort, is one of only three 2012 VIVA award winners in the world and was the gold pick in the "sustainability" category.

Elton Hospitalized:

Elton John, currently performing his Million Dollar Piano show at Caesars' Colosseum, has been forced to cancel his remaining May concerts, due to take place this weekend, following his hospitalization due to a serious respiratory infection, although he has now been released from hospital. The singer is not scheduled to perform in Las Vegas again until October.

Bad Air Day:

Clark County has issued a new air-quality warning, this time for dust, following yesterday's alert about smoke from northern Nevada wildfires. Expected high winds, with gusts of at least 40 mph, will increase the possibility of blowing dust evening through Friday night, although the wind is also likely to clear the lingering smoke from the valley. Updates on conditions will be posted at redrock.co.clark.nv.us/forecast.

Cosmo Sues Over Bogus Site:

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is suing a Chinese website operator, reports Vegas Inc., claiming the defendant it is operating a counterfeit version of the official Cosmo site. This follows a move earlier this month by Las Vegas Sands Corp., which filed suit in the same court after discovering a third party had put up a counterfeit version of its website.

Jabbawockeez to New (Temp) Home:

It's been announced that the Jabbawockeez dance show will debut in its new temporary Pavilion (adjacent to Monte Carlo's porte cochère) on Friday, June 8. Tickets, avilable now from the Box Office or all Ticketmaster outlets, start at $55, plus tax and fees. Performance times vary; the show will be dark Tuesday and Wednesday.

Reno Blaze Prompts Fire Restrictions:

A wildfire burning outside Reno has caused Federal officials, including the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, United States Forest Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to issue fire restrictions at government-owned or managed lands Wednesday. Click the link for details.

Cools on the Move:

"Adult" hypnotist Anthony Cools is temporarily locating from Paris to Bally's while his showroom is renovated. The show is currently dark, but from June 2 to July 1, Cools will perform at 9 p.m. nightly (dark Mondays and Wednesdays) and special ticket prices starting at $15 for general admission will be in effect.

New Nightlife Venue:

What was until recently Privilege gentlemen's and after-hours club (formerly Badda Bing!, among many other incarnations) has now reinvented itself once again as Oracle Mansion. Described on its Facebook page as a "Nightclub Ultra Hookah Lounge & Restaurant," the venue apparently consists of three distinct zones, with themed nights downstairs and a topless club upstairs. Or something like that. We'll have more info. very soon.

Fatal Accident Shuts Down 95:

One person was killed and another hospitalized today following a wreck on a U.S. 95 on ramp when the driver of a Jeep lost control and the vehicle overturned. The accident took place at Rancho and three right lanes of the northbound 95 were blocked following the crash. We'll keep you posted if we hear more.

RocketFrog Launches:

RocketFrog is an online startup aiming to merge the popularity of social networking and gambling, with a virtual casino on Facebook that offers real prize winnings, including movie tickets, music, and food offers, plus in-game gifts and achievements. Fight on Fremont:

Tomorrow night, catch Las Vegas superhost Steve Cyr, the inspiration behind Whale Hunt in the Desert, taking part downtown in the latest free fight card that pits members of Las Vegas' entertainment of nightlife scene against one another. Sponsored by the Golden Gate, the free event kicks off at 6 p.m. outside the hotel and a crowd of a couple of thousand fans are expected to turn out and support their fighters.

Rooftop Pool Parties:

Binion’s famous rooftop pool will be hosting a series of free summer "Kiss The Sky" parties, with DJs and drink specials, at the 25th-floor pool. The parties will take place every Friday night, starting at 9 p.m., from June 8 through August 31. Admission is free and drink specials will include $3 Miller Lite drafts, $3 Red Bulls, and $4.50 Bacardi cocktails and featured DJs include Mister Goodvybe, Megaman, Trens, Mark Mac, Wicked, and DJ Bambu Jessica.

Buffett Casino Opens:

Singer Jimmy Buffett's long-awaited Margaritaville Casino in Biloxi debuts today, with a party for invited guests from 5 p.m., and doors opening to the public at 8 p.m. The $62 million property comes after what's now Caesars Entertainment scrapped plans for a $700 million Margaritaville casino on the beach, announced back in 2007, due to the recession.

The Skyvue Commeth:

Tuesday morning, around 10 a.m., an escorted convoy of 12 semi-trucks will be arriving in Las Vegas from L.A., delivering the steel support cables for SkyVue Las Vegas, the first of the city's two projected observation wheels, which is set to become the largest in the Western Hemisphere. Construction is also now set to commence on the proeject's retail district, comprising a multilevel shopping center with 140,000 square feet of retail space and a food court.

Casino Robber Apprehended:

A man has been arrested in connection with an alleged heist that took place Saturday night at Bellagio, when two men apparently walked up to a blackjack table, sprayed the players with pepper spray, and grabbed 23 $5,000 chips before attempting to flee the scene. One of the alleged perpetrators was apprehended by casino security and held until Metro arrived; the other man escaped.

Solar Eclipse:

Today is the annular solar eclipse, when the moon blocks out most of the sun, and Silverton is holding a viewing for guests to witness the event. Beach Party at Ellis Island:

Nope, our friends at EI don't let the matter of a little desert get in the way of a beach party, and have imported sand especially for their second annual Summer Beach Party tonight. The fun kicks off at 5 p.m., with a hot dog-eating contest at 7 p.m., bikini contest at 9 p.m., and beer, BBQ, and food trucks for the duration.

Strip Zumbathon:

The Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip will be hosting a 2-hour Zumbathon from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. today, with all proceeds benefiting the Southern Nevada Burn Foundation and "You Got the Power", which assists women recovering from domestic violence.

Wicked Tix on Sale:

Gravel Spill Closes U.S. 95:

A large gravel spill is apparently tying up traffic along U.S. 95 northbound, from the Washington Boulevard overpass to Lake Mead Blvd., but the mess is expected to be cleaned up soon. In the meantime, northbound U.S. 95 is closed.

Bad Month for New Orleans:

Not a single New Orleans-area casino posted a revenue gain in April, in what nola.com describes as a "bloodbath." At just $50 million, the casino win was down 20 percent on March, which had one additional day. Statewide, Louisiana's land-based casino, four racetrack casinos, and 13 riverboats won nearly $191.5 million in April, a 16 percent slide from March and a 5.4 percent dip from April 2011.

Total Rewards Promo Finale:

The 90-day "Escape to Total Rewards" promotion from Caesars Entertainment concludes this weekend, with nationwide giveaways at group properties. Buffett OK'd for MS Casino:

Jimmy Buffett received the final certification for his new Margaritaville Casino & Resort from the Mississippi Gaming Commission Thursday. The new property is set to open Tuesday in Biloxi. The ruling follows his March 22 approval from the Nevada Gaming Control Board for a casino license for his casino-within-a-casino at the Flamingo.

Newton Scheme in Hot Water:

As predicted by our esteemed Stiffs & Georges blogger in a recent QoD (see Archives 5/1/12), FoxNews.com reports that plans to open Wayne Newton's Casa de Shenandoah estate as a public attraction have become mired in an ugly legal battle, amid accusations of everthing from animal abuse to sexual harrassment. Apparently, the company that purchased the rights to convert and expand the property into "Graceland West" this week filed a lawsuit in Las Vegas against the Newton family, claiming they have unreasonably delayed the project to ensure it never opens, while the family has countered with claims that the lawsuit is a preemptive strike because they had planned to sue the company for breach of contract following multiple construction delays. Makeover for the Riv:

Riviera Holdings is to invest $20 million to $30 million to refurbish the historic Strip hotel, reports the R-J. Company executive Tullio Marchionne today made the announcement to the Nevada Gaming Commission today, stating that, "We have new management and owners. We are looking up. It's not to say it's still not a struggle living in our neighborhood," he added, however, located as it is to the stalled Fontainebleau and Echelon projects. The news comes on the back of a similar announcement for the currently-shuttered Sahara.

Firefly Takeover?:

According to today's USA Today, which describes Las Vegas as "probably the hottest food scene in the USA" and carries a feature all the booming tapas scene, Firefly has a fourth venue "coming soon to the Plaza Hotel and Casino downtown." Firefly, which last month debuted its new Henderson restaurant (located at 11261 S. Eastern Ave. and now serving Sunday Brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Firefly briefly operated out the space now occupied by Oscar's Steakhouse at the Plaza, but closed as part of the property's remodel. The food and beverage department there had heard nothing of Firefly returning, but did inform us that Tinoco's, the Italian restaurant and last remaining eatery at Vegas Club, closed quietly last week, so perhaps Firefly #4 is slated for that spot. We left a message with Firefly and will pass on what we hear.

New British Flights to Vegas:

Starting October 29, British Airways is rolling out a new three-times-a-week route from Gatwick to Las Vegas operated by a three-class Boeing 777, offering a premium Club World cabin with fully-flat beds. Together with the Heathrow service, this brings British Airways' total non-stop flights to Vegas to 10 a week.

Dust Advisory:

Clark County's Department of Air Quality has issued a dust advisory in anticipation of unhealthy levels of blowing dust expected to occur sometime this afternoon and through the evening. Southwest winds are expected to pick up late in the morning, with gusts of up to 40 mph expected. Children, the elderly, those with chronic respiratory conditions, and those who work outside are especially advised to take care and can monitor conditions at redrock.co.clark.nv.us/forecast.

US 95 Reopens:

All northbound and southbound lanes of US 95 near Boulder Highway are now open for traffic, having been closed for several hours this morning following a fatal accident involving a wrong-way driver.

Triple-Digit Time:

For the first time so far this year, Las Vegas officially hit 100 degrees today, according to the National Weather Service. Here we go...

Boyd to Buy Peninsula:

Boyd Gaming is to buy Peninsula Gaming for $1.45 billion, it's being reported. The move will give Boyd five additional properties in three states outside of its Nevada base, including Kansas and Iowa.

Highway Remains Closed:

We've now that the motorcylist was killed in the earlier crash on Boulder Highway the northbound lanes remain closed between Harmon and Flamingo as Metro investigates the accicdent. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

Accident Closes N-Bound Boulder Hwy:

"Fox5 News" is reporting that northbound lanes of Boulder Highway near Harmon Avenue have been shut down following an accident in front of the Sam's Town, said to involve a motorcycle and a vehicle, close to where a pedestrian was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver late Tuesday night. We'll keep you posted if we hear any more.

Ohio Gets First Casino:

After five statewide votes over 20 years, Ohio this week debuted its first casino. Horseshoe Casino Cleveland features about 2,100 slot machines, 63 table games, a 30-table World Series of Poker room, and a VIP lounge.

life.time.com has published a photo feature titled "Vintage Vegas: Rare Photos of a Desert Boomtown," which features images published in the June 20, 1955 issue of LIFE magazine, plus other unusual historic images of the infant city, including aerials of downtown, undeveloped plots in the desert, casino workers and players, and behind-the-scenes shots of showgirls. As the one-year anniversary of Station Casinos' emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy approaches, the company has posted a modest Q1 profit of $6.8 million, which compares with a loss of $11.8 million in the same period last year.

Gold Rush Closing:

We learned on the grapevine from an LVA reader that the little casino next to Sunset Station is scheduled to close at the end of the month, likely to be converted into another Wildfire facility, although that's just conjecture at this point. We'll keep you posted when we hear anything official from Station Casinos, which owns the property.

Racing Star Carroll Shelby Passes:

Carroll Shelby, failed-chicken-farmer turned car-racing legend, passed today, aged 89. Fans can visit the 100,000-square-foot Carroll Shelby Museum at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which features a number of his famous Cobras, old and new and where, at 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, you can also take a free 35- to 45-minute tour of the manufacturing plant.

Internet Game from MRI:

MGM Resorts International is to launch a casino-themed online game by June, chairman James Murren has announced. He said the game is unofficially called "Casino Mogul" but the actual name has not yet been decided upon. It will, like the Facebook game that Golden Nugget released in 2010, be similar to Farmville and other social media games, featuring a Las Vegas that features only MGM properties.

New Season, Restaurant for Ramsay:

TV chef Gordon Ramsay will launch the 10th season of "Hell's Kitchen" on Fox with 18 new competitors and a two-night season-premiere event on Monday, June 4 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) and Tuesday, June 5 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). The grand prize for the contestant who succeeds in making it through to the end is a head chef position at Gordon Ramsay Steak, which makes its much-anticipated debut today at Paris Las Vegas.

Divas on the Radio:

For the first time in 20 years, Joan Rivers tribute performer Frank Marino, whose Divas Las Vegas show performs at Imperial Palace, will get to hang out with the lady herself when he's the guest of Rivers' "Fashion Police" show on E! today, reports Norm! in the R-J. The pair previously were involved in a lawsuit over Marino's use of Rivers' material, but have since patched things up.

HP Author in Bikini Tug of War:

Gardunos Out at the Palms:

Garduno’s, the Mexican restaurant at the Palms that's been a Maloof signature brand since the Fiesta days, is closing to make way for a new sports-themed restaurant from The One Group (also behind the new Bagatelle pool brand at the Trop). The new venue, which will be named Heraea (evidently following the successful trend of hard-to-pronounce foreign names like "La Femme" and "Le Rêve", this one's also going for cultural obscurity) is due to open before the end of the year, reports Daily Fiasco.

Poker at the Nugget:

For the fifth consecutive year, downtown's Golden Nugget will host the Grand Poker Series, a month-long tournament kicking off June 2 and concluding July 4. The event will feature 270 tournaments, including omaha high/low, HORSE, Badugi, mixed games, 7 card stud, and no-limit hold ‘em events, plus cash games, special tournaments for seniors and ladies, and two signature bracelet events.

Locals Fantasy Offer:

World Football Challenge Coming to Vegas:

Casinos Take a Hit:

March gaming revenues were down in Nevada by almost 11 percent on the same month last year, according to the latest figures released by the Gaming Control Board. The results, which saw Strip winnings down by nearly 15 percent and a 12 percent drop downtown, reverses the past several months' trend of increased revenue on 2011 numbers.

Crash Closes I-15 Northbound:

Channel 8's "News Now" is reporting that a non-injury accident involving an overturned semi-trailer truck has closed the northbound I-15 just north of Lamb Boulevard, forcing traffic to use the shoulder of the freeway. The accident happened at 4:50 p.m. and there is currently no word when the interstate will be reopened.

Changes at WSOP:

The organizers of the 2012 World Series of Poker are introducing some changes to this year's event, which kicks off at the Rio May 27. Among the innovations will be an overturning of the rule that for the past five years has prevented players from discussing their cards and from celebrating a hand. Both will now be acceptable, within reason and at the discretion of the tournament directors, in an attempt to rekindle the energy that was felt to be lacking at last year's more subdued event. Also, several new bracelet events will be introduced, including an ante-only no-limit hold’em tournament for the first time ever. The buy-in is $1,500 for the event, which takes place June 27 and features no blinds.

Good News for Monorail:

The Las Vegas Monorail has finally been given the green light to exit Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, after a judge found Wednesday that financial projections were more realistic than the previous plan and had a good chance of coming to fruition.

Gaming Revenues Up:

Commercial casino gaming revenues rose for the second consecutive year in 2011, according to a national economic impact study released by the American Gaming Association. The annual State of the States: The AGA Survey of Casino Entertainment report shows national gross gaming revenues increased by 3 percent in 2011 from 2010 (when figures were up just under 1 percent on 2009) to a total of $35.64 billion.

Rockhouse to Venetian:

We just were informed by a @LVA_Tweet follower that Rockhouse's new permanent home will be at Venetian, where it's due to debut later this summer, after a temporary run in the Miracle Mile Shops. We'll keep you posted if/when we learn more.

Santana Update:

The Grammy-Award winning musician, who just kicked off a residency at House of Blues in Las Vegas, has announced May 15 as the date for his new album release. Every concertgoer who purchases a ticket for the May and June performances of the show will receive a collectable download card with a unique code for downloading a complimentary copy of "Shape Shifter." In addition, extra dates have been added to the performer's schedule for September and November, including Mexican Independence Day and dates throughout Latin GRAMMY Week.

Vegas Tops for Memorial Day:

According to online travel agency CheapOair, flights to Las Vegas are the most popular this Memorial Day weekend, pushing the city from last year's #3 position behind Miami and Denver. PA Casino to Change Hands:

Penn National Gaming has announced a deal to buy Harrah's Maryland Heights Casino from Caesars Entertainment for $610 million. The casino, which opened on the Missouri River in 1997, is the region's second-busiest by revenue.

Actually, he's back from it now, but that's the subject of this week's Bob Dancer column and, as usual, it's not your average trip report and there are lots of useful insights in there -- and some nudism.

Casino Greats Recognized:

Dennis Gomes, whose legendary career in the gaming industry included stints as both a casino owner and executive, and as a gaming regulator who uncovered the notorious Stardust "skim" and Sen. William J. Raggio, Jr., who has been called one of the greatest statesmen in Nevada history, both of whom passed earlier this year, have been named as two of the new inductees intothe American Gaming Association's Gaming Hall of Fame -- the highest honor accorded by the gaming-entertainment industry. The other two people to be honored this year are Guy Laliberté, the creative force behind Cirque du Soleil, and Chef Julian Serrano, a pioneer of Las Vegas fine dining who debuted Picasso at the Mirage in 1998 and whose eponymous restaurant at Aria has already been the recipient of several honors and awards. Both restaurants are included in the "Essential 50" restaurants featured in Eating Las Vegas (Picasso is a Top Ten pick). Congrats to all.

Queen of Soul to Colosseum:

Soul legend Aretha Franklin will perform for one night only at The Colosseum at Caesars on Sunday, July 15 at 7:30 p.m. She will be joined by special guest Jonathan Slocumb. Tickets, which start at $49.50, go on sale Friday, May 11 at 10 a.m.

History Comes to Forum Shops:

The shopping mall at Caesars Palace is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, while the Las Vegas News Bureau celebrates its 65th anniversary. To mark these occasions, the two have joined forces to present a photo-history of the Forum Shops, presented in three phases near the Fountain of the Gods; close to the Atlantis show and Aquarium; and on the second level, near the windows across from the spiral escalator. The three phases of the exhibit showcase the different eras and changes that have taken place since the high-end mall debuted in 1992.

Zombies on the Move ... Again:

Evil Dead the Musical, which first played the Onyx Theater in Las Vegas and was set to open any day now at The Insurgo Theater inside the Plaza, will now open June 22 in the V Theater inside Planet Hollywood. The show will run Friday and Saturday nights; times, ticket prices, cast list, and other details will be forthcoming soon.

The zipline attraction on Fremont Street is once again raising money for charity, this time in conjunction with the cast of Jersey Boys and to benefit the Neurofibromatosis (NF) Network. From noon to midnight today, Flightlinez and the Fremont Street Experience will donate all net revenue from zipline rides to NF Network, which helps families cope with the effects of this genetic disorder, for which there is currently no known cure.

Big Paychecks:

An article in today's LV Review-Journal lists the highest compensated executives in Las Vegas, and as expected, eight of the top 10 are from the gaming industry. Leading the list of gamers are Gary Loveman ($20.4 million), Steve Wynn ($16.5 million), and Sheldon Adelson ($13.8 million), but they came in behind Spectrum Pharmaceuticals boss, Rajesh Shrotriya ($25.2 million), who is the first non-gaming executive to occupy the top spot.

New Palms Sports Book:

The new sports book at the Palms is Cantor's best effort since its first at M Resort. Big screens of different sizes show multiple games simultaneously and there's an adjoining poker room at the front. It's located in the same space as the previous Palms book.

Drink & Drag Grand Opening:

The new Drink & Drag transvestite bowling alley and bar downtown celebrates its grand opening today with the initiation of "Super Gay Sundays." Specials include $1 drafts; $2 well drinks, bottled beers, and wine; $2 bar snacks; and $1 bowling from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Adieu Rockhouse:

Today we bid au review to Rockhouse, the Strip-side party bar at Imperial Palace, which is closing as part of the LINQ redevelopment. It's not RIP, however, as the venue is due to move to a temporary home in Miracle Mile Shops, while finding a new permanent residence.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a prohibitive 7-1 favorite over Miguel Cotto in tonight's championship bout. However, it's expected to be a long fight, with OVER 9.5 rounds lined at -275. The draw is as high as 45-1. In the premier prelim bout, Saul Alverez is a 6-1 favorite over Shane Mosley.

Konik on the Radio:

Huntington Press author Michael Konik was one of the featured guests on NPR's Snap Judgement show today. The episode is titled "Lady Luck" and Konik discusses notorious gambler Archie Karas and his legendary run at Binion's, one of the real-life stories in Man With the $100,000 Breasts.

UFC Miller/Diaz:

Jim Miller is a 2-1 favorite of Nate Diaz in tonight's UFC main event. In the other big match, money has come in steadily on Johny Hendricks, who is now a 3-2 favorite over Josh Koscheck.

Kentucky Derby Odds:

Bodemeister was the morning-line favorite at 4-1, but the public's wagering has changed that. The current favorite is Union Rags at 4.5-1, followed by Bodemeister at 7-1 and Gemologist at 8-1. The longshot in the 20-horse field is Liaison at 52-1.

Cinco de Mayo:

Along with the the Kentucky Derby promotions in the sports books, Cinco de Mayo celebrations are running everywhere. Get dollar margaritas at South Point, Cannery, and Jerry's Nugget. Big parties are taking place at Carlos'n Charlie's at Flamingo and Senor Frog's at TI, as well as at other Mexican restaurants and bars in and out of the casinos.

Some of the more notable ones include: South Point, where pro handicappers John Kelly, Patrick McQuiggan, Toby Turrell, and Tom Quigley will host a party inside the Grand Ballroom from 8 a.m. Make a $20 wager to receive a coupon for free food and drink. Rampart Casino will offer a "second-chance" drawing after the race, with the chance of picking up a prize for your losing ticket. Cantor Book Debuts at Palms:

The new Cantor Gaming race and sports book at the Palms opens today at noon. It's the group's fifth book in town and also features eight poker tables, offering live poker and live dealers.

PT's Gets Festive Early:

On the eve of Cinco de Mayo, today PT’s and Sierra Gold guests will have the chance to win a bottle of Don Julio Reservade tequila, gift cards, and more during the Fiesta de PT’s, with drawings taking place at each tavern at 6 p.m., 7 p.m., 8 p.m., 9 p.m., 10 p.m., 11 p.m., and 12 a.m. To win an envelope, players must hit a diamond flush or keno spot of five of six, six of seven, or seven of eight.

For the 18th consecutive year, Las Vegas remains the top trade-show destination in the U.S., according to the Trade Show News Network. Las Vegas retained its title having hosted 55 of the largest shows in 2011 -- more than the next two competitors combined.

New Surf Show:

Surf The Musical, centred on the music of the Beach Boys, is due to debut at Planet Hollywood in early June. Let's hope it's more successful than Point Break Live, the delibertately ludicrous show based on the cheesy Keanu Reeves surf movie that debuted in V Theater inm 2008 and closed within less than a week because the producers couldn't pay the rent.

Reduced Hours at MGM Eateries:

Nobhill Tavern by Michael Mina, Pearl, and Diego at MGM Grand have all cut their days from seven to five, with Nobhill now closed on Sunday and Monday, Pearl closed Tuesday and Wednesday, and Diego closed Monday and Tuesday. Hours have also been slightly reduced.

The event takes place tomorrow, but the location will remain secret until the last minute, when fans will be informed via the drink's Facebook page, so sign up if you want to be in-the-know. After the maximum number of tickets for each venue have been reserved, remaining fans will have the option to watch a live webcast of all 10 concurrent events on the BACARDÍ+ website and Facebook page. We do know that the Vegas event will feature The Hood Internet, with special guests.

Motocross Star at Miracle Mile:

Volcom inside the Miracle Mile Shops is hosting a meet-and-greet with 2011 American Motorcyclist Association Motocross Champion Ryan Villopoto at 6 p.m. today. The motocross/supercross star will be available to take photographs and sign autographs for fans. The event is free and open to the public.

Ramp Closures on I-15:

Several ramp closures and lane restrictions along Interstate 15 will be implemented tonight while paving crews pour concrete for the new Warm Springs Road bridge, due to open at the end of May. From 7 p.m. this evening to 5 a.m. Thursday, the ramps from Interstate 215 to southbound I-15 will be closed, along with the access roads. Traffic will be detoured to southbound Las Vegas Boulevard or Decatur Boulevard to Blue Diamond Road and onto I-15 south. Throughout the night, the southbound lanes of the freeway will be reduced to as few as two lanes, while from 7 p.m. until midnight, the new northbound access roads will be reduced to one lane and guided onto Interstate 15. Ramps to Interstate 215 from I-15 north will be closed. To access Interstate 215, take I-15 north to westbound Russell Road, where traffic will be detoured south on the new access roads and onto the 215. To access McCarran International Airport, take I-15 north to Tropicana Avenue. From midnight to 5 a.m. Thursday, the I-15 northbound will be reduced to two lanes and routed to the northbound access road at Blue Diamond. More Show Rumors:

Following yesterday's slew of entertainment speculation comes some additional information from Robin Leach, who now says we can possibly expect a shortened version of the controversial Book of Mormon, penned by the creators of South Park, to transition from Broadway to the Venetian, presumably in the former Jersey Boys theater. As we guessed yesterday, Venetian/Palazzo also seems to be the likely Vegas home of Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, while Rock of Ages is set to open in the Blue Man Group theater. (The movie version, starring Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Las Julianne Hough is set for release June 15.)

New Vegas iPhone App:

TravelVegas.com has launced a new Vegas app for the iPhone, showcasing discounts in addition to mobile tools designed to make exploring Vegas cheaper and easier. The app includes an interactive city guide, the ability to make reservations and bookings for restaurants, shows, and hotels, plus other useful information like a 4-day weather forecast. Spirit Ups Baggage Fees:

Spirit Airlines airline currently charges $45 for a carry-on bag, but as of Nov. 6, those customers who wait to pay the fee at the boarding gate will be asked to pay $100 for any item that's too big to fit under the seat, reports the R-J. The price for a carry-on paid for at an airport kiosk will also increase (the newspaper reports "from $50 from $40" -- we assume they transposed their numbers). Fees for larger items of checked luggage will also increase.

Wynn Macau Greenlit:

Wynn Macau Ltd has received formal approval from the government to begin construction on a new project on its 51-acre site on the so-called Cotai Strip, where rival Sheldon Adelson already has two properties. This will be Wynn's second resort-casino in the Chinese gambling mecca.

Hot Dog Eating Contest:

Just a reminder that Ellis Island's hot dog eating contest kicks off at 5 p.m. tonight. There's a $500 prize up for grabs for the greatest gobbler!

Times profiles open mic night at the Tap House, an old-school Vegas haunt that's also famed for its pizza. Junior Seau Reported Dead from Suicide:

Celebrity gossip site TMZ is reporting that former San Diego Chargers star Junior Seau died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the chest this morning at his home in Oceanside. The Chargers were unable to confirm or deny the report, but details online say that the coroner is on the scene and that the body was found by Seau's girlfriend. Our condolences go out to his family.

Vegas Makes Top 25 List:

Trip Advisor has just released its Travelers Choice awards for Best Destinations 2012, and Las Vegas came in at the #17 spot. Leading the list was London, not least because of its Summer Olympics hosting this year, followed by New York, Rome, Paris, and San Francisco.

Santana Opens at HoB:

Today marks the first night of Carlos Santana's new residency at House of Blues, with sporadic dates through 11/11/2012. Tickets for An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live – Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow start at $89, plus applicable fees, and HoB is marking his debut with the introduction of a specialty "Supernatural Margarita". Served during shows only, the cocktail features Casa Noble Tequila, organic Agave Nectar, fresh lime juice, and is served on ice, no salt, for $16. Note: We just noticed that Live Nation has a new feature on its seating charts. Metro Targets Bad Drivers:

With an horrific toll of 45 traffic-related deaths in the Las Vegas metropolitan jurisdiction this year to date (not to mention additional fatalities in neighboring North Las Vegas and Henderson), comes word that Metro is carrying out an intensive clampdown on bad drivers at particularly dangerous intersections this week. It's part of a series of ongoing initiatives to try to prevent accidents caused by speeding, cell-phone use, lack of signaling, and other bad habits. Let's hope it works.

Summer Fun at Ellis Island:

There's still time to register for the hot dog eating contest, with qualifying rounds starting at 5 p.m. tomorrow and a $500 cash prize up for grabs. Plus, not letting the casino's landlocked status get in the way, May 19 our friends at EI are hosting a beach party -- yep, there will be real sand, and food trucks, and a bikini contest (better go easy on those hot dogs), and Ellis Island BBQ and beer. The party kicks off at 5 p.m.

New Tributes from Legends:

Starting May 25, Legends in Concert, the celebrity tribute show that performs at Harrah's, will feature new cast performances, including tributes to Whitney Houston, Adele, and Justin Timberlake, along with old favorites like Bobby Darin, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley.

Never one to mince his words, the face of UFC responds to a Las Vegas' columnist's criticism of White's vocal support of Las Vegas race and sports books embracing betting on the UFC in an interview with MMAjunkie.com.

Wicked Whispers & Racy Rumors:

It's time to put our speculation hats back on, with a slew of entertainment rumors pouring forth from the pen of gossip columnist extraordinaire Robin Leach. His Luxe Life blog is hinting that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill may be about to sign contracts for a joint residency at a property "a guitar pick's throw" away from the Encore Theater, where Garth Brooks performs (TI? Venetian?). In addition, here's an even vaguer one from the Leach rumor mill: "Is a hotel resort’s ultralounge operated under the name of a colorful figure about to close so it can be taken over by a nightlife group who believes that the space complements its existing properties?", poses Robin. We've wracked our brains and all we can think of is Bond at the Cosmo. We'll keep you posted as and when we hear more.

Rebirth of the Sahara:

It's been announced today that owner sbe, together with real estate investment firm Stockbridge Capital Group, LLC, has secured $300 million in new funding for the transformation of the Sahara into SLS Las Vegas. J.P. Morgan was apparently able to raise the requisite funds in less than two weeks and the reinvented property, which will feature design by Philippe Starck and culinary oversight from Chef Jose Andres, who already operates two restaurants at the hip Cosmo in Vegas, and is set to open in 2014. The redevelopment is expected to create thousands of local jobs.

New ID for Harrah's Chester:

As of May 12, Harrah's Chester will be known as Harrah's Philadelphia, and will debut the new identity along with several new dining outlets and an all new entertainment lineup, including a summer concert series with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

IP Road Closures Ongoing:

As construction, and attendant demolitions, continue around the LINQ site center-Strip, thre will be additional road closures in the vicinity of Imperial Palace. Vehicular traffic will no longer be able to access IP from the Strip entrances: A detour route brings all consumer vehicle traffic through the east end of the property, closer to valet and self parking; traffic may also use the Harrah’s entrance from Las Vegas Boulevard. A temporary pedestrian entrance for customers will be open from the Strip on the north side gated area of the property until construction of the new pedestrian entrance at Harrah's Carnaval Court is complete. Foot traffic may also use the bridge between Harrah’s and IP located at the rear of the properties.

New Terminal Opens Soon:

The new $2.4 billion, 14-gate international Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport is scheduled to receive its first incoming flight June 27.
