Upheavals at the Plaza:
July 24, 2012 15:48
We've just learned of some ongoing changes at the Plaza, which seems to remain in something of a state of flux as it finds its new post-remodel identity. First up, Simpatico, the Italian restaurant-within-a-restaurant concept at Oscar's Beef, Booze, and Broads (which has already undergone a name change itself), apparently closed back in June. So unremarkable had it been that we didn't even notice its passing.
In other Plaza news, Anthony Cools' diminutive Swingers Club which, with its odd combo of miniature golf, dueling pianos, and Karaoke, had seemed misguided from the start, is also undergoing a complete remodel. No word yet as to what the new incarnation will comprise, but we'll keep you posted. (Both of these tidbits come courtesy of a useful new site we discovered called fremontstreetbars.com.)

Binion's Books Big Bet:
July 19, 2012 10:11
In an event reminiscent of the old days of Binion's Horseshoe, when proprietor Benny Binion would famously book any bet, so long as your first bet was your max bet, late Wednesday morning the downtown property, now known simply as Binion's, was the scene of a rare scene when the casino agreed to book a $66,200 bet on roulette. The anonymous gambler won, and told the casino he and his wife planned to use the winnings for a down payment on a house. Prior to approaching Binion's, the Hawaiian gambler said he'd called eight different casinos in Las Vegas, including several on the Strip, but that none would take a single roulette bet over $20,000.
The bigget known roulette bet in Las Vegas history took place in October, 2010, when the Golden Gate casino, also downtown, agreed to book a $125,000 initial bet from TV show "The Buried Life," which was trying to turn it into $1 million. For how that whole scenario went down, check out the Question of the Day for 4/23/2012.

Visitation Up:
July 12, 2012 11:34
Officials are predicting that this may be the year in which Las Vegas hits the 40-million visitors mark, with May numbers up 2.4 percent on the same month last year. As previous recent items in this column have indicated, however, spending levels are not keeping pace with the number of tourists, and May was a terrible month for gaming revenue on the Strip, in spite of increased numbers.

USA Today on Hotel Fees:
July 12, 2012 09:41
We don't think it's blowing the surprise to reveal that the presence or absence of mandatory resort fees was by far the most-voted-for option in the recent LVA Reader Poll about what's most important to you when booking a hotel room (full results will be posted on Saturday). If hidden and unexpected fees are one of your bugbears, check out an article in today's USA Today titled, "10 Most Annoying Hotel Fees," which includes tips on how to avoid them.

Bad Day to Visit DMV:
July 11, 2012 15:26
We just got a report that the A/C is partially out at the Henderson DMV, which has forced the facility to cut back on staff, so there are two reasons for not going there this afternoon, if you can possibly help it. If you must go, DMV officials are asking that patrons visit the office at 1399 American Pacific Drive only in the mornings until two new compressors are delivered from out of state. It's hoped that everything will be back to normal by Monday; in the meantime, visit the office on W. Flamingo if you can.
Wing Wednesday:
July 11, 2012 15:18
It's that time of the week at Hooters Casino, where mentioning today's code word "Beach Party" (yes, that's actually two words, but we won't split hairs) will earn your party 10 free wings, no strings. So, what are you waiting for?
Better News for A.C.:
July 11, 2012 14:55
It's all relative, but from the standpoint of the long-struggling East Coast casino enclave, it was good news that gambling revenue fell only by a fraction in June. Atlantic City's 12 hotel-casinos posted $274.7 million in gaming revenue last month, which was down just 0.6 percent from a year ago (although 2011 was hardly a stellar year for A.C.). Still, it's hoped that the new Revel property, combined with all the marketing innovations that the industry is collaborating on, will start to turn things around this summer. Time will tell.

The Future for O'Sheas:
July 11, 2012 14:17
There's an interesting thread on the LVA Free-for-All forum today about a survey Caesars Ent. is conducting (we're not sure if they're handing it out, or canvassing Total Rewards members by mail/email) about a proposed new casino area called "The Quad," which will take the space formerly occupied by O'Sheas. It sounds like they plan to take the old party vibe and run with it. Take a look at the survey questions and see what you think.

Foreigners Good for Vegas:
July 11, 2012 11:34

The numbers, released Tuesday, reveal that roughly one in six visitors in 2011 was foreign, but they spent $1 out of every $4, and $1 of every $3 spent on nongaming purchases. With the new terminal at McCarran and growth in international routes, analysts are hoping for even stronger results from foreign tourism in 2012.

A fatal two-car collision on the 215 Beltway has closed all lanes of Sunset Road. Watch this space for updates.
New Name for McCarran?:
July 10, 2012 12:05
Citing the possible irrelevance to many passengers, especially foreign visitors, of Sen. Pat McCarran, for whom Las Vegas' main airport is named, the LVCVA is poised to hear arguments for and against the renaming McCarran International Airport as Las Vegas International Airport at an Aug. 14 meeting.
Price Hikes at Bellagio Buffet (Not):
July 10, 2012 11:35

Full Circle for DiBartolomeo:
July 10, 2012 11:15
He's been called the poster child for compulsive gambling. Few in the industry rose as high as Gary DiBartolomeo, nor fell as far. By 2000, the casino-industry lifer had worked his way up from crap dealer to president of Caesars Atlantic City. A year later, the State of New Jersey revoked his gaming license. DiBartolomeo's success had masked a pathological gambling disorder and Jersey regulators found that he "had lied to licensing authorities, his employer, and his therapist." After four years in exile, during which he established two chapters of Gamblers Anonymous, 'DiBart' was readmitted to the industry as a casino host at Bally's Wild Wild West, also in Atlantic City. This week, it was quietly announced via LinkedIn that DiBartolomeo had been named chief operating officer of Pennsylvania's newest casino, Valley Forge Resort. LVA congratulates 'DiBart' on making one of the fullest and most heart-warming comebacks in industry annals.

Historic Restaurant to Close:
July 10, 2012 10:09

Reschedule outdoor activities to the cooler early morning or early evening hours whenever possible and stay hydrated.

Big Boutiques:
July 08, 2012 14:12
An article in today's LV Review-Journal on "boutique hotels" focuses on the 181-room Nobu Hotel at Caesars Palace that's set to open at the end of this year. It also names other boutiques, including the El Cortez Cabana Suites and the Siegel Group's Artisan and Rumor. OK. But it goes on to site the pending SLS Las Vegas, formerly the Sahara, which is slated to have more than 1,500 rooms, and the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, which has 2,966. Those are sounding a little bigger than boutiques to us.
