More Floods:

More monsoon storms are expected for Labor Day weekend, with a new flash flood watch for Southern Nevada in effect from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Take care, especially on the roads.

Passenger Count Down, Slightly:

The latest figures released show the July passenger count at McCarran International Airport down 0.6 percent from a year ago, at 3.7 million passenger arrivals and departures. For the seven months to date this year for which figures are available, the count is up 1.5 percent on 2011, at 24.4 million passengers.

Bridge Reopens:

Warm Springs Bridge, which was replaced as part of the $246.5 million I-15 South Design-Build Project, will be fully open to traffic again by 5 p.m. this evening.

Big Show Closures:

Tonight is the last chance to catch Cirque's Viva Elvis at Aria, while Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular ends its long run at Venetian on Sunday. That night's sold out, but you can still score tix for Saturday's penultimate performance.

More Isaac Updates:

In addition to our previous postings about the reopening of the Harrah's New Orleans and Boomtown casinos, it's also been confirmed that agents from the Mississippi Gaming Commission have now reopened Island View Casino in Gulfport, plus the Beau Rivage, Hard Rock, Isle, Treasure Bay, and IP casinos in Biloxi. The other six casinos are expected to reopen today and Saturday, in time for Labor Day weekend.

Downtown Farmers Market:

Don't forget, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, it's the Downtown Third farmers market, with lots of fresh regional produce, artisanal wares, and free activities for kids. Check it out, if you haven't already. The indoor market is located off US-95 at Casino Center, with munchies provided today by Sauced food truck, including the veggie breakfast burrito, served with their signature Corona Cheese Sauce.

Boomtown Back in Biz:

New Orleans' Boomtown Casino reopened at 9 a.m. this morning local time, following its closure early Tuesday morning due to Hurricane Isaac.

Topless Vampire Show to Close:

If you haven't yet taken advantage of the 2-for-1 offer in the 2012 LVA Member Rewards Book, then get over to the Stratosphere asap to catch Bite before it closes after Halloween -- going the same way as the Vampire Vixens (you'd've thought topless vampires would be a natch for Sin City, but evidently not so much, although Bite enjoyed a long run at the Strat).

Pinkberry Reminder:

The new frozen yogurt venue opens tonight in Crystals at CityCenter and will be doling out small free samples from 5 to 8 p.m.

Bad Weather Forces Road Closures:

The earlier flood advisory has been lifted, but at least two roads in Clark County remain closed, namely Bonnie Springs Road off State Route 159, and Arroyo Street in Blue Diamond, off State Route 159 is also closed. An advisory is also in effect until 4:45 p.m. today for minor flooding near Magic Way, Equestrian Drive, and Foothills Drives in southeast Henderson.

Holly Madison Pregnant:

If you hadn't already heard, ex-"Girl Next Door" and current "Holly's World" personality Holly Madison is three-months pregnant. The star of Peepshow had previously announced that she'd be bowing out of the role of Bo Peep in December, but will now certainly depart prior to that (unless they do a major re-write of the storyline...)

AGTL Coming to Palazzo:

Following a prior extended run at Planet Hollywood in 2009, and three gigs at Caesars in 2010, America's Got Talent Live! will commence an 8-week residency at Palazzo, commencing Sept. 26. The show will peform Saturday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m., with tickets starting at $45.

Crown Club Closed:

We just learned via Mike Weatherford's column in the R-J that as of last weekend, Crown Nightclub at the Rio is no more. The venue will focus on its other incarnation, as a theater.

Beso Update:

We just heard an update from the PR company, who informed us that during the construction phase and interim period between Beso’s closing and the opening of SHe by Morton’s, employees of the restaurant will have the option of working at designated positions at other Landry’s properties throughout the Las Vegas market. Upon the opening of SHe by Morton’s, former Beso employees will have priority application status and are encouraged to reapply within the company.

Las Vegas This Weekend:

New Wildfire Casino to Debut:

The former Gold Rush casino, located at 1195 W. Sunset, reopens in its new incarnation as Wildfire Sunset at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1. The Station-owned property has received a complete makeover to rebrand as a Wildfire.

Neon Museum Opening Confirmed:

The much-anticipated downtown historical attraction, dedicated to preserving the city's neon past, finally has an opening date, after more than 15 years of planning. It's been announced today that the Neon Museum will open its doors to the public on Saturday, Oct. 27 in its two-acre outdoor museum space, featuring a visitor center housed in the iconic former La Concha Motel lobby, which was transported downtown from the Strip.

Joe Rogan Canceled:

Due to the cancelation of UFC 151, "Joe Rogan Live" at Mandalay Bay on Friday Aug. 31st has also been canceled, the host/comedian has posted on his Twitter.

Scott Brothers Out:

The Scott Brothers, long-time staples of Las Vegas variety shows, with their robotic dance routines, were voted out at the semi-final stage of "America's Got Talent" last night. Congrats to the duo for beating out so many competitors to make it this far.

New Orleans Casino to Reopen:

Harrah’s New Orleans has announced it will reopen for business at 10 a.m., Friday, August 31, following its closure due to Hurricane Isaac. We'll keep you posted as we hear of other casino reopenings.

Beso Out, SHe In:

Beso, the former Eva Longoria-owned steakhouse in Crystals at CityCenter, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2011 and was bought out for $1 million by Tilman Fertita, owner of Landry's, is undergoing a transformation. The original restaurant closed Monday and will reopen as SHe by Morton's, a high-end "boutique" restaurant aimed particularly at women. The project will be a joint venture between Longoria and Fertita, although whether the actress will have a financial stake in the business, or merely be the "face" of SHe, as she was in the latter days of Beso, has not been made clear. SHe is scheduled to open on New Year's Eve.

New Management for LVH:

The long-troubled off-Strip property, formerly the Las Vegas Hilton, is to gain new management, reports the R-J, with Las Vegas-based Navegante Group taking over operations from the court-appointed reciever who's been running the property since January. Apparently, the resorts's 1,800 workers, who received Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act notifications today, will apparently be rehired under the new management. A foreclosure sale is set for sometime in November and a joint venture between Gramercy Capital and Goldman Sachs Mortgage Co. LLC, the current lender, will bid for the property, it's being reported. Colony Resorts LVH Acquisitions LLC will remain LVH's owner until the sale is completed.

Bar Rescue Coming to Vegas:

Jon Taffer’s Rescue Tour, featuring the host of the popular Spike TV series "Bar Rescue," plus experts, including Chef Brian Duffy and mixologists Elayne Duke and Peter O'Connor, is coming to Las Vegas this Nov. 8. The event, hosted by Treasure Island, will feature workshops identifying problems and offering solutions, plus a complimentary one-hour networking reception with operators, speakers and sponsors. Morgan Stanley Buys F'bleau Debt:

It's being reported by Bloomberg that Morgan Stanley has purchased $320 million of the bankrupt, unfinished Fontainebleau's debt, as a Nevada court decides which creditors will be paid off first by the estate of the casino company, for which billionaire investor Carl Icahn paid just $150 million in 2010. Fontainebleau Las Vegas LLC and affiliates Fontainebleau Las Vegas Holdings LLC and Fontainebleau Las Vegas Capital Corp. filed for bankruptcy in Miami in 2009, listing debt of more than $1 billion each.

Eating Author on the Radio:

Las Vegas restaurant critic and Eating Las Vegas co-author Al Mancini is one of the guests on KNPR's State of Nevada show (88.9 FM) at 10:30 a.m. this morning, discussing predictions that global water shortages will force us all into vegetarianism. Lawsuit Updates:

Any decision on the fate of Wayne Newton's plans to turn his former home into an attraction will be delayed until January 2013 at the earliest, following a decision by Clark County District Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez delay action on a motion to dissolve the partnership between Newton and the developers, on the grounds that more time is necessary to collect evidence in the case, including what has happened to some $60 million that two Texas investors claim they have already sunk into the project. "Graceland West" was originally due to open earlier this year. Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, another Las Vegas legal dispute continues to escalate, with former senior investor in Wynn Resorts, Kazuo Okada, filing a $140 million lawsuit in Tokyo District Court, claiming he has been the victim of defamation by Steve Wynn, who forcibly redeemed Okada's stake in the company and stripped him of his title as vice chairman following the Japanese tycoon's allegations of financial chicanery by his former friend. The two opposing sides continue to be engaged in litigation in Clark County, with Okada due in Las Vegas on Sept. 18 to sit for a deposition by Wynn attorneys. We'll keep you posted of progress, or the lack thereof, in both cases.

Vegas Acts on AGT:

Catch tonight's episode of "America's Got Talent", with semi-finalists The Scott Brothers, who've been performing their original dance act in Las Vegas for years (see QoD 8/26/2012). Plus, keep the votes rolling in for JABBAWOCKEEZ, the urban dance troupe who's show is currently performing at the Monte Carlo, who are among the former AGT stars you can vote for to perform on the season finale Sept. 6, as is comedy magician Nathan Burton, who's headlining at the Flamingo (get free tix to his show at couponsinvegas.com.

Gulf Casinos Ordered to Close:

The Mississippi Gaming Commission has ordered all 12 Gulf Coast casinos to close, due to the threat of what has now been upgraded from Tropical Storm to Hurricane Isaac. Orders to reopen will be issued when the commission considers conditions safe for employees and patrons to return.

Vegas to Host Biggest Bachelorette Party:

The weekend of Sept. 21-23 will be a huge one, even by Las Vegas standards, with both the sold-out I Heart Radio concert taking place, and "The World's Largest Bachelorette Party." Hosted by TAO and LAVO, the mass bridal party will take place at the two clubs, and at TAO Beach pool, and will involve $20,000+ in prizes, including a honeymoon in Mexico, spa services, private performances by the Chippendales dancers, and pole-dancing classes. Vegas Drivers Suck:

It's hardly breaking news if you've ever driven in this town, but the latest national report by insurance company Allstate ranks Las Vegas as 136 out of 200 cities when it comes to our accident rate. Reno, which regularly beats us for drunkenness, fared much better, coming in at the #8 spot. North Las Vegas and Henderson ranked 126th and 70th, respectively.

Talk Show for Strip Headliner:

Gossip columnist Robin Leach reports in his latest "Strip Scribbles" column for the LV Sun that production is underway on Marie Osmond’s new fall daytime TV talk show for Hallmark. The cable channel is undergoing a major makeover and officially launches its new look Oct. 1, with Marie anchoring the daytime schedule (previews start Sept. 17). Osmond returns to headline at the Flamingo tonight with brother Donny.

Chicago Casino Vetoed:

Gov. Pat Quinn has vetoed a plan that would have allowed five new Illinois casinos, including one in Chicago, claiming the bill did not provide enough oversight of casino operators and other gaming interests and had ethical shortcomings that could allow "loopholes for mobsters." Supporters of the bill have vowed to try to override his veto.

Free Fro Yo:

The first Las Vegas outpost of celebrity-fave frozen yogurt store Pinkberry debuts this Thursday in Crystals at CityCenter and to celebrate the brand's arrival in Sin City, they'll be dishing out free samples, with toppings, from 5-8 p.m. (limit one per person.)

New Operator for Two Casinos:

Fifth Street Gaming, the Las Vegas hospitality and gaming company that will run the former Lady Luck when it reopens as the Downtown Grand, has announced that it's also taking over gambling operations at the Gold Spike and Siegel Slots and Suites properties, currently operated by Golden Route. The new contracts are subject to approval by state gaming regulators.

MBay Nightclub Confirmed:

The long-rumored story that Cirque founder Guy Laliberte is to open a nightclub in Mandalay Bay has been confirmed, alhtough it's now being said that the new venue will not take on a Michael Jackson theme, as had been thought, to coincide with the opening of Cirque's Michael Jackson: The Immortal show next spring. It's also unclear as to whether the as-yet-unnamed venue will take the spot that previously housed Rumjungle, or not. The new venture, whatever it's called and wherever it may be, will be a partnership with Vegas nightlife impesarios the Light Group.

Fallout from Isaac:

As Tropical Storm Isaac continues to gather strength, here's the current fallout casino-wise: The test-run opening of Pinnacle Entertainment's new casino in Baton Rouge, L'Auberge, has been postponed until Aug. 29. Harrah's New Orleans is to close at midnight tonight. Boomtown New Orleans (also Pinnacle-owned) closed at 3 a.m. this morning. Restaurant Week:

Las Vegas Restaurant Week kicks off today, giving both locals and tourists the opportunity to dine at many of the city's best restaurants at affordable prix-fixe prices (ranging from $20.12 to $50.12), all in support of Three Square Food Bank. Many of the participating restaurants are among the "Essential 50" in the Eating Las Vegas restaurant guide, so take this chance to sample some of the city's best culinary offerings while helping a great cause. Restaurant Week runs through September 2.

Olympics Betting:

Nevada may want to re-evaluate its position on taking bets on the Olympics, as the games produced a strong handle for foreign and offshore sports books that accepted wagers. The London-based bookmaker Sporting Index Group reported that betting was up 900% from the previous Olympics and that 70% of its active customers made at least one bet on an Olympic event.

Big Debt for the Big Boys:

Recent corporate reports have updated the numbers on the huge debt loads being carried by Las Vegas' two biggest operators. MGM Resorts International, which has the biggest presence in Las Vegas with 12 casinos and 40,739 rooms, reports debt of $13.4 billion. Caesars Entertainment, with eight casinos and 23,140 rooms in Las Vegas, along with many more casinos throughout the U.S., is carrying debt of $19.9 billion.

John 3:16 Cook Dies:

Las Vegas' famous street preacher, John 3:16 Cook has died. Cook, along with his wife, Magickal Marissa, were frequent subjects of local news stories and columns for many years, as they advocated for the homeless.

Final Week for Elvis and Phantom:

This week marks your last opportunity to see Viva Elvis at Aria and Phantom -- The Vegas Spectacular at the Venetian. The final performances are Aug. 31 for Elvis and Sept. 2 for Phantom.

Another Allegiant Add-On:

Allegiant Air has come up with another way to squeeze a few more bucks out of flyers. Using a credit card as opposed to a debit card when you book now results in an added $4 charge.

Cashing in on Harry:

Last week's romp by Prince Henry of Wales (he was photographed playing strip billiards in a Wynn Las Vegas suite) is being turned into a PR bonanza by the Las Vegas public-relations machine. Ads have already been launched scolding the unknown source of the photos for breaking the "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" code. The restaurant i(heart)burgers at Palazzo has introduced "The Exposed Prince" burger, served open-faced, of course.

Batmobile in Town:

The famous superhero vehicle is making a rare appearance at the COX Pavilion Tunnel tomorrow at 11:30 a.m., in conjunction with Batman Live at the Thomas & Mack Center, which runs from October 3-7. Designed by legendary race-car designer Professor Gordon Murray, this version of the Batmobile is one of the most hi-tech and complex cars ever built.

Coast Promos Today:

It's the final bonus-point Sunday at Coast Casinos, with 11X points on slots and 7X on video poker awarded today at Gold Coast, Suncoast, Sam's Town, and Orleans. The Orleans also runs its Sunday blackjack mini-tournament starting at 2 p.m. The entry fee is $25 and there's a $1,000 first prize.

Frontier Cancels Vegas Route:

Frontier Airlines today announced it will not launch the nonstop service it had planned to operate between Durango, Colo. and Las Vegas. The new service was to have commenced on Oct. 4, but according to a spokesman for the airline, "Unfortunately, the community interest in this new service was far less than we anticipated." Ticket holders will be contacted by the airline for a full refund.

Skyvue Wheel:

What's coming to be known as Las Vegas' "second big wheel" announced that it's secured additional financial back-up that will keep it on schedule for a late-2013 debut. Construction has continued uninterrupted on the 500-foot wheel at Skyvue that will likely debut after Caesars Entertainment's 550-foot wheel being built as part of Linq.

Water at Red Rock:

In the neverending search for innovative buffet ideas, here's a new one. The Red Rock buffet now includes a large glass bottle of Vero water at your table. The water comes in addition to whatever additional beverages you want.

A Lion in Reno:

We've heard of cougars in the casinos, but a mountain lion? A two-year-old male mountain lion wandered into downtown Reno yesterday and tried to walk into Harrah's. The 100-pound cat was foiled when he couldn't negotiate the revolving door. He was tranquilized and returned to the wild.

Summer Camp Over:

Summer Camp: The Musical ends its run at Onyx Theater this weekend, with final performances at 8 p.m. tonight and Sunday. Tickets are $15.

Facelift for Lake Mead:

A $2.6 million upgrade is underway for the Boulder Beach Campground at Lake Mead's National Recreation Area gets underway this week. The project will include the construction of new concrete RV pads, restroom buildings, the addition of new native plants, and other campsite-related facilities.

Reid Weighs in on Airport Name Change:

Citing the former senator's reputation as a narrow-minded racist, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid weighed in this morning on the side of those calling for a name-change for the facility, during a ceremony at McCarran International Airport's new Terminal 3. "Pat McCarran was one of the most anti-Semitic ... one of the most anti-black, one of the most prejudiced people ever to serve in the Senate," Reid said. "It's not a decision I am going to make, but you asked me to give you my opinion. I don't think his name should be on anything." Historic Bar Closed:

We couldn't bring ourselves to post about this previously, but we can confirm that Coachman's Inn, the venerable bar and restaurant on the east side of town known for its fresh lobster, oysters, and year-round Christmas tree, has gone the way of The Tillerman and closed its doors for the last time on Tuesday, after some 40 years in business. R.I.P.

Primm Valley gets a Comedy Club:

Bonkerz Comedy is set to open up at Primm Valley Casino Sept. 14. Shows will be held on Friday and Saturday evenings but times and prices have not been announced yet. Bonkerz is one of the United States' longest-running comedy clubs.

Another Palms Restaurant Closing:

Little by little the ONE Group is taking over. Gossip columnist Robin leach is reporting today that Little Buddha, which has been operating at the Palms for 11 years, will close within the next two months to make way for Xishi. Renovations and redecorating are slated for November with a reopening planned for the end of December.

Four Indicted for Palms Betting Fraud:

Three former employees of the Palms' race and sports book, including the manager from 2005-'07, plus a well-known sports bettor, have been been indicted by a federal grand jury in a betting scheme that allegedly defrauded the resort out of more than $800,000 between July 2006 and July 2007. The scheme involved the acceptance of quinella wagers on races that involved less than six horses, in violation of Palms policy.

Vote for Strip Performer:

NBC's "America’s Got Talent" is asking viewers to vote on the three best acts to-date who didn’t win the show, but should have, and headlining comedy magician Nathan Burton is one of the three to vote for, reports Robin Leach. The whe winner gets to perform live on this season’s finale.

Deal Saves Race Betting:

An agreement reached Thurday between Las Vegas Dissemination Co., the sole facilitator of pari-mutuel wagering in Nevada, and the state's 83 race books, has averted a potential shut-down of legal betting on horse races. The new seven-year deal secures the safety of the $59.5 million horse race-betting sector, which is still considered an important, if declining, revenue stream for Nevada's race and sports books.

Concert Canceled:

Reggae singer Freddie McGregor's scheduled concert on Saturday, September 1 at Silverton's Sway Pool Lounge has been canceled. Refunds are available at original point of purchase.

South Point License Approved:

South Point's application for an interactive gaming license won approval Thursday from the Nevada Gaming Commission, making it the first U.S. casino to be authorized to run an intrastate, real-money poker website.

UFC Scraps 151:

It's just been reported that for the first time in 11 years, the Ultimate Fighting Championship is canceling an event. UFC 151, which was to have seen Dan Henderson fight champion Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title in Las Vegas Sept. 1, will not go ahead in light of Henderson's knee ligament injury and Jones' refusal to fight Chael Sonnen instead on just eight days' notice. Casinos Go Smoke-Free:

Perhaps it's the smoke-free policy that's partly to blame for the new Revel Resort's lacklustre performance (see "Today's News" 8/22/2012), but the Atlantic City casino is just one of a growing number to exclude smoking, including those in Maryland, Ohio, New York, and Delaware. Massachusetts will not allow gamblers to smoke when its new casinos open in the next few years, either.

Record Bad Beat in A.C.:

Caesars Entertainment paid out nearly $800,000 Monday in what was the largest bad beat jackpot since the concept was first introduced to Atlantic City in 2010. The payout took place when one player's four nines was beaten by a king-high straight flush and while at some casinos the bad-beat jackpot, funded by $1 taken out of each pot, only goes to the losing and winning players, in this instance Caesars divided the jackpot among every gambler playing in one of the poker rooms in its Caesars, Harrah’s, Bally’s and Showboat properties, with 411 people each receiving a $958 payout.

New Vegas Reality Show:

Las Vegas is about to be home to yet another TV reality show, with production underway on a new TLC series tentatively titled "Vegas High Rollers," reports today's LV Sun. The show profiles five powerful local women, including: local fashion designer and entrepreneur Lana Fuchs; professional poker player Jennifer Harman; Amy Hanley, daughter of reputed mobster Tom Hanley; Alicia Jacobs, former television reporter for KSNV Channel 3; and Lori Montoya, owner of Rain Cosmetics. Kimberly Friedmutter, whose husband Brad is the architect who designed the Cosmopolitan, Red Rock Resort and Aliante Station casinos, is also expected to make appearances on the program. So far eight shows have been commissioned for the series.

Reno Casino Gets Facelift:

The Grand Sierra Resort east of downtown Reno will unveil its $25 million upgrade this weekend, with improvements including white marble flooring, new and upgraded restaurants, and brighter lights and wall coverings. The top three floors of the 27-story property have been converted into suites, and the 25th floor is now adults-only. A spokesman for the hotel said that they want to appeal more to the locals market and had canvassed their customers for input prior to the renovations.

Free Comedy Tix for Locals:

The Mike Hammer Comedy Magic Show is offering free tickets to locals for tonight's show at the Four Queens Hotel as part of the kick-off celebrations for the American Heart Association "Rediscover Downtown Heart Walk." The hotel is also donating $1,966 to the organization to commemorate the Four Queens' opening in 1966. Locals can call 877/935-2844 to reserve their seats in advance; otherwise tickets will be open on a first-come, first-served basis. Smith Center Ticket Lottery:

A day-of-performance lottery for a limited number of orchestra seats will be held for WICKED, the Wizard of Oz-based Broadway show that will perform at The Smith Center from August 29 – October 7. Two and one-half hours prior to each performance, people who present themselves at the box office will have their names placed in a lottery drum; thirty minutes later, names will be drawn for a limited number of orchestra seats at $25 each, cash only (reg. orchestra seats start at $93). This lottery is available only in-person at the box office, with a limit of two tickets per person. Lottery participants must have a valid photo ID.

United, Hawaiian Move to T3:

Starting Wednesday United and Hawaiian Airlines will now use the new Terminal 3 at McCarran airport for ticketing and baggage claim, although their flights will still operate out of T1's D Gates, which are now linked to T3 via an underground tram.

President En Route:

President Obama is currently in Reno and is expected to arrive at Nellis Air Force Base around 7:45 p.m. tonight. On Wednesday he will hold a rally at at Canyon Springs High School in North Las Vegas, so expect possible traffic congestion in the 89032 zip code area.

NY Judge Rules Poker Game of Skill:

In a decision described by one attorney advocating for online poker players as "the most thorough and detailed poker ruling he had seen by a U.S. court," a federal judge in New York ruled Tuesday that poker is more a game of skill than chance and, as such, cannot be prosecuted under a law originally created to stop organized crime families from profiting from gambling, reports the Associated Press. In reaching his decision, Judge Jack Weinstein relied extensively on the findings of a defense expert who analyzed online poker games. On the strength of the ruling, a jury's July conviction of a man charged with conspiring to operate an illegal underground poker club was tossed. "Because the poker played on the defendant's premises is not predominately a game of chance, it is not gambling" as defined in the federal law, the judge wrote in a lengthy decision that traced the history of poker and federal laws to combat illegal gambling.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for an area north of the Las Vegas Valley, with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall expected in north central Clark County, about 20 miles northwest of Moapa.

Revel in Trouble:

Much as the highly anticipated Cosmopolitan resort-casino in Las Vegas has failed to match its popularity with commercial success, the new $2.4 billion Revel in Atlantic City is asking its lenders for up to $100 million, less than five months after opening, to avoid defaulting on its loans and to cover operating costs through the end of 2013.

Vegas Tops for Hospitality Pay:

Las Vegas is the top-paying city for workers in the hospitality industry, according to numbers analyzed by the U.S. Census Bureau. Even though Las Vegas unemployment rates continue to run high, those workers who are employed in the accommodation and food services sector are paid an average of $28,700 per year, more than $6,000 ahead of any other major market. New York, Hawaii, and San Francisco-Oakland were the next-best paying markets out of the 115 metropolitan areas studied.

Crazy Horse Moving On:

After 11 years on the Strip, MGM Grand's Crazy Horse Paris (formerly La Femme) is to close Oct. 1, after plans for a new collaborative effort with South America’s Pink Elephant nightclub fell through. Apparently, however, the show will be moving to a new as-yet-unspecified Strip venue, and there are plans for a U.S. tour.

Bagatelle Beach Delayed Again:

First it was announced for Memorial Day. Then delayed until August. Now Bagatelle Beach at the Tropicana is slated for a possible mid-October debut. The complex will include two pools, a 1,500-square-foot stage, a sand volleyball court, and the Bagatelle Bistro Supper Club. Difficuties associated with securing the permits to build the restaurant are being blamed for the latest delay.

Coast Sunday Promos:

Continued Trouble for Monorail:

Ridership of the monorail in the second quarter of this year dropped 19% year-over-year, with 1.06 million customers. While a big part of recent declines has been blamed on the closure of the Sahara, which sits at the end of the travel line, June numbers were down over 17% and the Sahara was already closed in June 2011.

Big Win in Michigan:

An unidentified Michigan resident has bagged $337 million jackpot in the Powerball lottery. It's the seventh biggest U.S. lottery jackpot ever.

The band Survivor plays a free concert tonight, outdoors at the Fremont Street Experience. The show kicks off at 9 p.m. on the 1st Street stage.

Southwest Ups Fares:

Southwest Airlines Co., the principal carrier at McCarran airport, raised fares on short routes by $10 per round trip on Friday and other airlines are expected to follow suit. The price hike applies to flights of less than 500 miles each way -- about one-third of Southwest's routes. The company said the increase is to cover a rise in operating costs.

HP Author on the Radio:

Reporter, crime writer, and author Cathy Scott will be interviewed on Boston NBC affiliate itsacrimeradio.com this evening, talking about the as-yet unsolved murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, among other topics. The show airs live coast to coast at noon PST.

Sensi Penalized by Health District:

We just learned via the "Eater Vegas" blog that the Southern Nevada Health District shut down an Asian food station at Sensi on Aug. 15 after the restaurant received a total of 27 demerits for issues including a lack of adequate employee toilets and hand washing facilities, using water from an unapproved source, improper hand-washing by employees, and foods not stored at the proper temperatures. The recent routine inspection follows one last December for which the venue received just one demerit, so we're not sure what happened, but the discovery of an imminent health hazard called for the immediate closure of the restaurant. A call to Bellagio confirmed that the restaurant itself remains open, but will be closed from August 19-26. Note: This is a revised version of a previous entry that stated Sensi was closed immediately following the inspection. This turned out to be misinformation: one station was closed, but the restaurant remains open until Aug. 19.

Today's Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting that well-known Las Vegas political commentator Jon Ralston has parted ways with The Sun, in solidarity with his co-presenter on "Face to Face," Dana Gentry, who fell out with the publication over her coverage of ongoing litigation involving Aspen Financial Services and boss Jeff Guinn. Gentry resigned earlier this week. Ralston is the author of Huntington Press' The Anointed One, which argues that the election of late Gov. Kenny Guinn was a mere formality, due the power of the political interests in the background.

Lightning Sparks Red Rock Fire:

The R-J's reporting that a 15-acre wildfire was ignited after a lightning strike this afternoon in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. About 80 personnel are currently working to extinguish what's been dubbed the "Pass Fire," which began at about 3 p.m. and is located one mile south of state Route 160, mile marker 15.

National Roller Coaster Day:

We're still bemused as to why "National Tequila Day" and "National Chips & Salsa Day" are not one and the same. Now we learn that "National Rum Day" coincides with "National Roller Coaster Day" and we're undecided as to whether that's a good thing or not... When it comes to riding the big boy out at Buffalo Bill's, a shot of Dutch courage might not be such a bad idea, and today they're offering free rides on the infamous Desperado until 6.45 p.m. Apologies for the belated announcement, but we only just found out.

You may have caught a recent Question of the Day penned by Eating Las Vegas author Al Mancini, that suggested some gourmet restaurants that serve up bargain lunch menus (see 8/4/2012). One omission from that list was the Quick Lunch at David Myers' Comme Ça at the Cosmopolitan, which not only serves a three-course lunch menu, with choices, but just this week has dropped the price from $22 to $17.50. We're not sure how much desserts go for here, but the three cheeses appetizer and steamed mussels entrée would normally set you back $33, so you're basically eating for half price, plus free dessert! Table Games in Maryland:

A bill legalizing table games in Maryland casinos has passed though the state legislature and will go to a vote in November. The bill also authorizes a sixth casino to be built in Prince George's County.

Stronger Station:

Station Casinos reported improved results resulting in a profit for the second consecutive quarter, driven by increases in both casino win and revenue from non-gaming areas, including food and beverage and room sales. Targeted marketing campaigns and a slight decrease in Las Vegas unemployment levels are credited.

No End in Sight for Absinthe:

Gossip columnist Robin leach is reporting in his blog today that Absinthe, which originally had a contract with Caesars Entertainment until October of this year, will now have an open-ended contract. Spiegelworld, BASE Entertainment and Caesars Entertainment representatives are anticipating proper permit approval from Clark County officials to allow the show to remain in place for a long as it wants. He also hints that one of the more prominent members (*cough* Angel Porrino *cough*) won't be in the show by year's end.

Fezzik Tonight:

Sports betting expert Fezzik will be the lone guest tonight on Pregame.com's First Preview radio show. Fezzik will talk football betting with host R.J. Bell from 11 p.m. to midnight on ESPN 1100 AM and 98.9 FM. Should be a good show.

Rumored Restaurant Massacre:

Today's R-J has just reported a rumor that China Grill Management is set to close all three of its Mandalay Bay restaurants this November 18, including China Grill, Red Square, and Red White & Blue, laying off 350 people. More details as and when this story is confirmed.

Meet Cirque Sculptor:

On Thursday, Aug. 23, renowned sculpture artist Richard MacDonald, the only artist given behind-the-scenes access to Cirque du Soleil, will host a special session of Crystals' "Meet the Artist" series, featuring veteran Cirque performers. MacDonald will be discussing his creative process and how he interacts with his models at the event, which takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public to attend.

More Remodeling at Bellagio:

Following last year's $70 million renovation of 2,500 of its rooms, Bellagio has announced a new remodeling project that will see 928 rooms and suites in the Spa Tower set to receive a $40-million upgrade. Some of the rooms will apparently be ready by next month, while the whole upgrade is due to be completed by the end of the year.

Jerry's Nugget Files for Chpt. II:

One of Las Vegas' last remaining family-owned casinos has filed for Chatper 11 bankruptcy protection after talks to restructure its debt fell through this week. A county court hearing was set for today on receivership, but the bankruptcy filing halts this action against Jerry's Nugget, which lists both its assets and its liabilities at greater than $10 million.

Remodel for Four Seasons:

The Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas is to undertake a complete renovation of all 424 of its rooms and suites in Art Deco style, plus remodels of all the bathrooms to incorporate marble flooring and vanity tops. The project is expected to be completed by Dec. 17.

July Numbers Down for A.C.:

The new Revel resort has not been enough to change Atlantic City's fortunes, where July saw the continuation of its lengthy downward spiral and a casino win down 9.5 percent, at $308.2 million, from the same month the previous year. The commencement of the current losing streak coincides with the debut of the first casino in Pennsylvania, which opened in November 2006.

New Vegas Cheat Show:

It doesn't sound like anything "new," in reality, but this August Destination America slots will air a new series "exploring the elaborate new measures casino security employs to beat [cheaters] at their own game. "Cheating Vegas" premieres Sunday, August 19 at 10 p.m. E/P, and will apparently feature surveillance footage and jailhouse interviews with former cheaters, as well as first-person accounts from accomplices and casino personnel.

Guns N’ Roses Residency:

Following its experiment with a residency by Mötley Crüe, the Joint at the Hard Rock will now welcome iconic rock band Guns N’ Roses for their first-ever residency, with a total of 12 dates commencing October 31 and running through November 24. Tickets for "Appetite for Democracy" start at $45 and go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m.

FORBES Profiles Top Earning DJs:

The explosion in the Electronic Dance Music scene has prompted FORBES magazine to publish a list of the top highest-earning DJs for the first time ever, and Dutch born Tiësto, who's currently enjoying his second residency at a Las Vegas property, tops the list, with earnings of $22 million and a nightly gross of $250,000. Collectively, the ten highest-paid DJs pulled in $125 million—more than the payroll of the LA Lakers—and all the names on the list are regulars on the Las Vegas club and daylife scene, including Skrillex (who ranks second with $15 million, Swedish House Mafia (recently disbanded), David Guetta, Kaskade, Deadmau5, Afrojack, Avicii, and DJ Pauly D of "Jersey Shore."

Sunset Sessions at Cosmo:

The Cosmopolitan will host Sunset Sessions, an event that brings together music industry professionals and fresh new talent this Nov. 8 – 10. Hash House A Go Go made a list of the "Top 10 Cheap Eats in the United States," as chosen by Gayot.com. HHAGG was the only Las Vegas restaurant to make the list. We're not privy to the criteria for for making the Gayot list, but given the choices in Las Vegas, HHAGG is an interesting selection.

Wooloughan Burger:

Cantor Gaming has launched a Wi-Fi enabled, Nevada-based sports wagering platform for desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smart phones, allowing customers to wager on sports from anywhere within the state of Nevada, without requiring 3G or 4G location capability. In other news, handheld gaming devices, which were introduced into the Las Vegas market in 2006, have are finally coming to the casinos of Atlantic City, following Gov. Christie's signing of legislation this week that clears the way for gambler to play electronic versions of their favorite slot and table games on mobile, wireless devices anywhere on property.

Styx Live at Palms:

Historic rock group Styx will perform their two most famous albums, The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight, back-to-back in their entirety in the Pearl at the Palms November 16 and 17. Tickets start at $54.

Visititation Up:

Once again, Las Vegas visitation was up in June, although casino revenue was down. According to the latest figures from the LVCVA, 3,392,798 people visited the city that month, up 2.1 percent from the previous June.

Allegiant Adds New Route:

The Las Vegas-based budget airline will launch a new non-stop route to Boise, Idaho, commencing Oct. 12, with two flights per week to Las Vegas.

Casino Revenue Down:

Following a succession of poor quarterly earnings reports from the big casinos, it's no great surprise that the latest figures released by Nevada Gaming Control saw declining casino revenues in June, with a 6 percent drop from the same month the previous year. This included a 5 percent drop for the Strip and 13 percent drop downtown. Reno and South Lake Tahoe both experienced significant upticks, with a 7 and 17 percent jump in winnings, respectively.

DWTSL to Return:

Dancing with the Stars: Live in Las Vegas will return to the New Tropicana for dates commencing in March, 2013, it's been announced.

Blue Men Hiring Today:

There's an open casting call today for the new "Showbot" character that's joining the Las Vegas Blue Man Group production in October. The auditions take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. today in Ballrooms 3 and 4 at the Monte Carlo and these are the criteria for tryouts: Female performers with a height of 5’3" – 5’5" only Small build, physically fit Performers/dancers/actors with a good sense of rhythm and physical theater experience

Cali Card Room Opens Early:

San Jose's new Casino M8trix card room opened to the public Tuesday, a day earlier than the scheduled official opening, when people arrived for what was meant to be a private pre-party and the owners decided to let them in. The property had originally been due to open in April, but has been fighting to win permit approval from the city.

Disturbing Billboards Down:

Two roadside billboards this morning that were alarming Las Vegas drivers have been removed. The billboards each featured political comments about the economy, together with lifelike bodies hanging from nooses. The company that rents the billboard space has confirmed that the messages were not acts of vandalism, while local Halloween attractions rushed to confirm that they were not behind the provocative messages.

Strip Litterbugs Stopped:

An ordinance targeting littering on the Las Vegas Strip was approved Tuesday by the Clark County Board of Commissioners. The new ordinance will oblige the "porn slappers" responsible for distributing adult handbills to clean up every 15 minutes within a 25-foot radius of where they're standing. Violation of the rule will be a misdemeanor offese carrying a penalty of up to a $1,000 fine, or six months in jail.

New Operator for Resorts:

It's been announced that the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority will take over operations of Atlantic City's oldest casino, making it the first tribe to have a presence in Atlantic City. The news follows the February death of co-owner and former CEO Dennis Gomes, a veteran Atlantic City operator.

Facebook Launches Real-Money Gaming App:

For the first time, Facebook has launched a gambling app that offers real cash prizes. Bingo & Slots Friendzy, available to users in the U.K. market only, includes a selection of bingo and slots games that users can play with real money, instead of Facebook Credits. Players must be aged 18+.

"American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks has added dates to his limited-duration run in Bally's Indigo Lounge. Additional shows have been announced for Aug. 21, and Aug. 23 – 25. General Admission tickets are $29.99, plus tax and fees.

Country Stars Confirmed for Vegas:

Country couple Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have been confirmed as the long-rumored new headliner act for the Venetian Theater, taking over from Phantom and Blue Man. Their "Soul 2 Soul" show will begin Dec. 7 and run through April; tickets, which start at $95.50, go on sale Wednesday. 2Q Loss for MRI:

Just like rival Caesars Ent., MGM Resorts International also posted a second-quarter loss double what analysts had forecast, saying that visitors during the period spent more at casinos and paid higher hotel rates, but saw fewer shows, bought cheaper food, and shopped less in an age where major resort-casinos frequently make more from non-gambling activities than they do from the gaming floor.

2Q Loss Widens for Caesars Ent:

Caesars Entertainment Corp. released its second quarter earnings today to reveal a widening 2Q net loss of $241.7 million, or $1.93 per share, compared to a loss of $155.5 million or a net loss of $1.24 per share for the same period last year. The current loss is more than double the 82 cents/share analysts had predicted, with Chairman Gary Loveman attributing the results to "difficult economic conditions [that] led to lower visitation in several regions."

THEhotel to Go:

It's been annouced that the Morgans Hotel Group is to take over control of a rebranded THEhotel late 2013. The new Delano Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay will feature three new restaurants and a nightclub by the Light Group, which is now owned by Morgans. The Delano South Beach brand was apparently chosen as a conscious play to attract the Latin American and European markets.

Hard Rock Hearts Hearts:

35 Steaks & Martinis at the Hard Rock Casino is hosting a "Wine Week" charity fundraiser and promo all summer, with a different charity benefitting each week. Now through Aug. 8, the American Heart Association is the beneficiary, with guests receiving 25% off most wines on the list, and the Hard Rock matching that with a 25% donation going to the charity.

Free Bloomin' Onion:

As a result of NASCAR driver Ryan Newman finishing in the Top 10 in last week's Sprint Cup race, patrons of Outback Steakhouse can receive a complimentary signature Bloomin' Onion' appetizer today only, with any purchase.

More Trouble in Macau:

The seemingly unstoppable Asian gambling mecca has experienced some less-than-positive publicity of late, including news of slowing revenues, the June beating of a prominent casino executive while he dined in his own restaurant, and allegations of organized prostitution and money laundering among casino operators. Now comes a report that Macau police have arrested 150 people in raids at casinos and hotels across the Chinese territory, following a spate of murders and other violence attributed to triad gangs.

Southwest Promo Backfires:

A move by the budget airline to reward a Facebook milestone with discounted flights for "fans" last week went seriously awry when an apparent technical glitch resulted in passengers being charged multiple times -- sometimes as many as 20 -- for their "discounted" seats. Ironically, those affected took to Southwest's Facebook page, where complaints were posted about drained checking accounts, bounced checks, overdrawn credit limits, and canceled bank cards. The airline has promised to reimburse passengers for the "extra" bookings, and for any financial fees incurred as a result of the glitch, but in trying to fix the problem, some passengers have found that all bookings, including the initial half-price trip they were attempting to book. Again, Southwest is assuring passengers that their itinerary will still be honored at the discounted fare.

Celine Extension:

The LV Review-Journal reports that Celine Dion will likely sign a long-term extension that will keep her at Caesars Palace for several years. She's currently in the second year of a three-year contract and sources say the extension will be "longer than her previous deals," the first of which was five years.

Elevator List:

Luxor made USA Today's list of "10 Great Places to Ride an Elevator," on the strength of its "inclinators," the 16 elevators that travel the walls at a 39-degree angle. Luxor was in good company with the likes of Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Empire State Building, and the (real) Eiffel Tower.

Bacchanal Buffet Details:

Caesars Palace spent $17 million on the new Bacchanal Buffet, which is expected to be one of the best in town. Prices will be $19.99 for breakfast, $24.99 for lunch, and $39.99 for dinner when it debuts on September 10.

Sunday Blackjack Mini at Orleans:

The Orleans is running a blackjack mini-tournament today, starting at 2 p.m. The entry fee is $25 and there's a $1,000 first prize. The tourneys will be run every Sunday in August.

Macau Revenues Up, Slightly:

While the 1.5 percent rise in Macau gambling revenues in July was the slowest growth rate since 2009, it still beat some analysts' predictions of stagnation or even falling revenue. Figures released by the city’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau show gaming revenues for July of 24.6 billion patacas ($3.08 billion), up from 24.2 billion patacas for the same month in 2011.

Liberace Movie Seeks Extras:

Guest blogger John Katsilometes, who's sitting in today at Luxe Life for the vacationing Robin Leach, reports that the new HBO Liberace biopic, starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, is seeking extras for an upcoming location shoot at the LVH. "Behind the Candelabra" has an open casting call set for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 6 p.m. Monday. Filming's due to take place at the property from Aug. 24-30.

U.S. 95 Reopened:

U.S. 95 southbound has finally reopened in downtown Las Vegas, near Eastern Avenue, following the series of accidents involving multiple vehicles that shut it down early this morning.

Stratta Out, Allegro In:

Many months after Chef Alex Stratta's dramatic departure from Wynn, his eponymous casual Italian eatery has finally been renamed and rebranded under Executive Chef Enzo Febbraro. Allegro, which opened today, promises to offer "a new take on Italian-American favorites" and is open daily from 5 p.m., with a late-night menu until 6 a.m.

CE MD Casino Gets Approval:

Caesars Entertainment Corp. has been awarded a license to build a $300-million casino in downtown Baltimore, in partnership with Detroit-based Rock Gaming. Harrah's Baltimore, located near to the Baltimore Ravens football stadium, will apparently feature 3,750 slot machine-like video lottery terminals and several restaurants, and is scheduled to go online in 2014.

Stations Senior Update:

We reported in the "Fast Track" feature in the August issue of the LVA newsletter how "Senior Wednesdays" have returned to Station and Fiesta casinos, with players over 50 years old eligible for entry into free slot tournaments and half-point dining from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at select restaurants. We've just been informed by Stations that players club bonuses will not be awarded as part of Senior Wednesdays this month, however.

Small Blow to Valley Food Trucks:

Members of Las Vegas City Council's Recommending Committee voted 2-1 Tuesday in favor of creating a 300-foot buffer zone between food trucks and existing restaurants, who fear their clientele is being poached. The proposal will now go before an Aug. 15 meeting of the full council, which could approve, deny, or amend it. Interested parties have been campaigning for an 800- or 1,000-foot buffer zone to protect brick and mortar businesses.

Threat of Flooding Continues:

National Weather Service has issued another Flash Flood Watch, in effect through 11 p.m. for Clark County, with up to another two inches of heavy rainfall is expected. Conditions on the roads remain hazardous, with U.S. 95 southbound remaining closed to traffic at Eastern Avenue following an earlier accident involving three semi-trucks and 14 vehicles. According to NHP, the freeway will be closed for several hours.
