Chippendales Go Global:

September 30, 2012 13:11
While BBC America has two teams of chefs racing to Las Vegas tonight, you can also catch Las Vegas Chippendales Jaymes Vaughan and James Davis in the season premiere of "The Amazing Race" (8 p.m. Sunday, KLAS-TV, Channel 8). The duo, who are best buddies, took a break from their performing duties at the Rio to participate in the round-the-world contest, which this season sees teams covering up to 25,000 miles across nine countries, including visits to China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands. While the prize for winning remains at $1 million, if the team that comes in first in the first leg goes on to win the race, the prize will double to $2 million.

Excalibur Restaurant Update:

September 30, 2012 13:10
The latest word on the abrupt closure of Lynyrd Skynyrd BBQ & Beer and American Burger Works, as first reported in this column on Friday, is that both venues will remain closed after their Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings, although landlord Excalibur could face damages as a result, reports the R-J. The Strip resort was prohibited from leasing the spaces to another tenant until the legal wranglings have been resolved, with the dispute apparently revolving around whether Excalibur properly terminated the leases, two years into 10-year terms, after contractors earlier this year filed $1.1 million in liens for unpaid work -- fines which an attorney for the hotel says it paid off. The restaurants were effectively shut down Wednesday when Excalibur erected walls in front of them, barring entry.

Airspace Restrictions:

September 29, 2012 15:31
The FAA plans to restrict airspace around Las Vegas from Sunday evening through Wednesday while President Barack Obama is staying in Henderson. The move won't affect McCarran commercial traffic, but eight local Grand Canyon tour companies will be operating out of Jean Airport, about 25 miles south of the Strip, for the duration and everal other area airports will be closed to general aviation. Local helicopter air-tour companies will still be to operate their nighttime sightseeing tours out of McCarran.

The format pits eight British cefs against a team of American counterparts in a race to cook their way across the country, from L.A. to New York, for a $100,000 grand prize. The race begins on Santa Monica Pier, where both teams are stripped of their cash and credit cards and challenged to use their culinary and business skills to make it to Las Vegas and beyond in an elimination format that will eventually leave just one chef standing.

NLV Farm Could Benefit from Bacon Shortage:

September 29, 2012 14:16
With summer droughts in Europe and N. America impacting the production of corn, a staple pig feed, the National Pig Association is warning of the likelihood of a bacon shortage next year, pushing up prices for our morning rashers. This is bad news for breakfast lovers, but could be good news for Bob Combs' North Las Vegas pig farm, which is home to some 2,500 porkers who dine not on corn, but on leftovers from Strip buffets, making them some of the leading recyclers in our community. September 28, 2012 11:41
Our thanks to @DailyFiasco for this on-again, off-again story, the latest round of which has Excalibur's Lynyrd Skynyrd BBQ & Beer, and sister restaurant American Burger Works, which both closed without notice yesterday, apparently now set for an imminent return, perhaps as soon as next week. This follows word of Chapter 11 bankruptcy-protection filings by Nuthin’ Fancy, LLC and ABX Burgers, LLC, respectively (both eateries are ultimately under the Drive This! brand banner). We'll keep you informed as the hokey pokery continues.

September 27, 2012 12:58
As part of its ongoing remodel, starting Oct. 26 MGM Grand will introduce a limited number of "Stay Well" smart rooms, specifically designed to combat jetlag, while banishing other nasties like germs and water-borne chemicals. With lighting systems crafted to regulate melatonin levels, EMF (electromagnetic field) protection to help get your Circadian Rhythm on track, Vitamin C-infused shower water, and other amenities, like access to the Wellness Channel and tips from Dr. Deepak Chopra, the rooms are designed to make healthy living easy. We inquired about rates, and for the random dates we checked, the rooms were $25 more than the equivalent regular room for the same night (a room with two queens on a Friday was $300/$275, respectively, while a room with single queen on a Monday was $185/$160).

Halloween Lowdown:

September 27, 2012 10:45
Talking of gore, we forgot to draw to your attention the HUMUNGOUS 2012 'ween listings we've posted in our Spotlight feature -- and there's more to come! Already Vegas has more haunted houses and phantasmagorical parties than you can shake a chocolate skeleton at, and keep checking back as new events get added (we'll put them at the top, or the bottom, or something, so you can tell which ones are new).

Goretorium Time:

September 27, 2012 10:16
The much-hyped year-round horror attraction from "Splat Pack" director Eli Roth opens tonight with a chainsaw ribbon-cutting ceremony (will it be a ribbon, or perhaps someone's large intestine that Roth severs for the occaision?) The multi-level horror experience, set in fictional '60s hotel The Delmont, where guests check in but never leave, is designed to be a truly terrifying experience and is equipped with "chicken hallways" - escape routes for visitors who can't take it. The Goretorim is located above Walgreens in the Harmon Corner Plaza (opposite the Cosmo) and admission starts at $35 (for tix purchased online) and $40 if you purchase at the Box Office. We recommend watching the trailer for a taste of what's in store, before deciding to pay a visit.

Water Park Land Purchased:

September 26, 2012 16:13
It was back in November last year that we first reported on plans for a new water park for Henderson, and this week it was announced developers Cowabunga Bay Las Vegas have purchased 22 acres of desert land, near the intersection of Gibson Road and Galleria Drive, in the first step toward making their vision a reality. Meanwhile, the the new Splash Canyon water park on the other side of town, originally planned for this year, will not open before next spring, at the earliest. The $20-million attraction is due to be built on a 35-acre space at Fort Apache, between Maule Avenue and Warm Springs Road. Las Vegas has been without a water park since 2004, when Wet 'n Wild closed, with subsequent plans and rumors never coming to fruition, so we hope at least one of these new projects makes it to completion.

With virtually all the formerly bankrupt Monorail's debt having been earsed following a two-year-long reorganization, manager of the transit service are now looking toward a possible route expansion, plus plans to boosting ridership, as the way forward. The Monorail's CEO is quoted in the R-J as stating that they need more active involvement from the city's casinos in order to increase the passenger count, while any expansion of the route, either downtown or to the airport, would be dependent on federal transportation funds, rather than the private sector.

Bad Call Refund at the D:

September 26, 2012 08:54
Quick, fish that losing ticket out of the trash. We've just learned that the D is canceling losing tickets and refunding players who bet the Green Bay Packers at their sports book on Monday night. The refund is for bets on the Packers to win by pointspread or money line only (no parlays, teasers, etc.). The bet has to have been made at the D and you have to produce your ticket to get the amount of your wager returned. Tickets on the Seahawks to win are also being paid. Stong move!

NFL Call Affects Gamblers:

September 26, 2012 08:20
The end-of-game call by NFL replacement referees in Monday night's Packers/Seahawks game had a big effect on gamblers. The Packers were 3.5-point favorites and the Packers led 12-7 going into the final play. Had the call been an interception, as most thought it should have been, the Packers would have covered the spread and Green Bay bettors would have cashed. But when the play was ruled a touchdown, the final score was 14-12 Seahawks, making Seattle tickets winners. Las Vegas sports-betting expert RJ Bell has been quoted in several news stories estimating that the the call may have caused more than a $300 million swing for gamblers, with most of the benefit going to the bookmakers given that most bets were on the Pack.

The prized fatty beef now will remain an ongoing feature of the menu, U.S. Customs processing timetables permitting. For those of you unaware of the significance of this development, check out Al Mancini's recent and enlightening article on this subject, which you can find in the Question of the Day archives (9/11/2012).

The good news is that our recent technical issues seem to have been resolved, and the site and forums should all be working smoothly now; the bad news was that COX Communications threw one final wrench in the works and, somehow, managed to strip out all the formatting from today's Question of the Day after it had been posted last night (grrrrrr). Now, all the paragraph breaks and links should be back in there (it might take a moment or three to cache, so check back in a couple of minutes). Sorry for any confusion.

The last time we're aware of one of our water closets being nominated for this award was in 2009, when Venetian's Zefferino made the short list, only to be beaten by the Shoji Tabuchi Theatre's palatial facility, where the "gentlemen's lounge" comes complete with black lion-head sinks imported from Italy, black leather chairs, a marble fireplace, and -- wait for it -- a billiard room with a hand-carved mahogany pool table.
