Deeper Analysis of the Hawaiian Marketplace Sale:

June 30, 2019 10:20

The parcel of land, of which the Hawaiian Marketplace and Cable Center Shops that sold on Friday for $172 million are a piece, was assembled in the early 2000s by billionaire Robert Sillerman with the idea of building a $3.1 billion Elvis Presley-themed megaresort with 2,900 rooms and 14 restaurants. Sillerman's grand plan became another victim of the recession when he had to forfeit the land to lenders in 2008; it was later bought by Spectrum Group Management for $220 million, a fraction of what it cost. In a story for CDC Gaming Reports about the sale of the 9.5-acre stretch, with 700 feet of Strip frontage, by Spectrum to Gindi Capital, writer Buck Wargo reports that investors no longer believe that the best use of available land on the Las Vegas Strip is for a new hotel-casino, but rather value-oriented retail. “I see the Vegas Strip as Time Square West, with an incredible amount of foot traffic at a fraction of the rent,” said Eli Gindi, principal of Gindi Capital. Gindi described the Strip as "one of the best retail streets in the nation."

Las Vegas' Second Drive-In Movie under Construction:

June 29, 2019 10:33

If all goes according to plan, Las Vegas will boast a second drive-in later this summer. Burger51, a combo drive-in-movie theater and drive-thru burger joint, is in the early stages of construction at 101 N. Decatur Blvd. a block north of the Decatur-US 95 interchange. It's the brainchild of the proprietor of the Heart Attack Grill downtown and according to VegasEater.com, it's "designed with a sci-fi futuristic dystopian theme and 1950s' retro style, where customers will place their orders at the drive-thru, then park to watch vintage horror and science-fiction films on the outdoor movie screen." Eater says that Burger51 hopes for a grand opening before the end of summer. Burger51 will join the the West Wind Drive-in Movie Theater located at 4150 W Carey Ave. near N. Rancho Drive just south of the North Las Vegas Airport, which opened in 1964.

Hawaiian Marketplace and Neighbor Sell for $172 Million:

June 29, 2019 08:03

A New York-based investment firm, Gindi Capital, has bought 9.5 acres of Strip land for $172 million, or $18.1 million an acre. The stretch of real estate includes the defunct Hawaiian Marketplace and the Cable Center Shops next door. According to the press release, the plans include razing the existing buildings and opening "a new flagship retail, entertainment, and dining experience.” The parcel is a little more than half of a long and relatively shallow 18-acre strip of land between MGM Grand and Planet Hollywood controlled by Spectrum Group Management, which bought the property out of bankruptcy in 2010. Spectrum pieced off a $30 million section to Walgreens and the demolished Smith & Wollensky building to the Showcase Mall for $59.5 million. It still owns six acres on the corner of the Strip and Harmon. No other details were released about the new "experience" planned by Gindi.

Monsoon Season Is on the Way:

June 28, 2019 13:17

The Las Vegas (and southwestern U.S.) monsoon season begins at this time of year and continues through the end of September. During the hot and mostly dry summer months, residents and visitors can also see massive thunder and lightning storms, ferocious winds, and heavy flooding from weather systems that blow in from the south off the Gulf of California, the southeast from the Gulf of Mexico, or some combination of the two. Predicting the severity of monsoon season is tricky and historically, there can be no monsoon (1944) up to a combined total of nearly a month of rain and winds (22 days of storms in 1955). Motorists can be overwhelmed by fast-rising water from flash floods, especially if they think they can make it through, but can't. If you're caught in a monsoon storm or flood, just remember the National Weather Service slogan: Turn Around, Don't Drown.

Gambling Win Down Again:

June 28, 2019 11:11

Though visitor volume was up in all categories in May, including convention attendance, occupancy rates, and a new record for passenger traffic through McCarran Airport  (4.59 million passengers, surpassing the previous record of 4.44 million set in October 2018), gambling revenue was down pretty much across the board. For Nevada overall, May recorded the largest decrease of the year, 6% less than May 2018, while the Strip was down nearly double that at 11.1%. It was the sixth straight month of lower gambling numbers on the Strip. The big decline was in baccarat (54.8%), but a decline in the sports betting handle was also substantial, down 45.1%. Year to date, the Strip win is down 4.9%.

In terms of occupations, food prep and serving, including fast food, comprised the most common job, with a little more than 60,000 employees, followed by retail sales (35,890), cashiers (25,640), janitors and cleaners (22,970), laborers and material handlers (22,110), housekeepers (21,980), office clerks (21,760), customer service reps (21,480), security guards (19,230), and casino dealers (18,670).

And James Holzhauer Goes Down on Back-to-Back Bad Beats:

June 25, 2019 10:13

Local "Jeopardy!" phenom James Holzhauer played in the World Series of Poker yesterday. In the 1,867-player $1,500-buy-in Super Turbo Bounty no-limit hold ’em event, he'd built his stack from $25,000 to $86,000 when he lost an all-in hand of pocket sevens to pocket fives that flopped a set. On the very next hand, he held a king-jack against a king-10 and another 10 eliminated him in 454th place (the top 281 places cashed). Holzhauer had pledged half his winnings to Project 150, a North Las Vegas charity that helps homeless high-school students.

Vegas To Get Tribal?:

June 24, 2019 13:07

Scott Roeben of the VitalVegas.com blog writes in his latest post, "It’s clear sovereign tribal nations have their eye on Las Vegas in a big way" and "The first big move by a tribe in the Las Vegas market looks to be a partnership between Virgin Hotel Las Vegas and Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment." Roeben, the interactive marketing manager for the Fremont Street Experience, has the inside track on these matters and though he loves to swirl rumors, they almost always come to fruition. He's been told "reliably" that the Mohegan tribe, which owns and operates the Sun Casino-Resort in Connecticut, will manage the new Virgin casino. And could the Mohegans or another tribe be potential buyers of a Caesars Entertainment Strip property or two when the new company is ready to sell?

Eldorado Winds Up with Caesars:

June 24, 2019 07:40

Reno-based Eldorado Resorts is acquiring Caesars Entertainment in a deal worth $17.3 billion in cash, stock, and debt. The deal will create the largest U.S. gaming operator, with a possible 60 owned, operated, and managed casino–resorts across 16 states. After the merger, Eldorado shareholders will own 51% of the combined outstanding stock and Eldorado’s management team will be in charge of the new company, which will be headquartered in Reno, operate under the Caesars name, and trade on the Nasdaq Global Select Market. Eldorado will probably need to sell some of the new company's assets to attenuate federal anti-trust issues before the deal takes effect, with an anticipated closing date in the first half of 2020; Eldorado's CEO hinted that the new company could offload some Strip properties, which could be good for consumers. The deal requires approval by gaming regulators in a number of states, the Federal Trade Commission, and shareholders. Eldorado Resorts dates back to the opening of the Eldorado Casino on S. Virginia Street in Reno in 1973 and has expanded swiftly in recent years. The founding Carano family is still its largest shareholder.

“Seven Magic Mountains" Repainted:

June 23, 2019 10:14

If you're driving along I-15 around Jean, NV, you'll see the newly painted “Seven Magic Mountains.” Installed by Swiss-born New York-based mixed-media artist Ugo Rondinone in May 2016, the large-scale public-art exhibition's original day-glo-bright yellows, purples, reds, and blues — “a creative expression of human presence in the desert — had worn off over the three years; the Nevada Museum of Art and the Art Production Fund funded the fresh coat. The seven 30- to 35-feet-tall totems of 33 car-sized boulders, each weighing about 20 tons and cut from a Nevada quarry, were originally scheduled to remain through May 2018, but the dismantling date was extended through 2021.

Red Rock Canyon Fields Record Crowds:

June 23, 2019 07:51

According to a story in today's Las Vegas Review-Journal, more than three million people visited Red Rock Canyon in 2018, breaking the previous record by more than 600,000 and tripling the total since 2012. The hordes have prompted park managers to close the entrance and loop road when the parking lots are at capacity and vehicles are backed up from the fee gates onto the highway, which happens nearly every weekend in good weather. The Bureau of Land Management is considering various measures to relieve the congestion: an express entrance-exit lane for vehicles dropping off hikers; a 2.5-mile shortcut back to the visitor center so cars don't have to travel the entire 13-mile one-way loop; and a seasonal shuttle system that reduces traffic. For now, it's best to avoid Red Rock Canyon on Saturdays and Sundays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. when traffic is heaviest.

The book is located on the second floor of the casino where the previous William Hill sports book stood. Described as a "satellite," it's changed very little, with the biggest upgrade being an expanded viewing wall. Same for the renovated Vue Bar, which, while not fully integrated into the sports book, also has more TVs above the bar than it did previously. The good quarter 8/5 Bonus Poker progressive games remain, making this one of the best bars in town to watch a game if you want to play high-return video poker while you watch.

With the results of the demographics poll, we'll have a tidy list of vital statistics to place in front of them. If you haven't voted, click the link above, fill in a few blanks, and submit! Will the Justice Department Appeal the Wire Act Reversal?:

June 15, 2019 07:42

An interesting commentary by Howard Stutz of CDC Gaming Reports speculates that the U.S. Justice Department will appeal a New Hampshire district court judge's decision to reverse the Justice opinion, issued in January, that broadens the scope of the Wire Act to  prohibit online casino gambling, online Powerball ticket sales, wide-area progressive slot networks, and mobile sports wagering. The article quotes a gaming analyst who indicates that the DOJ might have ulterior motives for appealing. "They may not like the precedent this sets for other issues, or the loss of face, or any number of other factors that don’t have to do with the issue of online gambling itself.” One of those factors is political pressure, especially from the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling, which is bankrolled by Las Vegas Sands Chairman Sheldon Adelson. But gaming attorney Tony Cabot predicts that it's "unlikely" an appeals court would overturn the district court judge's decision, which would essentially preclude the Supreme Court from wading into the issue.

Big Snowmelt Helps Lake Mead:

June 14, 2019 13:11

With last winter's snowfall up to 138% of normal in the Colorado Basin, Lake Powell is rising fast from the melt. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation predicts that Powell will rise 50 feet this year from 12 million acre-feet of runoff, 112% of average and nearly three times as much as last year. The huge influx will allow federal water managers to release the full nine million acre-feet from Powell to flow into Lake Mead. It's a huge turnaround from last year, when Mead's surface level dropped so low that water managers were getting ready to institute emergency water-shortage measures. The specter of a shortage declaration, according to the Bureau, has been postponed for at least two years.

Books Take a Beating on the Blues:

June 13, 2019 13:12

"All these long shots in every sport, if they come back and win, we’re going to lose. That’s the boat we’re in,” Tony Miller, Golden Nugget sports book director, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal this morning about the St. Louis Blues beating the Boston Bruins in last night's Stanley Cup Game 7. A number of Vegas sports books took futures bets on the Blues at up to 300-1 in January, when they were in dead last place in the league -- and today they're paying off, big time.

Golden Gate's Original 99-Cent Shrimp Cocktail Back, with Conditions:

June 12, 2019 10:13

Yes, it's the original Golden Gate shrimp cocktail: The recipe is on loan to the 7th and Carson restaurant downtown from Derek Stevens, owner of the Golden Gate, till Circa opens. We reviewed it in the currrent issue of the Las Vegas Advisor: same tulip glass full of cold-water Bay shrimp (though the cocktail sauce is a lot hotter than we remember it), but it's going for $9.99, ten times the original price. For the rest of this month, however, it's available for 99 cents -- from 5 to 6 p.m. only and with the purchase of an entree. So it's not a standalone 99 cents, but it is a good side dish for a buck.

It was the fourth consecutive year that revenues increased, but last year seven states -- New Jersey, Delaware, Mississippi, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia -- launched legal sports betting for the first time. The new jurisdictions boosted sports betting revenues 65% over 2017 to $430.2 million. Nationwide, taxes on gaming revenue reached just under $10 billion, an increase of 3.1% over 2017 and a new record, and that didn't include sales, room, entertainment, income, and other taxes paid by the casino industry.

In honor of the Hard Rock Cafe's 48th annual "Founders Day" on June 14, the worldwide restaurant chain is introducing 20 new menu items, one of which is a 24-karat-gold-leaf burger. The half-pound burger is topped with Tillamook cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion -- and a leaf of 24-karat edible gold. From what we understand, gold leaf is flavorless, odorless, and biologically inert, meaning it passes through the digestive tract without being absorbed and is therefore harmless. The burger will be served at the Hard Rock Cafe in the Showcase Mall on the Strip; the only price we could find was $24.50 (at the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa). All proceeds from the burger will be donated to Action Against Hunger, a global humanitarian organization.

Stadium for Las Vegas Major League Soccer Team?:

June 06, 2019 07:31

The Las Vegas City Council has passed a resolution allowing a local developer to start negotiations with Major League Soccer to build a stadium at Cashman Center downtown. The resolution gives the developer and the city six months to firm up financing details and make a bid for the Las Vegas Lights soccer team, now playing its second season in the United Soccer League, one level just below MLS, to become an MLS expansion team. The plan would replace Cashman Field, where the Lights play, with a 22,000- to 25,000-seat stadium as part of a mixed-use development on 60 acres just north of downtown. Meanwhile, Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley has also tossed his hat into the MLS ring, announcing that he's "exploring the possibility" of bringing an MLS team to Las Vegas to play in the 65,000-seat Raiders' stadium, which is looking to fill up its events schedule. In MLS' first season in 1996, it had 10 teams. It has now expanded to 24 teams and will have 29 by 2022. The 30th team is up for grabs; Las Vegas, Phoenix, Detroit, and Charlotte are on the short list for number 30.

The Sahara Hotel-Casino Returns to Sahara Avenue:

June 05, 2019 13:25

According to Scott Roeben of VitalVegas.com, a "well-placed source" has confirmed that the SLS will be rerebranded by returning to the original name of the property, Sahara Hotel and Casino, and the new-old name "will be announced in the next few weeks." The Sahara opened in 1952 and survived three ownership groups through 2007, when it was sold to L.A. real estate and entertainment mogul Sam Nazarian. Nazarian closed it in May 2011. After a $415 million upgrade, the property reopened in August 2014 as SLS, which stands for "Style, Luxury, and Service," but none of the three worked out for Nazarian, who sold the hotel-casino to Stockbridge Real Estate Group, little more than a year later. Stockbridge lasted two and a half years before selling to Alex Meruelo, who also owns the Grand Sierra in Reno and is rumored to be buying a second Vegas casino.

Holzhauer: What a Run!:

June 04, 2019 07:45

It was bound to happen sometime and it did. Emma Boettcher, a  27-year-old librarian at the University of Chicago who wrote her master's thesis in 2016 on "on predicting the difficulty of trivia questions using 'Jeopardy!' clues," defeated Las Vegas sports bettor James Holzhauer on yesterday's "Jeopardy!" show, which was taped in March. Boettcher took the lead during the Double Jeopardy round with an all-in bet on her Daily Double; she also consistently beat Holzhauer on the buzzer, then answered correctly. Holzhauer bet just enough on Final Jeopardy to win by $1 if Boettcher answered incorrectly, but it was a Shakespeare question and Boettcher wrote her undergraduate thesis at Princeton on Shakespeare's plays. Holzhauer went 25 for 25 on the show, while Boettcher went 22 for 22, but he buzzed in first on only 42% percent of clues, his worst performance since his second game on April 5. In his 33 games, Holzhauer won $2,464,216, $58,485 less than the record set by Ken Jennings in 2004. But he set every other record in the book: the three highest winning amounts, the 16 most prolific performances in the show's 35 seasons and 23 of the top 27 overall with an average of $77,000 in winnings, and answering correctly 97% of the time.
