The Los Angeles Dodgers are -135 favorites over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 6 of the MLB World Series. The total is 7.5.
VisualCapitalist studied the cost per kilowatt hour in all 50 states and found that Nevada's is the lowest at 10.1 cents (averaging residential at 11.4 and commercial at 8.8 cents per). North Carolina, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Idaho ranked 46-49 respectively, all less than 11.5 cents. Hawaii was the highest at 38.3 cents per kWh, followed by California (30.1), Massachusetts (26.7 ), Alaska (24.9), and Maine (24.6). VisualCapitalist explains that the lowest grouping "benefits from abundant natural resources like hydro, coal, or wind. In addition, they tend to have lower regulatory costs and less congestion on their power grids."
September was the ninth consecutive month that tourism declined in Las Vegas. Compared to the same months in 2024, the number of visitors was down 1.1% in January, 11.9% in February, 7.8% in March, 5.1% in April, 7% in May, 11% in June, 12% in July, 7% in August, and 9% in September. Casino and tourism executives and Wall Street analysts continue to try to put a positive spin on the decline, hailing the fourth quarter of 2025 and the early quarters of 2026 for their probable recovery in visitation, convention attendance, and gaming revenue, but we can't help but recall their saying the same thing after the first and second quarters of the year. We'll see.
The Baltimore Ravens are -7.5 favorites over the Miami Dolphins in tonight's Thursday Night Football game. The total is 51.
We don't often invite people back for a second interview on our YouTube channel, but the ever-amusing, informative, and glib Dave Stann is one of them and you can catch the latest iteration below. Once known as Hollywood Dave, he burst onto the scene in the World Series of Blackjack, in which he was the runner-up, in 2004. After everyone got over the shock of his Hollywood persona (ex-actor shtick to disrupt and distract the other players), it turned out that he was a top-notch blackjack, and later poker, tournament player. Tune in for Dave's acting career, his deal with Annie Duke, lots of information about BJ tournaments, his other passions of gaming-app development and crypto, his favorite Vegas restaurant and gambling book, and much more. It's a fun and quick 50 minutes that you won't regret spending with us.
Las Vegas visitation continued its downward spiral in September. Numbers released by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority yesterday show a nearly 9% decrease in visitors, which translates to 300,000 fewer than in September 2024. In addition, a 19% drop in convention attendance led to a significant drop in midweek room nights; overall occupany decreased by 5.2% and the 3% decline in the average daily room rate resulted in nearly 10% less revenue per room year over year. MGM Resorts, like Caesars, was down across the board in the third quarter and on its Q3 earnings call, also yesterday, CEO Bill Hornbuckle made a rare admission: Charges such as resort and parking fees were overpriced in terms of what the market could bear. Ya think? He confessed, "We should have been more sensitive to the overall experience at a place like Excalibur. To those customers, you can’t have a $29 room and a $12 coffee." Then he said, "Shame on us. We’ve gone through the organization and we think, we hope, we believe, we’ve price-corrected.” We haven't seen evidence of it, but admittedly, we're not price comparing on the Strip. Maybe a coffee at Excalibur is only $10 now.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are -200 favorites over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 5 of the MLB World Series. The total is 8.
In its third-quarter earnings call yesterday, Caesars executives tried to spin the across-the-board red ink. But it's hard to polish a $55 million loss on the quarter, which compared to a $9 million loss in Q324. Room occupancy was down 5%, which equates to 90,000 less room nights through the quarter or 1,000 every day. Perhaps in response, Caesars also announced that free parking for locals and 25% discounts in restaurants, launched in September and supposed to expire yesterday, will be extended until the holidays, Sunday through Thursday only.
Passenger traffic at Reid International dropped 6.4% in September, from 4.75 million in September 2024 to 4.45 million last month. Through the first nine months of the year, the count is down 5% or just under two million arrivals/departures. International travel dropped 13.5%, with Canada once again leading the way; Porter Airlines delivered 46% fewer visitors than last year, Westjet 44%, and Air Canada 18%. After cutting routes nationwide due to bankruptcy, Spirit was down 46%; Delta passengers declined 2% and Amercian 5%. Southwest and United were up slightly.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are -205 favorites over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 4 of the MLB World Series. The total is 8. Note, this line was posted with the game in progress.
A 53-foot-tall red fir (Abies magnifica) from the Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in northern Nevada will be on display in Washington, D.C., as this year's National Christmas Tree. The giant fir was cut down last week and will begin its journey east as a float in the Nevada Day parade (Saturday) in Carson City. Life never imitates art exactly, but in this case, it comes close: Our novel, The National Tree, is the story of the proprietor of a towering spruce selected as the nation's capital's Christmas tree, then driven across the country by him and his wayward son on a picaresque journey of discovery. The book was turned into a Hallmark made-for-TV movie.
Some mouse named Mickey, who works for an obscure company that runs amusement parks in southern California and central Florida, will make an appearance in Las Vegas for the first time ever. The Disney Company and Formula 1 inked a partnership deal in May to share the stage, so to speak, in their respective events and venues. Apparently, F1 has become popular with the kids, thanks in part to Netflix's docuseries “Formula 1: Drive to Survive,” and Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, and Donald are favorites of the jet-setting high-rolling cigar-smoking bling-displaying race enthusiasts. As such, Mickey and Friends will perform on the main stage over the lake at Bellagio during the race festivities, complete with music and pyrotechnics. Other cartoon-character events are planned for the weekend, both on the Strip and in the neighborhoods. "Now fans can look forward to seeing Mickey & Friends in the high-speed world of Formula 1 through experiences, content, and merchandise around the globe,” Disney said in a press release. We'll wait for film at 11.
As part of the “Inspiring Spring Mountain Redevelopment Plan,” work has begun on a new pedestrian crosswalk across Spring Mountain Road east of Arville that will link Chinatown Plaza on the south side and Shanghai Plaza on the north. When completed, according to the press release, the crosswalk will comprise pedestrian-activated flashing beacons to alert drivers when the crosswalk is in use, high-visibility crosswalk markings for improved daytime and nighttime awareness, dedicated spot lighting focused on the crossing to enhance visibility after dark, and ADA-compliant curb ramps and signage to ensure accessibility for all users. The work will be ongoing through the first week of December, Mon.-Fri. 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with lane restrictions, sidewalk detours, and limited access to driveways. The redevelopment plan also includes infrastructure and lighting improvements, crosswalks, and mobility upgrades.
The Kansas City Chiefs are -10.5 favorites over the Washington Commanders in tonight’s Sunday Night Football game. The total is 48.
Though the Brightline West high-speed rail line is underfunded by roughly $6 billion (so far), work continues on the Las Vegas train station. It's slated for a 33-acre site on the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard between Blue Diamond and Warm Springs roads across from the Las Vegas South Premium Outlets about three miles from the south end of the Strip. A lane reduction on the Boulevard between Robindale and Warm Springs roads went into effect today that will last for three weeks. All the northbound lanes will remain open, but one southbound lane will be closed for work on the storm and sewer system. The lane is expected to reopen just before Thanksgiving.
Only 120 years after John Miller bought it, his great-grandson sold the land under the Golden Gate to Derek Stevens. Miller, who bought the property for $1,750 (around $65,000 in today's dollars) in 1905, erected a tent lodging called Miller Hotel while building Las Vegas' first proper hotel, the Nevada. Miller formed the Sal Sagev Hotel Company in 1908; Sal Sagev (Las Vegas spelled backwards) became the name of the hotel in 1931. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Stevens "got to know" Miller's granddaughter when he first became involved with the Golden Gate in 2006 and offered to buy the land over the years, but the family didn't want to relinquish it; they did extend the lease until 2061. Stevens didn't give a reason why they finally sold him the property and said only that it cost him "a lot of money," but the R-J looked up the records and found that he paid $19 million for the parcel, which with a little digging, we found to be about an acre and a third. The sales price represents a total real return (adjusted for inflation) of approximately 29,131% over the 120 years. And based on the original $1,750 that Miller paid for the property, it's a 1,085,614% return on investment. If that's not an advertisement for buy and hold, we don't know what is.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are -200 favorites over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 3 of the MLB World Series. The total is 8.
The Green Bay Packers are -2.5 favorites over the Pittsburgh Steelers in tonight’s Sunday Night Football game. The total is 45.5.
After a 15-show residency at Sphere in May and June, Kenny Chesney will return for five (so far) dates next June. Hard-rock veteran band Foo Fighters will play one night at Allegiant Stadium (yes, they're that big) on Sept. 26; artist presale on Wednesday, general tickets on Friday (yes, this far in advance). SimpleFlying.com tracks the most popular airline routes by seat availability in the U.S. and ranks the monthly top 10. In October, Reid International placed seventh and tenth. The Los Angeles-Las Vegas route came in at seventh with 261,000 seats, even though it was a "significant dropoff" from last October's 300,000 seats. Denver-Las Vegas ranked number 10 with 239,000 seats, also down from last year's roughly 250,000 seats. New York LaGuardia to Chicago is the most popular route with 320,000 seats, up 13% year over year, while New York JFK to Los Angeles is second at 307,000 seats, up 9%. SimpleFlying reports that the U.S. domestic aviation market is the largest in the world by far, with 92 million seats in October, compared to China (#2) with 72 million and India (#3) with a mere 15 million.

The Sick New World Festival is an annual (sort of) heavy-metal music gathering held at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds, corner of the Strip and Sahara. Two have taken place, 2023 and 2024; the planned 2025 event was canceled due to the high prices and low sales. Now, the 2026 festival has been announced for April 25 in Las Vegas (a second show is slated for October in Texas). The announced headliners are System of a Down, Korn, and Marilyn Manson; other acts include Bring Me the Horizon, Ministry, Evanescence, AFI, Acid Bath, Knocked Loose, Danny Elfman, Cypress Hill, Mastodon, Underoath, Melvins, Filter, and Clutch. Tickets are on sale now and start at $359.
Boyd Gaming has announced that it will raze Eastside Cannery, its casino on Boulder Highway that has been shuttered since the pandemic closure in March 2020; it never reopened. Over the past five years, Boyd has consistently maintained that ECan's customers have "migrated" to nearby Sam's Town, so market demand was insufficient to bring it back. Now, Boyd plans to complete the process of getting rid of the building, then selling the property to a developer for residential housing. Cyclone fencing is being installed around the acreage in preparation for the demo.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are -150 favorites over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 1 of the MLB World Series. The total is 7.5. Note, this line was posted with the game in progress.

If you've ever wanted to get a peek inside a casino private jet, here's your chance. Behind the Scenes at Wynn is a YouTube channel that "peels back the curtain on what happens to create only-at-Wynn experiences." This video is narrated by a long-time pilot for Wynn Aviation, who describes how the whale global-transportation system works, with great visuals along the way. It might be a bit syrupy, but what the heck; how often do you get a (vicarious) thrill from one of the most exclusive casinos in the world? And thanks to Canada Roy for sending in the link. The Wynn's Gulfstream 550 is at his beck and call.
The big news this morning, to whose Clydesdale bandwagon we're hitching our tricycle, is that an Ole Red-like country dining-entertainment venue will replace Margaritaville at the Flamingo. Margaritaville closed in June 2024 (and one thing no one is mentioning is the food there was terrible and the prices were worse) and, hoping to replicate the success of Ole Red, Blake Shelton's around-the-block-lines success at the Grand Bazaar Shops at the Horseshoe, Caesars Entertainment will open Category 10, the restaurant-bar associated with country star Luke Combs. The Vegas venue will be the second location of the brand; the first and only one so far is in Nashville. Like Ole Red, it will feature dining and dancing on the first floor, plus a bourbon bar on the second, a DJ dance rooftop space, and Beautiful Crazy Women’s Lounge, "a champagne bar and selfie spot inside the women’s restroom, complete with makeup counters and Hollywood mirrors." In case you're wondering, Category 10 is double the highest official intensity of hurricanes; Combs' debut single, "Hurricane," made him famous, reaching number one on the country charts in 2017. (And "Beautiful Crazy" is another song from Combs' debut album.) The 34,000-square-foot Category 10 will open around this time next year.
A new study by Zumper.com, an apartment-rental site, analyzed 100 U.S. cities for "single-friendliness." Eight metrics included the percentage of singles living in the cities, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment, restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment per capita, cost of living, nonfamily income, and unemployment rate. Henderson ranked 100th out of all 100 cities. The rock-bottom rating was based on roughly one in four residents being single, among the lowest percentage nationally; it also received failing grades in rental affordability, employment potential, and restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment venues per capita. And if you're thinking that Henderson might be better than rated due to its proximity to Las Vegas, huh-uh. Sin City placed 82nd out of 100. Like Henderson, the percentage of singles was found to be much lower than the average and our town failed in rental rates, singles income, and employment. The best cities for singles are St. Louis, Knoxville, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, and Pittsburgh, while San Jose, Fresno, Bakersfield, and Gilbert (Arizona) rounded out the bottom five.
The Mob Museum has opened “Digital Underworld,” a new exhibit featuring the rise of cybercrime as the newest frontier of organized criminals. "The display traces the evolution of cybercrime from mischievous hackers experimenting in the 1970s and ’80s to today’s sophisticated ransomware organizations that steal millions of dollars daily, underscoring the threat to anyone with an internet-connected device, per the press release. A central feature is a live cyberthreat map that illustrates cyberattacks occurring in real time around the world, offering a vivid visualization of the scale and persistence of modern-day threats. A large wall mural and panel devoted to ransomware illustrate how criminal enterprises operate just like high-tech startups, underscoring the staggering costs of ransomware—an estimated $156 million lost every day. Additional artifacts on display a Cap’n Crunch cereal toy whistle used to trick pay phones and tools used to infiltrate phone systems, a book published by the creator of the first ransomware in 1989, and equipment used by government contractors to expose vulnerabilities in modern cars. The exhibit is included with Museum admission.
According to a story on Teslarati.com, Las Vegas Loop employees who sit in the driver's seats of the Teslas operating in the tunnels under the Las Vegas Convention Center, Resorts World, and Encore are scheduled to be eliminated. Tesla Models 3 and Y are currently being operated by the Full Self-Driving suite, but drivers also occupy all vehicles to ensure safety. Apparently, Tesla and the Loop have been working toward phasing out the drivers and Elon Musk, who owns both companies, was quoted as saying that the drivers will be gone within "a month or two."
The Los Angeles Dodgers are -265 favorites over the Toronto Blue Jays to win the MLB World Series. This is the first WS appearance for the Blue Jays since they won it back-to-back in 1992 and 1993; the Dodgers won it last year. Game 1 is Friday.
Sphere Entertainment on Friday celebrated the sale of the one-millionth ticket to its immersive giant-screen Wizard of Oz. It announced that $130 million worth of tickets have been sold. It was only five weeks ago that a half-million tickets had been sold; that's more than 14,000 tickets every day since. Pretty impressive for a 75-minute experience at an average ticket price of $130, more than 10 times the average price for a typical movie in the U.S. ($11.30 in 2024).
Thirteen-time Grammy winner Babyface will do an eight-show residency at the Pearl Theater at the Palms. The Pearl isn't known for residencies; we can't remember anyone doing eight shows there. Also, the dates coincide with holiday weekends: Feb. 13 and 14 (Valentine's Day), May 8 and 9 (Mother's Day), Sept. 4 and 5 (Labor Day), and Nov. 13 and 14 (Veterans Day); these are in addition to this year's shows, also over Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 14-15. Babyface is known for his "timeless" R&B and soul musical style with a focus on slow jams and ballads, often termed the "tender-storm" genre. He also writes songs for other artists: Whitney Houston, Madonna, Boyz II Men, Tony Braxton, even Eric Clapton. Tickets go on sale to the public this Friday.

HotelPlanner, a travel-tech company and hotel-booking platform, conducted a survey of room reservations in the top five destination cities over last year's and this year's Thanksgiving weekends and determined that the top two destinations are Las Vegas and New York City. Of the five, including Boston, San Francisco, and Chicago, Las Vegas takes first prize, with 56% of travelers heading this way. In addition, HotelPlanner found that Sin City's popularity has grown 13% over last year, compared to 7% for the Big Apple. It gets even more curious, as Vegas hotel prices for Thanksgiving are up 23% compared to 2024; so far this year, the average room rate per night over the four-day weekend is around $220. And with 330,000 people estimated to be here over that weekend, it's a perfect time not to visit.

A new poll by Phoenix-based Noble Predictive Insights finds that nearly half of Nevadans (46%) believe Las Vegas has become too expensive to visit. The poll queried 746 state residents as to what they attribute the drop in tourism to. Of respondents, another 14% said "political rhetoric and federal policies" are to blame for the drop, 12% selected "less appealing" for their answer, 11% cited resort and hidden fees, 4% weren't sure, 3% blamed airline fares and other general travel costs, 3% cited increased competition from other destinations, and 2% blamed the weather. That left a mere 5% that don't agree that there's a drop in tourism. We note that last week, CEO of the LVCVA Steve Hill, Las Vegas' number one cheerleader, continued to refute this perception, telling a meeting of developers, that the reports of the city’s death as a destination “are greatly exaggerated,” insisting that happy days will be here again soon, referring specifically to the next 15 months.
And now, live from Reid International Airport: a fully automated 24/7 live stream capturing the sights and sounds of takeoffs and landings at Reid International. From the press release: "A PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) camera from CamStreamer is hosted by Las Vegas Airport Live 24/7; with integrated live ATC audio, this is as close as you can get to planespotting at the airport without actually being there." The camera looks out at Runways 26L and 26R, but also captures the action on the airport's other runways, using the airport's own ADS-B surveillance system, which provides accurate real-time information for air-traffic control from aircraft flying within range. That data is translated by the camera, which aims itself at whatever interesting (basically, moving) is happening in its view. There's also an on-screen overlay of the plane and flight information, so you always know what you’re looking at, and live air-traffic-control audio is integrated into the feed, capturing the interaction between pilots and Reid's control tower. And it's all available right here on LVA.com on our webcam page (scroll to the bottom). Check it out -- it's pretty fun.
As work continues on a new parking garage with nearly 6,000 spaces at Station Casino's Durango, the company has filed plans to expand the property by 152,000 square feet. The new space will encompass the casino with a new bar, restaurant, and billiards area, and more outdoor patios, along with a movie theater and bowling alley. These amenities will bring Durango up to the locals standard of Red Rock and Green Valley Ranch, both of which have bowling, movies, and arcades. The process is in its earliest stages; Station expects to begin construction by July 2028.
Based on a well-regarded and consistent forecast from the Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia, Nevada's population is projected to grow by just under a million over the next 25 years, a 27% increase and one beyond the top ten in the nation. Texas will gain the most residents (8.5 million, also a 27% change), followed by Florida (5.2 million, 22%), California (3.1 million, 8%), Washington (2.3 million, 28%), and Colorado (1.7 million, 29%). The bottom five are Illinois (-1.1 million, -8), Michigan (-430,000, -4%), Ohio (-420,000, -3%), Pennsylvania (-410,000, -3%), and Connecticut (300,000, -8%).
According to a story in the Las Vegas Review-Journal based on documents submitted to Clark County, Bally's Corp.'s timeline for the buildout of its megaresort on the site of the A's stadium is three years. The company is counting on permits for the project to be approved in January, so that it can begin construction in April and complete the project in March 2029 in time for the second season of the A's playing its home games in Las Vegas. So much for just the facts, though it's a little to keep a straight face while reporting them. Aware as we are of Bally's Corp's oversized ambitions and undersized bankroll (in trouble with its major investments in Chicago, Australia, New York, and elsewhere, not to mention it's already sold the old Tropicana land), we wonder where the company will come up with the $3 billion it's estimated to cost. Heck, even Wall Street is skeptical; one analyst is already noting "the potential for BALY to sell its development rights [which is all it actually owns on the Strip site] to another party.” Finally, the Las Vegas project is sure to go over the timeline, meaning the stadium, if that's ever completed, will be centered around a major construction site for God knows how long. And that's just the tip of the aporetic iceberg, given the limitations of a News blurb such as this. Stay tuned.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are -5 favorites over the Cincinnati Bengals in tonight's Thursday Night Football game. The total is 45.

The 2025 Las Vegas Book Festival, now in its 24th year, will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free event will be held downtown at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth Street. Harbingers of winter are arriving. A day of rain, then a day of strong winds are now followed by several days of below-normal temperatures. Typically, the high for mid-October is around 80 degrees, but today through the weekend, it will be 20 degrees cooler, in the upper 60s. The lows, as well, will drop into the low 50s and even in the 40s in the higher-elevation western part of the valley. Meanwhile, by early this morning, Lee Canyon ski resort registered up to four inches of snow, the first of the season and much earlier than usual. As we say, these are just portents with nine and a half weeks till the winter solstice; the weather returns to seasonal norms, dry and warm, this weekend.
And speaking of horses, this year, the Helldorado Days Rodeo will take place Nov. 7-8 at the CORE Arena at the Plaza. Opening at four p.m. both days, the Helldorado Carnival will offer a variety of carnival rides and games, including the crowd-favorite mechanical bull. Adjacent to the carnival will be a petting zoo with friendly farm animals; also at the festival will be open-air line dancing. Beginning at 6 p.m., the rodeo will feature bull riding, barrel racing, team and tie-down roping, steer wrestling, and saddle-bronc, breakaway, and bareback riding, with prize purses totaling $40,000, as well as related western-themed events like mutton bustin (a sheep riding competition for future cowboys and cowgirls 4-10 years old and under 60 pounds), a Whiskerino contest, and a historical-exhibit area. General admission tickets are on sale now starting at $10 per person.
If you invite a Clydesdale to press the spin button on your machine and the jackpot hits, does the horse get the W-2G? Apparently to promote the Indian National Finals Rodeo, starting today at South Point Arena & Equestrian Center, an impromptu parade followed a Clydesdale right through the middle of the casino over the weekend. A couple of videos of the parade were posted by Las Vegas Locally and reposted by VegasSlotsOnline. They're worth a peek -- and be sure to read the comments for a smile.

Though it's been held in Europe for a couple of decades, a Best Dealer tournament made its American debut at G2E last week. A total of 34 dealers from around the country competed in tests of their skills in dealing blackjack and roulette, including card pitching and chip racking. The winner, a dealer at Graton casino in northern California, took home a trophy and $5,000; the second- (a dealer at Cosmopolitan) and third-place (Encore) finishers earned $3,000 and $2,000, respectively. You can read the whole story and see a few snapshots here.

In a licensing hearing before the Nevada Gaming Control Board last week, the CEO and CFO of the Rio listened as Board members bemoaned the demise of the Carnival World Buffet. One said, "That buffet was fabulous, a crowd-drawing attraction with lines out the door”; he also mentioned that the food court has been "dead" when he's visited (our experience as well). The CFO responded that he and the CEO "had a discussion a couple of weeks ago to bring back the pro-forma for the buffet to see what it looks like from a capital structure." He added, "When you walk the floor and talk to people, everyone brings up the buffet. It resonates and there’s a lot of pent-up demand from people who had great experiences at the Rio and want a good reason to return.” The Rio execs might've just been paying lip service to the regulators and we're not exactly holding our breath, but wouldn't that be grand?
The Kansas City Chiefs are -2.5 favorites over the Detroit Lions in tonight’s Sunday Night Football game. The total is 51.
Las Vegas boasts three out of the top 25 best new restaurants in the U.S., according to Yelp's latest best-of list. Sgrizzi By Chef Marc placed at #5, the Guest House Las Vegas at #14, and Caramá at #18. Mark Sgrizzi's Italian-steakhouse restaurant first opened at the Ahern on West Sahara, where we tried and loved the pizza. Then he moved to a location way down on Blue Diamond near Rainbow and now serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner; the place gets rave reviews on all the review sites. The Guest House occupies the former Tommy Bahama location at Town Square after a $9 million renovation and features a "new American" menu ($20 salads, $25 shrimp cocktail, $34 rigatoni, $65 filet). Caramá is a Wolfgang Puck Italian restaurant at Mandalay Bay (pizza mid-$20s, pasta $24-$32, chicken/veal $52, steaks $70). The number-one new restaurant in the U.S. is Dōgon by Kwame Onwuachi, whose Maroon restaurant will open at Sahara in the Bazaar Meat space by the end of this year.
Several hours before the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Maria Corina Machado, was announced on Friday, online bets for the Venezuelan opposition leader spiked on the prediction-market platform Polymarket. According to the Guardian, up until Thursday night, Yulia Navalnaya, the economist and widow of former Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, led the odds against all other candidates listed on Polymarket, while Machado's odds weren't quite 4%. Less than two hours later, they'd skyrocketed to 73%, indicating a surge of bets in favor of Machado. One U.S. bettor won $65,000. The head of the Nobel Institute, which goes to enormous lengths to keep the winners of Nobel prizes a secret in a process developed over a half-century, told a Norwegian newspaper that it was “too early to be certain” if the winner had been leaked, but said he expected an investigation to be launched. Looks to us like some kind of insider trading and we'll keep an eye out for the results of the investigation. Thanks to Canada Roy who alerted us to this situation.
After starting the season badly with a record of 14-14, the 14th loss by 53 points, our Las Vegas Aces won last night's fourth game of the WNBA Finals to sweep the Phoenix Mercury and take home their third title in four years. The team won their last 16 regular-season games and in the playoffs lost only three of nine games to finish 2025 on a 25-3 streak. Aces' superstar forward A'ja Wilson was named league MVP for the fourth time in her eight-year career and Finals MVP, plus earned the scoring title and defensive player of the year, the first player to win all four in a single year. The victory parade will take place on Friday on the south Strip.
Charles Oliveira and Mateusz Gamrot are pick ’em in tonight’s UFC main event. In the other featured match, Montel Jackson is -335 over Deiveson Figueiredo.
Despite the LVCVA's see-no-evil hear-no-evil speak-no-evil support of the Las Vegas Loop, the Boring Company's construction practices are wearing out their welcome with the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection. According to the watchdog website ProPublica, Nevada regulators last month sent a cease-and-desist letter to Boring for 800 violations of state rules, including 100 for water pollution and nearly 700 for missed construction inspections. ProPublica cites "digging without approval, releasing untreated water onto city streets, and spilling muck from its trucks." The Nevada Bureau of Water Pollution Control "alleges repeated violations of a settlement agreement that the company entered into after being fined five years ago for discharging groundwater into storm drains without a permit." The agreement compelled the company to comply with state water pollution laws, but inspectors documented the 100 recent violations. The company has also been fined several times for unsafe working conditions, including chemical burns sustained by workers; in addition, "firefighters must decontaminate their equipment after conducting rescues from the project sites." The ProPublica story quoted Elon Musk, who owns Boring Company, as telling the libertarian Cato Institute that it's more efficient to pay environmental fines after the fact than to apply for permits and wait to receive permission.
After disbanding in 2004, the rock-reggae-ska-punk band No Doubt has been resurrected to play a six-show mini-residency at Sphere. No Doubt's six albums, released between 1992 and 2012, have sold more than 33 million units, but the band, co-founded by keyboardist Eric Stefani, is best known as the jumping-off platform for Eric's sister Gwen Stefani, who will perform at Sphere and become the venue's first female headliner. The dates are May 6, 8, 9, 13, 15, and 16. Sign up for the pre-sale on Monday; those tickets become available on Wednesday. General-public tickets go on sale on Friday.
This month's LVA YouTube Update covers the Vegas scene from top to bottom, front to back, A to Z. Anthony and Andrew start by announcing a sponsor for our videos, which is very good news. They then launch into what's going on these days: the rendering for the new Bally's to go with the A's stadium site; Poker Palace's odd closing and imminent reopening; Ellis Island's slick new wing; the good and the bad of the ugly Strip parking situation; a big elimination from Circa Survivor and Anthony's remaining action; a new Dining column in LVA; and much much more. It's fast, it's furious, it's fabulous Las Vegas. Don't miss this one.
The classic-rock big-band Chicago will do another nine shows at the Venetian Theater in February. It's the ninth year in a row the band will play the Venetian; their 60+ plus shows mark the longest-running residency at that theater. And speaking of history, Chicago is the first American rock band to rack up top-40 albums in six consecutive decades (they formed in 1967 and the first album, Chicago Transit Authority, quickly went platinum). Since then, Chicago has sold 40 million albums just in the U.S., with 22 gold, 18 platinum, and 8 multi-platinum albums. Three of the seven original members of the band remain, the keyboardist/vocalist (80-years-old), trumpeter (78), and trombonist (77). Chicago will perform February 13, 14, 15, 18, 20, 21, 25, 27, and 28 and the pre-sale runs Monday at 10 a.m. PT until Thursday at 10 p.m. The general on sale follows on Friday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. PT.
Zapata, a personal-aviation company from France, will be opening their first American flight center in Las Vegas in early 2026. One of the experiences at Zapata's flight center will be its "groundbreaking" AirScooter, a solo, hybrid-electric, VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) aircraft, which takes off and lands vertically and hovers like a helicopter, but also flies like a fixed-wing aircraft. Powered by rotor blades and equipped with semi-autonomous “fly-by-wire” controls, the AirScooter "is designed to deliver a stable, intuitive, and thrilling solo ride for everyone, no pilot’s license required," according to the press release. The flight center will preview during F1 next month ahead of its official opening a few months later.
The Philadelphia Eagles are -7.5 favorites over the New York Giants in tonight's Thursday Night Football game. The total is 41.
VinePair.com used Beer Advocate’s list of the top-rated beers from U.S. breweries with over 100 ratings on the platform to come up with each state’s favorite. Nevada's is Disco Ninja, a 7% New England IPA from Revision Brewing Company in Sparks. It's described as "citrusy and tropical with a light resin note" and can be found, we're told, at Total Wine & More, with three locations around the valley. To go with Disco Ninja, the best pizza in the Silver State, at least according to TastingTable, is found at Solamente, located at 8390 West Sahara Ave. just east of Durango. All the more impressive: The owner and chef was a full-time teacher during the day, and opened the restaurant at night. We've never reviewed it, but we will.
MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle appeared before the Nevada Gaming Control Board yesterday for a hearing over the renewal of his gaming license. In a nice fireside chat with the Board members, Hornbuckle insisted that all the negative headlines about Las Vegas' downward slide are "silly" and that over at MGM, they're "not buying it." (Our comment: Of course they're not buying it. They're selling it.) He also informed the board that the five-day sale last month was a big success: "Normally, we do 150,000-160,000 room nights a week in terms of reservations. "[With the sale] we did just under 300,000." An extra week's worth of reservations in a once-in-a-lifetime sales events -- bully for them. Hornbuckle also had this to say: "The luxury marketplace is doing better than the value marketplace today. We have to pay attention to that, understand value proposition." (Our comment: Oh, they understand the value proposition just fine. They're just not buying it.)
According to AviationA2Z.com, Las Vegas ranks number 16 in overall passenger volume of all U.S. airports. The top five are Chicago O'Hare, Atlanta, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Denver, and Charlotte. The survey also named the dominant carrier and its percentage of total passengers; predictably, Southwest is the highest at Reid International, handling 41% of all passengers. Southwest is also dominant at two of the other top 25 airports: Chicago Midway (88%) and Dallas Love (94%).
Over the weekend, a guest at the Venetian, who wished to remain anonymous, was playing Buffalo Power Pay and hit the Wheel Bonus for the Power Grand Progressive jackpot, winning $2,268,757 on an $11.25 bet.
Through the end of the year, Nevada residents and all Fontainebleau Rewards members, regardless of tier, can park for free in the garage. The fine print: "Complimentary self-parking is subject to availability and does not apply during certain special events." But availability is never a problem in the huge garage and special events are probably limited.
Realtors are clamoring, "This is the best time to buy!" We think next month -- and the month after and the month after -- might be better, but one thing's clear: Prices are dropping. The median price of existing single-family homes sold in September was $470,000. That’s down $10,000 from September 2024 and $15,000 lower than the all-time high of $485,000 hit several months this year. The median price of condos/townhomes was $294,000, down more than $5,200 from September 2024 and well short of the record high of $315,000 set last October. With 7,502 single-family homes (up 37.4%) and 2,605 condos/townhomes (+50.5%) for sale at the end of September, sellers are starting to get the news that the Las Vegas housing market is undergoing a reset.
In Week 5 of the football season, the top-two picked teams and three of the top five in the Circa Survivor contest lost. When the dust settled on Sunday, 7,735 entries had lost and just 4,669 remained. The carnage started on Thursday when the top-picked team, Los Angeles, faced injury-ridden San Francisco. Los Angeles was favored by up to 10 points, but San Francisco won in overtime, knocking out 3,524 Survivor entries. Arizona was another favorite of the week, as Tennessee hadn't won a game. But the Titans beat the Cardinals 22-21 and eliminated another 3,152 entries. That game was called "the worst Survivor beat ever." Finally, Buffalo's loss to the Patriots knocked out 756 entries. All in all, 25% of the original Survivor field remains. In the Grandissimo, only 14 entries had lost going into the week, with 55 remaining, but 15 were eliminated by L.A.'s loss, then 20 more by Arizona's. When Buffalo lost, it left just 16 of the original 69 entries.
Our favorite girl who just wants to have fun, Cyndi Lauper, has announced her first-ever Las Vegas residency, which will take place at the Colosseum at Caesars. Cyndi (and yes, we're on a first-name basis with her) had a string of hits from her debut album, She's So Unusual: "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," "True Colors," "Change of Heart," "Time after Time," and (our favorite) "She Bop." She also won the Grammy for best new artist in 1985. Known for her distinctive fashion and performance style and four-octave vocal range, Lauper, now 72, has released 12 studio albums that sold more than 60 million worldwide; in 2010, Memphis Blues was Billboard's most successful blues album of the year and in 2013, she won the Tony Award for Best Original Score for the Broadway musical Kinky Boots, making her the first woman to win the category by herself. She's won numerous other awards and recognitions, including two Tonys, an Emmy (she's also an actress), and several MTVs, and she'll finally be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month. The Vegas dates are April 24, 25, and 29 and 1, and 2. Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday at 10 a.m. PT.
The Kansas City Chiefs are -3.5 favorites over the Jacksonville Jaguars in tonight's Monday Night Football game. The total is 45.5.
The 25th annual Global Gaming Expo (G2E) starts today at the Venetian Expo Center. The four-day confab is expected to draw more than 20,000 attendees, feature roughly 400 exhibitors, and host more than 100 education sessions and numerous keynote speeches. The hot-button topics this year are, primarily, threats to the gaming industry: rising costs, economic uncertainty, geopolitical turmoil, prediction markets, sweepstakes and social casinos, other illegal operations, the Las Vegas tourism slump, and the reduced gambling-loss tax deduction. Also covered will be artificial intelligence and other new tech, tribal gaming issues, changing corporate-casino strategies, social media, igaming expansion, anti-money-laundering and other regulatory issues, and workplace challenges. The best place to follow the coverage of the speeches, seminars, and vendors is at CDCGaming.com.
The Las Vegas Aces beat the Phoenix Mercury on Friday evening and yesterday to take a 2-0 lead in the WNBA championship series. On Friday, a couple of starters were cold, but Dana Evans came off the bench and had a night for the ages, sinking five of six 3-point shots, including one with seconds left, putting the team ahead by three and winning the game 89-86. Yesterday, the Aces dismantled Phoenix on the road, coming back from eight- and seven-point deficits to win by a commanding 91-78. Game Three of the best-of-seven series remains in Phoenix and will be played on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Need another indication that Las Vegas is trying to attract the high end? We offer you Cote Vegas, which opened yesterday at the Venetian. Cote has four locations, the OG in Manhattan, which opened in 2017 and took only a year to earn a Michelin star; it's the first and only Korean steakhouse with a Michelin star in the U.S. The other three are in Miami, Singapore, and now Vegas. Cote is not only the rare Korean restaurant on the Strip, but it's huge, a multi-story 17,000-square-foot venue that took the place of a department story, Barney's. Also, it cost $35 million to remodel the space, which is designed to be "immersive"; according to the Venetian CEO, it's “part experience, part Michelin-starred meal, part party.” The ground-floor central bar is "cinematically lit so it glows." The dining tables overlook the bar from above and above them are four "sky boxes" or private dining rooms; the largest one, with 14 seats, has its own balcony and a karaoke machine. A DJ spins the background music from a dedicated booth. The meat, mostly Wagyu, is cooked on smokeless tabletop grills and the wine list is extensive, even for the Venetian, with glasses priced from $16 to $415. The signature Butcher’s Feast is $88.88 a person. There's also a steak omakase ($225) and a raw seafood platter ($325). We might try the Blackjack sandwich with A5 wagyu, black truffle, and truffle aioli on milk toast, but we couldn't locate a price; when we do, we'll probably change our mind.
The Buffalo Bills are -7.5 favorites over the New England Patriots in tonight’s Sunday Night Football game. The total is 48.5.
The cost to build Brightline West, the private high-speed rail line between southern California and Las Vegas, has ballooned all the way up to $21.5 billion. Brightline is seeking a $6 billion loan from the federal Department of Transportation to help cover the nearly $10 billion shortfall and is looking to raise another $5.5 billion in a stock sale. The initial projection was a total price tag of $12.5 billion, though some reports we're seeing now peg that sum at $16 billion. Either way, the increased costs are attributed to rising labor, material, and technology expenses.
Magomed Ankalaev is a -285 favorite over Alex Pereira in tonight’s UFC main event. In the other featured match, Merab Dvalishvili is -400 over Cory Sandhagen.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is proclaiming last week's “Fabulous 5-Day Sale” a fabulous success for fabulous Las Vegas, at least in terms of marketing. In case you missed it, the sale ran from Monday September 22 through Friday September 26 and was touted as "the biggest sale in Vegas history." Most offers were at high-end properties, such as up to 25% off room rates and $100 in daily dining credits at Bellagio, Cosmopolitan, Aria, and Vdara; most downtown and many locals casinos also participated. Main Street Station, California, and Fremont were selling two nights all inclusive and $50 in dining credit for $150 total. A few were afterthoughts: South Point's 10% room discount, reduced resort fee, and $20 in free play and Ellis Island's 20% off rooms and free coffee and croissant. Anyway, the LVCVA reported that the campaign drove elevated booking interest, website traffic, time on site, and website referrals, but we'll have to wait until the casinos themselves analyze customer impact and conversion "in the coming weeks." They might even be toutable, but as Anthony Curtis writes in the current LVA, "The Fabulous 5-Day Sale came and went in late September, with the operative word being 'went.' Some of the deals were good, but you can’t get them now — it ran for five days. What was the point of that? Gouging, running a sale, then going back to gouging isn’t gonna get it done."
A second recent report, this one the S&P Cotality Case-Shiller Index, indicates that "buyers who are willing and able to purchase property in Las Vegas are frozen in place." In August, new-home builders closed on 861 sales, down a full 26% year over year, though the new houses sold at a record-high median price of $536,471, up 7.6% compared to August 2024. And the 1,835 existing single-family homes sold in August were down 14% from last year and fetched a median price of $480,000, up nearly 10% year over year and slightly off the record median price of $485,000. The southern Nevada housing market “has downshifted to a much slower gear,” according to the report. Essentially, those in the market to buy a house here have so much inventory to choose from, they're in no hurry to make a decision. Even if they find a house they might buy, they can wait 1) for the price to drop or 2) to find a house they like better.
According to a new study by Redfin, the Las Vegas Valley is leading the way toward the trend nationwide to a buyer's market for residential real estate. The only metro area experiencing a more major move to the buyer's side is Denver. Redfin notes that approximately 13,600 sellers of homes and condos at the end of August compared to 6,900 in the same period last year. Meanwhile, prices remain high; the median price of a single-family house in August was $443,770, a 1.3% increase over August of last year. The real estate site also estimates that "the number of sellers now outpaces buyers locally by 96.7%, up 47.9% year over year." Redfin's chief economist said, "The fundamentals of economics are out of sync in Las Vegas." She explained that higher mortgage rates and rising home prices have sidelined many buyers at the same time that more and more homeowners are selling their properties. That should give buyers more leverage, but sellers aren't dropping their prices. Also, the ripple effect from the slowdown in tourism is discouraging buyers.
Employees of the Transportation Security Administration are considered essential, so 61,000 of the 64,000 TSA workers nationwide will remain on the job during the governmentr shutdown, now in its third day. However, they won't get paid until the government reopens. According to News3LV, the majority of TSA employees at Reid International earn between $20,000 and $60,000 a year, so working without even one paycheck will certainly affect them. During the last shutdown in 2018-2019, which lasted for 35 days, after a couple of weeks, TSA workers started calling in sick to take temp jobs to pay the rent. That was when the security checkpoint lines approached an hour's wait, when they would normally take five to ten minutes. Flyer beware.
Yelp has unveiled its list of the Top 100 Taco Spots of 2025. Te'Kila Lil Time Bar and Grill ranked number 34; it has two locations, one on W. Sahara near Jones, the other on S. Durango near Desert Inn. Chicali Tacos placed #76; serving Mexicali-style cuisine, it's located near S. Maryland Pkwy. and Serene. Aroma Latin American Cocina came in at #91; Aroma is a perennial winner, Yelp's number-one taco spot in 2023 and the best in Nevada in 2024 and chef-owner Steve Kestler was a James Beard Award finalist in 2024. Finally, Tacotarian, the vegetarian brand with several locations around the valley, took #96; you can read our own review here (we liked it).
Station Casinos will reopen the poker room at Green Valley Ranch "by the end of the year." Part of a $200 million remodel, the new room will return to its original location, with 16 tables, all new layouts and chairs, and an upgraded audio/visual package and will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the only 24/7 poker room in Henderson. The room closed with the property in March 2020 during the COVID shutdown and is just about the last of the pandemic closures to return from the dead; it was replaced with slot machines, which will be relocated around the casino floor.
The Los Angeles Rams are -9 favorites over the San Francisco 49ers in tonight's Thursday Night Football game. The total is 43.5.
Hawaiian Bros. Island Grill has opened its first Nevada location on W. Craig Road near Jones Boulevard. The chain has 68 branches in 12 states, from Oregon to Georgia, Arizona to Illinois (mostly in the Midwest and Texas). The brand is known for plate lunches ($12-$21) and wraps, with a somewhat limited menu of huli huli, Molokai, Honolulu, and Kilauea chicken, luau pig, and island salad; the plates come with white rice or vegetables and the one dessert is tropical Dole soft serve.
The world’s largest F1 Arcade will open Oct. 17 in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. The two-level 21,000-square-foot attraction offers a Formula One-simulator racing experience, with tickets starting at $26. Other F1-related games and devices are available, along with dining options. All ages are welcome, but kids must be at least seven years old to use the racing simulators
It came down to the wire again. The Las Vegas Aces not only played their second elimination game in the WNBA's post-season, but last night's contest went into overtime. It was a tough victory in Indianapolis, as the Fever lost their stars, guard Kelsey Mitchell to an injury and forward Aliyah Boston to foul trouble; their superstar Caitlyn Clark was also out for the season. Plus, the Fever were on a roll, winning their first playoff series since 2015. But our gals prevailed by a score of 107-98, outscoring Indiana 21 to 12 in OT. The Aces now face the Phoenix Mercury, who eliminated the Minnesota Lynx in Sunday's game. Game 1 of the championship series starts at five p.m. on Friday at Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay.
"Kings of Vegas" is a soon-to-be-released four-episode documentary about the 1990 UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball team, which was ranked number one at the start of the season -- and, it turned out, for very good reason. The team, coached by the controversial but brilliant Jerry Tarkanian, went undefeated in the regular season, then won every playoff game, beating Duke 103-73 in the national chamionship game; it remains the largest margin of victory in NCAA championship history. This team is also considered the greatest college basketball team of all time, but Vegas being Vegas, of course, they weren't the most beloved group of young players ever. A number of documentaries have been made about them over the ensuing years, but "Kings of Vegas" is the only one that includes all 13 players telling their own stories and features appearances by Snoop Dogg, Matt Barnes, Jimmy Kimmel, Chuck D, and other big names. It won the Audience Choice Award in the second annual Summer League Film Festival, which takes place during the Summer League NBA games in Las Vegas and is dedicated to stories about NBA stars past and present. "Kings of Vegas" will air sometime this fall. You can see a good trailer here.
