Question of the Day — 12 Jan 2021

In your opinion, do you think any buffets will open anytime soon? I know South Point is the only one currently open.

This is a question we've been receiving frequently of late. In fact, it's the lead topic of our latest YouTube video.

Our opinion? We doubt it.

In the video, Anthony Curtis says, "It's kind of going in the opposite direction," noting that the Wynn and Cosmopolitan buffets opened and closed since the casinos reopened in June, leaving, as you state in the question, only South Point's buffet operational.

Anthony goes on to explain that, when he was negotiating coupons for the 2021 Member Rewards Book over the past few months and had a chance to talk to a number of casino policy makers, he learned that buffets might be an endangered species. "I'm worried that they're going to take this opportunity to phase out buffets altogether."

Some buffets will return, he predicts. "There will always be buffets in Las Vegas. But," he cautions, "whereas there were forty to forty-five of them before the pandemic, we might be looking at ten to fifteen for quite some time to come."

For a discussion on the economics of buffets, which will be the main reason they don't return after the dark days of the pandemic have passed (and they will), you can read our last QoD to answer this question
