LVA Review

This restaurant was re-reviewed in the April 2011 LVA; some of the information contained in this review may no longer be accurate. If Capriotti’s Sandwich Shops have been serving up some of the best subs in Vegas for 15 years, why did it take us so long to make it a Local Corner? Because when the first store opened, we tried them and weren’t impressed (something seemed wrong about putting relish on an Italian sub). After we sampled other sandwiches and found out how good this place is, we were slightly deterred by the fact that it’s not a Las Vegas-only chain. Again, we shouldn’t have been. While there are 70 outlets nationwide, three-quarters of them are either in Las Vegas or in the Delaware (where it began) and eastern Pennsylvania area. So much for explanations. The reality is, these are fantastic subs and sandwiches, both hot and cold, including the best cheesesteaks in town. But as good as those are, Capriotti’s main claim to fame is the Bobby—a sub made with carved turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing that’s appeared in about 90% of Las Vegas’ best-sandwich surveys since it first showed up (Kerry Simon picked it as his favorite in an Esquire magazine survey of celebrity-chef faves). Prices run from $4.75 to $12.25 for a monster 20-incher that’s always an adventure to carry out of the place. According to its website, there are 28 Capriotti’s in Nevada, 25 of which are in Las Vegas and Henderson (there are two in Reno and one in Boulder City). That means you’ll find them all over town, but usually on the outskirts. Easiest from the Strip are the two listed above. The W. Sahara location is the Las Vegas original, located less than a mile west of the Sahara casino. Another that’s centrally located is at 4983 W. Flamingo, about three miles west of the Strip, just past Decatur. There’re also outlets in the food courts at Green Valley Ranch, Red Rock, and Aliante Station.
