LVA Review

This restaurant was reviewed in the March 2011 LVA; some of the information contained in the review may no longer be accurate. Herbs & Rye hasn’t been around for long, but this really is a locals kind of place, all the way down to the building the restaurant occupies. For many years, this was the location of the Venetian Italian restaurant. When the Venetian closed, it became the Slanted Clam, then a short-lived Mexican restaurant, and Herbs & Rye showed up about a year ago. Through it all, the interior hasn’t changed a whole lot; it’s still a dimly lit quiet place that harkens back to old Vegas. OK. So the building has tradition. What this recommendation is really about is the happy hour. We wrote about it a couple months ago and it’s actually been diminished a bit with a reduction in available items and some price increases, but it’s still very good. Seven days a week from 5 to 8 pm, then again from midnight till closing (usually 3 am), four steak dinners are half-price. Least expensive of them is an 8-ounce flat iron that’s listed at $23. Hence, during happy hour it’s $12.50. A 9-ounce filet is $15 after discount, a 12-ounce Kansas City strip is $12.50, and a 17-ounce bone-in rib eye is $14.50. These aren’t complete meals, but they come with a choice of one side dish, and they’re really good—mac & cheese, jalapeno creamed corn, mushrooms, garlic mashed, asparagus, or tater tots. Also offered on the discount are linguini & clams for $12.50 and two $10 appetizers. The filet is the best steak. Pick your side–mushrooms are strong—and you’re out for $15. If you want to live it up, add a salad wedge for $7 and a glass of red for $10. Now you’re at $35, but it’s a heck of a meal The one negative is drink prices. Herbs & Rye has an extensive cocktail program, but you’re talking about $9 a pop for the good ones. Remedy: Right next door is another Vegas institution, Shifty’s bar, where you can get draft Buds for a buck. Bingo!
