LVA Review

This restaurant was reviewed in the September 2004 LVA; some of the information contained in this review may no longer be accurate. Looking for a great sushi play? This is it. We've written about Makino before, but a related local-dining development has prompted us to make this restaurant a bona fide "Local Corner" recommendation. Makino has been Las Vegas' best all-you-can eat sushi buffet for a few years now, but it had competition. Specifically, a Henderson restaurant called Blue Wave was nearly as comprehensive and slightly less expensive. But Blue Wave has closed, leaving Makino all alone at the top. Makino has dozens of sushi choices in traditional pieces, along with cut and hand rolls. The selection includes all the good stuff—tuna, yellowtail, eel, and exotic combinations. Several non-sushi dishes include baked clams, shrimp with heads, seafood salads, soups, and desserts. The place is always teeming with customers, so food is replenished continuously and it's always fresh. Dinner is $27.95 and lunch is $18.95 ($1 more for each on weekends). As usual, the superior play is lunch (11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.); despite the $9 difference, the selection is almost identical. There's an interesting pricing schedule for kids under 12 years old: Lunch is $6.95 and dinner is $10.95 if they're taller than four feet. It's $4.95 and $5.95 if they're shorter and free if they're less than three feet. Makes sense.
