LVA Review

This restaurant was re-reviewed in the June 2011 LVA; some of the information contained in this review may no longer be accurate. The Paradise Grill has closed. That may be an odd way to begin a review of Mi Peru, but it’s the reason we’re running it now. Paradise Grill was the dingy Peruvian restaurant on the west side that was an earlier Local Corner because of its good ceviche. We’ll miss it, but we have a worthy replacement. Mi Peru, located on the far east side of town, is much fancier than Paradise and has a more diverse menu, with chicken, beef, and seafood the base for anticuchos (kebobs), saltados (meat sautéed with tomatoes and onions), and authentic soups, like aguadito con pollo, made with chicken, rice, and cilantro. The Peruvian spices are distinct and they come through loud and clear in this cuisine. Everything just mentioned is less than $15, and most dishes are under $10. Or you can get acquainted with these tastes via the $8.95 lunch specials, available Mon.-Thurs. from noon to 3 pm. Good stuff, but we go for the ceviche. The classic is the ceviche de pescado ($12.50), made with chunks of white fish and served with yams, onions, and corn. There are some variations (e.g., tiradito), but the classic is the best. A Peruvian Cristal or Cusquena beer goes well on the side for $5 apiece (Cristal is lighter). There’s also an interesting wine list with a good selection of South American product. Hours are 11 am to 9 pm daily (10 pm Thurs.-Sat.).
