LVA Review

This restaurant was reviewed in the June 2018 LVA; some of the information contained in this review may no longer be accurate.

When Second Street Grill opened at the Fremont in the early ’90s, it introduced to Las Vegas “Hawaiian fusion,” a hybrid cuisine that added pickled ginger, wasabi, sesame oil, oyster and Chinese-mustard sauces, papaya relish, kimchi, and the like to familiar American dishes. Twenty-five years later, little has changed. The room, the cooks, even the black tablecloths and faux-leather menus are the same as they were on opening night.

The prices are higher, but still in bargain territory for a fancy room. Appetizers start at $14 for mozzarella and tomatoes and go up to $21 for a unique escargot and scallops combo served on an escargot plate drenched in melted butter. Another good starter is the sashimi that comes with eight thick slices of fish for $15. Steaks are priced in the $30s, with chicken, duck, and fish selections for $25-$30. This is another throwback restaurant where the meals come with salads and sides included, which makes the entrée prices even more attractive. Second Street has always offered some type of steak special and on our visit they had two: a big T-bone with salad, baked potato, sautéed mushrooms, and garlic green beans for $25 and a filet & lobster tail with a salad, baker, and shrooms for $39.

It’s not quite like the original porterhouse special that was a long-time Top Ten selection at, get this, $8.95, but both of the current specials stack up well in today’s market. Our bill for the two specials, two appetizers, and a beer came to $110 and there was food to go. This is an excellent play for a couple wanting a special meal at a good price.

The Fremont doesn’t have a parking garage, but valet parking is free (plus tip). The other play is to park in the big red Fremont Street garage, then get your ticket validated at the B Connected players club booth.
