To me, being patriotic isn't about waving a flag. It's about not needing a tragic/spectacular event to prod us into expressing, not just love of country, which is trivial, but love of our fellow man.
We were there, preparing to fly home, on 9/11/2001. Watched the planes fly into the buildings as we packed up. Called Delta who said our flight was still leaving, so we drove out and turned in our rental car. After giving us our receipt, the guy told us the airport was now closed. We had no choice but to take the rental car bus to the airport, then find a bus to take us back to the hotel (NY-NY). They were kind enough to check us back in to our same room for the night. We were able to get a room at the Excalibur after that. We ended up staying 5 extra nights before we finally caught a flight back to Alabama. Vegas was a whole different place which we will never forget. All the marquees said, "GOD BLESS AMERICA", they brought big screen TVs into the casinos so we could keep up with what was happening, and we had pauses where everyone went outside and sang patriotic songs together (including dealers and waitresses). We will never forget it.
