During the initial blizzard of free play--this was sometime around 2003--a fairly high-up Station Casinos exec told me that they loved to give out free play because players valued it at face value but the truth was, Stations recovered fully 95% of it! In other words, they measured play results after people downloaded free play--and the vast majority of customers just kept banging away, even after an initial healthy win, until the credits hit zero--even though they could have simply cashed out at some point. This makes me wonder why Vegas casinos are so %^%#$% stingy with free play these days, especially bounceback. They get back almost all of it!
My personal experience and method has ALWAYS been to run the free play through the best machine available ONCE and then cash out, regardless of results. I often choose a lower-volatility game even if it's not nominally the best-paying game; I'm willing to get a theoretical $48 instead of $49 for my $50 FP but HATE to get, say, $20 for it, which can happen if you play something like DB or deuces. Amusingly, despite this hyper-conservative approach, I've hit five royals lifetime while laundering free play.

Coincidentally, I went to MGM Grand Detroit yesterday to pick up my $95 in freeplay and ended up with about $75 in credits. I continued to play and amazingly hit for $1750 without ever putting in more than my original $1.
