Of course, Kevin, that’s why they call it gambling, although in today’s inflationary environment, $200 or $300 as a session bankroll is too low. $500 minimum, and more like a $1,000, if you want the ability to survive during a day on reasonable table game play.

Sadly, that is about all that the casinos have left for serious players. Not just Caesars Entertainment but virtually all casinos.

The only answer I have found: Don’t gamble on these bad games. There are healthier places to be than a casino.

Jean, always enjoy your columns & appreciate your advice. I have to concur with your assessment of the v.p. inventory at Tropicana. It never has been a good casino for video poker play and, even now, under the Caesars Corp. umbrella it hasn’t improved. I was in Atlantic City this past Mon. to Thurs. to take advantage of the Tier Credit Multiplier promotion & stayed at Harrah’s as they currently have the largest inventory of full-pay games of all the Caesars A.C. properties.

I visited the Borgata on Wednesday afternoon & was very surprised to see they had 6 crap tables open; 4 at $10 minimum & 2 at $25. The $10 tables were all nearly full. Much to my disappointment I discovered that the Borgata no longer allows the use of free play on “any” video poker machines; nor can you redeem MGM Reward points at v.p. machines. It seems this is becoming a trend in Atlantic City. The new owners of Bally’s removed all full pay v.p. (except for three, 3-play machines in High Limit with 9/6 JoB & 8/5 BP); and Caesars Atlantic City restricts the use of free play on some of its full pay games.

I wonder just how many people realize, with $15 minimum bets, you’re putting well over $1000 in action per hour. And yeah, maybe your theoretical loss is “only” $20 or $30 an hour, but in a bad session, you can easily lose five or ten times that. And for most people, myself included, the “fun” part of gambling vanishes at that point.

I mean, suppose you went to a movie and didn’t know what the ticket cost until after the show was over, and you found out that your credit card had been charged $175? Was that fun? Would you go back?

As you found, unfortunately, CET has been systematically removing most of the video poker machines. It’s quite distressing, it’s almost as if they do not want us as patrons!
