Thanks, Jean, for sharing the news of hitting royals and winning the cruise. I never experienced a big win; so I am living vicariously through you and hoping that one day a major jackpot will happen for me. I read the Frugal Gambler years ago and, as a low-roller, I have been enjoying free hotel rooms, free slot play, free airport shuttle transportation, some meals and other offers. Without those perks, I might have given up on casinos years ago. But I do enjoy the slots and I love reading all of your blog posts. So in spite of any negative comments you may receive, I hope you keep sharing both the good and the bad of yours and Brad's casino experiences. It isn't bragging when you share a win -- it's sharing good news with online friends!

Great to hear about your hit on the 100 play and your cruise win! I had an awful dry spell myself that lasted over a year. Over 250k hands without a royal! Broke the jinx last year.

Enjoy the cruise! We just returned from a "free" cruise to Alaska that Chris received from Harrahs. The cruise was free but the excursions and dining extras etc. added up! Have a great week! Now that we're back I need to catch up on reading your blog.

The thing about 100-play is that usually one royal isn't enough to pull you back into the black. After all--it's only eight bets! ($125/hand, $1000/royal, at .25 stakes)
You usually have to get dealt something good, which can take a while...I used to play .05 Triple Double 100 Play at a place that featured 0.66 cashback on certain days--making it a positive play, even without considering mailers. But at $25/hand, and given the inherent nature of the game, the swings were massive. I did get bailed out of a losing session by getting dealt 44442 for $10,000. But I threw in the towel after that as I had been down over $6000 when that hand hit--I just couldn't handle the swings. So the fact that you are playing at five times those stakes boggles the mind--if you are playing 8/5 BP, you're losing a little over $1/hand--which can equate to a bloodbath if you play for several hours. What I want to know is, how could you be getting enough benefits to compensate? Cashback and bounceback would never be enough to close the gap between 99.2% and 100%, so was it the drawing promo that you counted on to make up the lost EV? And if so, how could you accurately estimate its value?
I'd hate to think that the Queen was playing high stakes at -EV...sort of like Shoeless Joe Jackson...

Congratulations on your on your win. It had to be at bonus poker at a casino that had a good promotion on Thursday which I also played at but on $1 JOB as there were no seats available at the 10 play $.25 JOB. What surprised me though is that you were playing at a disadvantage even taking the great promo into consideration.Perhaps you were giving a value to the mailer as well as maintaining a higher level slot card? Could be a good topic for your next book :):):)

"Frugal Vegas"? This entry is not even close to the subject. Instead, it's another post containing more "look at me, I'm a high roller" than advice to or stories about the everyday visitor to Las Vegas or the typical local player. Hitting a royal or two is great news which any VP player likes to hear about but qualifying it to include the high stakes at which you play AND tossing in the fact you have an incredibly high number of contest entries "forcing" you to be bored is purely bragging...again. It seems that years back, your subject matter was in tune with the masses and geared toward them. Not so much now and it's clear you've lost touch with what "Frugal Vegas" has brought to readership.
