The EC check cashing promotion is a good one. You need to give them some good play though. If you hit and run, they will not let you do the promo again-ever. Also, I think they will only let you do it once per year.

The other feature that has disappeared from December in Vegas (apparently) is the lull between Christmas and New Year’s. In the past, I’ve found very low room rates from the 25th through the 29th. No mas! I used to visit regularly and decompress for a few days after suffering through Xmas with Drunk Uncle Johnny et al.

It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway, that Vegas on New Year’s Eve is a horrible ripoff and a cesspool of insanity. It’s like being in a food riot in Bangladesh. And you pay $1500 to stay for the holiday weekend (if you book far in advance; otherwise, $2500).

I have never understood the rationale for hotel/casinos to jack up their rates every time there’s a “special event” in town, even if they’re nowhere near those events. It’s seeming more and more like a pretext to me. But of course…the lemmings keep flooding in. There seems to be no real price resistance in the Vegas tourist market.
