ZorkFest Frugal Fee Deadline Extended

Did you look at the ZorkFest website earlier and knew this travel and gambling conference had a lot of interesting events but you just couldn’t organize your schedule to take advantage of the frugal early-bird registration I recommended?  Well, you last-minute planners are in luck; the deadline has been extended to April 30!

And if you are reading this, you are also lucky that you can get the best event and combo discount deals by using these LVA codes:

  1. Zorklva – $10 off a regular ZorkFest Conference ticket
  2. Zorkdinnerlva – $20 off the ZorkFest VIP dinner! (remember, VIP “High Roller” ticket INCLUDES DINNER)
  3. Zorklvaroller – $25 off! ZorkFest VIP “High Roller” ticket which includes VIP dinner, breakfast, t-shirt, and VIP reserved seats at the podcaster event
  4. Zorkcraps – discount for charity craps tournament

(Depending on your schedule and interests, you can register for individual events – like the VIP dinner or the craps tournament or the Award Travel Bootcamp – without purchasing the Conference ticket.)

Zorkfest is also running an exclusive contest for LVA members:

ZorkFest will provide three (3) Friday VIP dinner tickets to raffle off for LVA members. Potential winners will be any LVA member who buys a Zorkfest conference ticket (with the LVA code). Those three winners will sit with Anthony Curtis or Jean and Brad Scott at dinner Friday night. If the winner of the LVA contest for dinner already has purchased a dinner (or High-Roller ticket which includes dinner) they will get a $100 Treasure Island Casino Chip, at registration.

So, check out the ZorkFest website and see what all will be offered, no matter what your interests are:  a crap tournament, smart casino gambling, travel bargains, credit card awards, podcasts.  It looks to be a cornucopia of money-saving information!

Brad and I hope to see a lot of our frugal friends!

Gambling Taxes

A last-minute response to some of the tax questions gamblers have sent me.  Almost all of them required more than a simple one-sentence answer.  Tax issues are always complex and when you combine them with gambling issues they become doubly complicated.  So many of the needed details in the IRS publications are murky or missing, so the answers often depend on your personal financial circumstances.

If you are panicking because you haven’t filed your return for 2017 and the deadline is this coming Tuesday, the current e-book edition of Tax Help for Gamblers can be downloaded immediately at this website.  Most gambling tax issues are covered, no matter what game you play, and many of the common tax questions are answered there.  If your situation is so complicated that you are still confused, then I suggest you file for an extension and then see a professional tax preparer who is knowledgeable about gambling issues.

If you have questions about how the new tax changes will affect your filing of your 2018 returns, help is on the way as there will be a new updated edition of my tax book later in the year.  In the meantime, I have discussed in some of my recent blogs some of those changes that affect gamblers specifically and talked about some of the techniques that players are using to mitigate their negative effects.  One reader suggested using multi-line lower-denomination games instead of higher-level single-lines to avoid W-2Gs.  That is a great idea but often one that is not an option because there are no games readily available with the same good pay tables at every level, and it really doesn’t solve anything since the IRS expects you to pay taxes on your wins whether you get any paperwork or not.   Another reader suggested that I talk about using the session method for this purpose.  That might be a good way but, until the IRS changes the way it looks at gambler returns, you might not want to face the hassle of explaining your figures in an audit.

I discussed taxes on a recent “House of Cards” radio show, Episode 53

And unrelated to taxes, you can read a recent interview I gave about casino freebies.  I wasn’t given the opportunity to vet or edit it – so remember the author bears full responsibility for all the material there.

More April Casino News and Promos

PALMS

More info about their April promotions I talked about in my last blog.

Tuesdays double promo has a welcome option. If you earn 300 points, you can choose either the free movie ticket or car wash.  But if you earn 600 points, you will see two places to touch on the kiosk screen and two vouchers will spit out.  Each voucher gives you a choice between a free movie ticket or a free car wash.  So, you can either get one of each or two of the same, i.e., 2 movie tickets.

Other details about the Thursday gas gift card promotion: Different than in previous versions before the Palms became a Stations property, there is no carry-over provision.  You can only get gas cards for the points you earn that same day. The gift card requirements are for base points.  However, you do not have to redeem the points so they remain in your point bank to use for cash, free play, or comps.

ELLIS ISLAND

Ellis Island has just released some details about their casino-wide anniversary party Saturday, April 14, celebrating “50 Years of Ellis.”  The festivities will include giveaways on the casino floor and in the karaoke lounge, drink specials in the bars and dinner specials in the restaurant, including the original bowl of chili and ham sandwich combo available back in 1968.  Their brewery will release a 50th Anniversary Golden Lager April 2 to commemorate the milestone.  A collector’s edition anniversary $5 chip will also be available at their gaming tables throughout the remainder of 2018.

Click here for a short but interesting video about the history of this family business.

Interesting Read

Think the lottery is never an advantage play?  Read this article.  It’s long but was fascinating to me for many reasons, the main one that reinforces my belief that successful gambling is never easy.  It takes intense effort.  Fun but work!

Gallows Humor

I regularly shop at the 99-Cent store – probably not shocking information to anyone who knows me at all.  The other day I nearly got run over in the parking lot of one of these stores.  Brad and I decided that if that ever happened it wouldn’t be a happy event, of course, but it might be an “appropriate” way for me to exit this planet.

April Casino News and Promos

I am reading that the casino business in Vegas is booming, but my local April mailers are so extra heavy with promotions that it makes me wonder.  However, I’m not complaining – I love it when the casinos are stepping up their marketing efforts!

Although I mainly look for gambling-specific promotions, like multiple-point days, to write about, I know most players are also interested in other promotional categories, especially food offers.  Obviously if you can save money on meals when you are in a casino, then you will have more money to add or keep in your gambling bankroll. This month I know about three play-for-a-buffet promos.

SOUTH POINT

From a press release:  South Point Casino Club members have the chance to earn a lunch or dinner voucher for the Garden Buffet every Monday through Thursday throughout April. To earn one lunch buffet, slot machine players must earn 300 same day base slot points between 3 a.m. and 1 p.m. Club members can receive a dinner buffet voucher by earning 600 same day base slot points before 8 p.m. To receive the earned buffet vouchers, Club members must present an ID and swipe their Casino Club card at any kiosk to verify their points by 2 p.m. for a lunch buffet and by 9 p.m. for a dinner buffet. Players must then redeem their lunch and/or dinner tickets at any Casino Club kiosk between 7 a.m. and midnight to receive their Garden Buffet coupons. All players must be 21 years of age or older and can only be awarded one lunch or dinner buffet per day per player, based on same day play points. The Garden Buffet vouchers are valid Monday through Thursday only and expire Thursday, May 3.

SILVERTON

Tuesdays in April you can earn either (but not both) a free lunch buffet by earning 50 points or a free dinner buffet for 100 points.  This is one of our favorite value-priced buffets.  And the promotion has one extra feature.  You can earn and print out the coupon at the kiosk on Tuesday and it is good through Thursday of that same week.

RAMPART

Rampart has an every-day on-going earn-and-redeem (you don’t keep the points to use for other purposes as you do in a simple earn promo) buffet offer. They also offer a similar spa promo.

——

PALMS

I don’t always give you all the details of every promotion I mention here since you can go to the casino website where these are usually well covered, including requirements, limits, and restrictions.  I constantly remind you to read all the fine print!  However, there is one casino I talk about – the Palms – that has not yet followed its new “mother” (Stations Casinos) by covering their promotions on their website.  So, I will try to be more detailed here so that those who do not get the regular monthly mailer will have enough info to at least have a general idea about their promotions, many which out-of-towners as well as locals might find attractive.

First, I need to mention that the popular earn-a-buffet promotion that they ran since their new A.Y.C.E buffet opened is no longer in effect.  I am assuming that they think their frugal introduction offer has produced a healthy number of fans who will continue to be customers at the regular price.  Most people I talk to think this is a high-value choice for a reasonable cost.  And there have been some changes that have improved the overall experience.  Even Brad – who wasn’t thrilled at first – likes to go there.  And the lunchtime sliders I panned earlier now have the soft buns I like better.  We both like the navy bean soup and light-style cornbread, and our favorite desert is the fudgy sugar-free brownie topped by vanilla sugar-free gelato.  Yummmmm!

Although the buffet offer is gone, they have several other promotions this month. A couple small ones are kiosk games on Mondays and Fridays that you can play after earning 5 base points.  I haven’t done these very often, but in my experience and talking with others who have done these at other Station properties, the prizes are fairly small and probably not worth a special trip for many players.  But if you are on property those days anyway, it is a small added bonus.

The popular promotions to earn movie tickets and car washes have been combined in April into one day – Tuesdays.  Earn 300 points for one or 600 points for both.  You keep the points. Also, the Palms continues to participate with the other Station properties in the Wheel of Fortune bonus, where each individual property jackpot starts at 10K and must hit by 20K.

The biggest promo that may be of interest to many players is earning Chevron gift cards on Thursdays in April.  You can find the complete rules and schedule at the Rewards Center, but there are many levels.  You can earn a $5 gift card by earning 300 slot or 1500 VP points.  If you earn enough points for all 5 levels (that’s 19,500 for slots; 57,000 for VP), you will have earned $190 of those gas gift cards – and you still keep the points for free play, cash, and comps.

Miscellaneous Promos

Not interested in long gambling sessions or no interest in gambling at all?  Casinos these days try to offer free or low-cost activities to bring in customers who will spend money at their property outside of the gaming action.

Silverton offers free admission to “Pub Trivia” on Wednesday nights; and with your players card, on Thursday evenings you can enjoy a classic rock band show.  You can stop by a craft show there on April 1, a garage sale on April 7, and a weekly farmers market on Sundays.  On Tuesdays you can enter two slot tournaments, free with your players card.

Rampart Casino is offering free table game lessons every Saturday at 10 a.m.  At South Point there are free show options, and many events in their Arena are open for free to the public.

If you are age 50+, almost all local casinos have freebies and discounts for you on their designated “senior day.”

Scouring local casino websites will help you discover promotions for all type of activities – gambling and otherwise – many which may surprise you, especially if you don’t get their  mailers.  And there is one resource that I forgot to put on my list I gave last week here in my blog, one that is a must-read for those always on the hunt for all kinds of good promotions.  Go to the weekly Vegas Values where every Sunday Scot Krause gives you a report on the best current casino deals and you can also check on-going promotions.

My Basic Resource List

Off and on I mention good resources for gamblers and Las Vegas casino visitors, but I am still getting a lot of questions from readers that the answers could be found by anyone in the same resources I use.  So, I thought it might be useful if I compiled a list of the resources that I check frequently to find helpful up-to-date information. Of course, you already know you need to regularly check individual casino websites!

This list is not in any order of importance and not all-inclusive by any means, and I welcome input in the “Comments” about other resources readers find valuable.

vpFREE – [email protected] – Valuable forum for video poker players where I pick up little gems of money-making and money-saving information.

vpFREE2 – This free site not only has an extensive database base where you can find the best VP, but information on every casino in the US. This includes host lists and players club details that will help you figure those valuable extra benefits.

Vegas4LocalsOne of the best places to find free and/or inexpensive things to do in Vegas, with tons of information for frugal locals and visitors alike.

Seven Stars Insider –   From this website, you can subscribe for a free monthly newsletter and read former issues. Originally designed exclusively for Seven Stars cardholders, I find that there are plenty of new and valuable details here for any player who is trying to squeeze more value from their play at a Caesars property.

Mark’s Las VegasThis has unique coverage with information you might not readily find elsewhere, including a great “Players Club Comps and Tier Advancement Cheat Sheet” that shows how you can spend/buy your way up to a higher tier in many casinos! Mark also covers social gaming programs.

https://wizardofodds.com/ – I go to the Wizard for the math of anything in a casino.

https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/ – I’ve saved the best for last. Yep, that’s the website here where my blog lives. But I am wondering if you have explored this site since it was revamped some months ago and where there are just so many interesting and helpful pages.  Start out by checking the “Top Links” on the homepage.  “Bonus Point Days” will give you the schedule for the month where you can find extra benefits for your play.  And then there is the list of blogs (besides this one!) and I can’t emphasize enough how valuable they can be in helping you become a more successful gambler and also enjoy your time more frugally in Las Vegas.  Check the tabs at the top of the homepage for tons more information.

What other resources do you check regularly?

Vegas News Briefs

I would like to encourage my readers to read the “Comments” that appear after I post a blog.  They often contain valuable information on promotions and other money-saving techniques, some that is news to me and perhaps also to many of you. For example, one of the comments on my last blog gave good details about a shuttle available for travel between Las Vegas and Laughlin.  Sometimes a spirited discussion will ensue among the commenters, and I sometimes answer questions that have come up from readers.  This sharing of helpful casino information reminds me of the phrase “It takes a village….”

It is easy to keep up without going back and forth between blogs and scrolling to the bottom of each one for possible comments.  When you are on my blog page, look for the section titled “Recent Comments” on the right side of the page and you can click on those you would like to read.   Not everyone reads my blogs or comments on them the day I post them.  But that list on the right side of the blog page will keep you up to date on current comments and those that may appear later.  (Other reasons to check on the right side of my blog page:  you can “Subscribe” so you will get an e-mail when I post a new blog, and you can also search in the “Archives” and find every Frugal Fridays and Frugal Vegas blog I have ever posted – from way back in April 2000!)

BRIEFS

The usual free slot tournament South Point runs on senior Mondays will not be held on Monday, March 19.  Also remember the all-day Monday $4 movie promo for seniors is “not valid on holidays or special events.”

Hooters Casino Hotel has opened the world’s largest Steak’n Shake location – and with a bar and slot machines to boot.  We old-time Midwesterners would never have believed those would ever be added to their juicy hamburgers or thick milkshakes!

Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino is the latest casino company to offer a room discount to active and veteran military, police, fire fighters, teachers, and other service personnel.  Also, their new players club will give all active and retired members of the United States Military Gold Tier status, with extra benefits.  As with all casinos and players clubs, you will need to check their websites for specific requirements to get extra benefits, and more importantly, you will need to check the limitations.  Many of these special programs have tons of fine print to wade through!

THE ZORKFEST

My March 4 blog gave you many of the details about this fun feast of frugal information to help you save money on travel expenses and casino visits.  (I like alliteration!)

I also gave you the link to complete details of the Zorkfest event which is sponsored by TravelZork, a website covering airlines, hotels, casinos, Vegas, and loyalty programs.  There you will find the pictures, bios, and subject material of the many experts who will be speaking, and details of event schedules and registration fees.

However, I am writing about it again because the deadline to take advantage of the lowest registration fee is coming up fast – in fact it is this coming Tuesday, March 20.  You will be able to register later, of course, but the cost will be higher.  And you know me – I like to be sure my readers are aware of the most frugal options!  I truly believe that many – even most – attendees will learn a few new frugal techniques that will save them more money in the future than they invest in the registration fees.  (And when you register, be sure to add the code zorklva for extra discounts!)

The seminar speakers are experts in a variety of travel and casino fields, and more subjects have been added to the wide range that were initially listed.  Here are some of them:

-Learn the Best Travel Award Redemptions

-Expert Tips to Book Travel and Credit Card Strategies

-Casino Comps, VIP Status and Offers

-Miles & Points – Tips and Tricks

-Family Travel and Cruise Promotions

As I said in the earlier blog, Brad and I will be there most of the time during this event, both before and after I speak, and we look forward to meeting new and long-time fellow frugalites.

March Casino News and Promos

Watch for special promos during college basketball’s March Madness days.  And then there are always lots of St. Patrick’s Day menu specials; Brad and I will be looking for good corned beef and cabbage meals!

Again, I need to remind everyone that you should not depend solely on a promotion blog from me the first of each month to figure out where you should play that month.  I don’t always have complete information until I have actually visited a particular casino, and I stumble on news that I want to share in blogs all month long, not just early in the month.  For a long time I have been encouraging players to check gambling forum discussions and data bases as well as individual casino websites, and I have listed various helpful resources.  No one person or website can take the place of intensive and wide-ranging research on your own to keep up these days.  (One frugal hint:  If you don’t want to miss one of my irregularly-posted blog entries, it’s easy to “Subscribe” on the right side of any of my blog pages and you will get an e-mail telling you when a new one is up.)

One other note:  I don’t write just about the casinos we personally visit.  However, I do share news of other casinos  that I feel will be helpful to others.

RAMPART CASINO

Here are some details from a press release about their newly-revamped senior program:

Go to their website for details of many other promotions:  multiple-point days, an Earn & Spa voucher, Earn & Redeem buffets 7 days a week and other food specials.

WESTGATE LAS VEGAS

On March 1, they introduced a new players club, named WOW.

VP details:  $10 coin-in = 1 point and 100 points = $1 in free play or comps (0.10%)

See other details at their website under “Casino.”  Be sure to click on two links given there for more complete information: “See Official Rules” and “Click Here for Benefits.”

PALMS

More formerly closed sections are being opened up and machines are being moved around big-time.  Some MIA machines are back.  vpFREE2 is trying to keep up but you must use your best scouting skills each and every day in this very fluid major remodeling situation.

One warning if you want to have a good selection of breakfast items at the buffet.  Although you get the lower breakfast price up until 11 a.m., they start the change-over to lunch selections around 10:30 and you have to be quick to find your favorite breakfast items before they disappear.

BAD NEWS CONTINUES

Seems like Caesars and MGM are in a contest to see which one can make their customers hate them more.  Both have recently raised parking and resort fees.   If you haven’t checked recently, do so you won’t be blindsided by new changes.

A Vegas Frugal and Fun Travel Festival

Many of you are probably already familiar with the TravelZork website as a resource for tons of frugal hints to save you money on travel – covering airlines, hotels, casinos, Vegas, and loyalty programs.  Now they are sponsoring a “travel festival” in May where you can immerse yourself in 3 days of travel frugality at the ZorkFest at Treasure Island in Las Vegas.  Brad and I are happy to announce that we have been included in the group of experts who will be sharing their practical money-saving information for all aspects of travel.

For complete information about this fun and informative event go to ZorkFest. There you can scroll down and find schedules, pictures and bios of the speakers, preliminary session subjects, host hotel rates, and registration details.  Of course, I want to tell you about all the ways you can reduce the cost of this educational and entertaining event – talking about how to get more bang for your buck is what I do!

First, remember this valuable code:  zorklva.  This will give you discounts for many parts of the registration fees.  And second, remember this still-wise cliché – the early bird gets the worm.  The Super Early Discount rate available if you register before March 20, coupled with the LVA code, will be the best bargain.  But there are other discounts for add-ons and combo offers.

Then there are special LVA promotions. Use the code zorklvaroller for $25 off the High-Roller ticket, offer good until April 30.    And here is one Brad and I are excited about because we love to chat with our fans:

ZorkFest will provide three (3) Friday VIP dinner tickets to raffle off for LVA members. Potential winners will be any LVA member who buys a Zorkfest conference ticket (with the LVA code). Those three winners will sit with Anthony Curtis or Jean and Brad Scott at dinner Friday night.  If the winner of the LVA contest for dinner already has purchased a dinner (or High-Roller ticket which includes dinner) they will get a $100 Treasure Island Casino chip, at registration.  Those who purchase the dinner (or High Roller Ticket which includes dinner) will also get a chance to sit with AC or Jean and Brad Scott, on a first- come- first basis.

I am really enthusiastic about this event because it covers such a large range of subjects of interest to people who work at being thrifty.  Of course, my niche is frugal gambling, but we spent a lot of time over the years making our travel budget smaller – think of those many airplane bumps we chased –  so we would have a bigger bankroll when we got to the casino.   And we are really looking forward to chatting with many of our frugal readers, some we have met in person in the past but many have wished for such an opportunity as this May event will bring.  Hope to see you there!

Last-minute February New and Changed Info

Here’s a President’s Day freebie for all you outdoor lovers that don’t make casino holiday multiple points a priority in your life – and believe it or not, this describes not only many local residents but more out-of-town visitors than you might guess.  On Monday, February 19, no entrance fees will be charged to visit Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.  This is an important date in that it will be the last day before a new schedule of fees kicks in on Tuesday, February 20, one that will significantly raise, even more than double, your cost, depending on how you plan to enter.  Check their website for details.  https://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/

The Palms

Remember how I told you in my blog early in the month how you could double-dip at the Palms by using the same points for two promotions for certain days.  At the time I knew the casino was aware of this “problem” – for them but not for the customer!  😊  Via the grapevine I heard they were trying to close this loophole so beloved by all of us players.  Well, they kinda did a few days ago by making a “rule” for the players club employees that they could not issue gift cards AND free buffet vouchers using the same earned points.  However, many customers just went the club desk to get these at different times and there was no guidance to the employees on how to check whether the proper points had been earned.

I have talked to one casino employee who wasn’t sure how this was going to play out the rest of February with two promotions still running on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  You can try to double-dip but I don’t guarantee your success.  However, I was told the casino was going to change/adjust promotion days in March so this would definitely no longer be a player option. ☹

South Point

This is probably not a new promotion but is one that just came to my attention.  South Point movie theaters are offering $4 movies for those 50+, not just on Monday senior day, but also on Wednesdays.  This price is good for all showings on those days, except there is an additional fee for 3D and XD.  You must show a South Point players card and ID.

Another discount day, for all ages, is Tuesday, with an all-day admission price of $5.25, with the same upcharges as just mentioned above.  (This promotion is available company-wide for Cinemark theaters.)  Also note that Tuesday Openings do not have this discount.

Inspirational Advice

“What helps luck is a habit of watching for opportunities, of having a patient, but restless mind, of sacrificing one’s ease or vanity, of uniting a love of details to foresight, and of passing through hard times bravely and cheerfully.” – Charles Victor Cherbuliez, a 19th-century French novelist.
