DECEMBER VEGAS PROMOTIONS

This will be an abbreviated report.  I hate when a new month starts just after a weekend, especially a holiday weekend.  Mailers are late – casino websites are not updated yet.  So it’s hard to get current information to you in a timely manner.  Below is what I have been able to find out, but I would suggest that in the next day or so you check the websites of casinos where you play or might want to play.  Maybe the casino personnel in charge of getting information to customers will finally decide when they want to increase their business in December!    (Scot Krause is having the same problem in trying to update his Players Club Bonus Point list.  So keep checking back there – http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/greatdeals-slotpromotions.cfm.)

A Thanksgiving Gambling Refrain

I am thankful for the early literary pioneers in skilled gambling.  They gave me the idea that this was even possible and provided some basic resources to start on this amazing journey.

I am thankful that there are still some casinos that don’t consider video poker players the enemy.  They understand that almost all of them are not a danger to their bottom line.  And for the few players that are, they often bring along spouses, relatives, and friends who will more than make up the difference.

I am thankful that casino buffets are offering more healthy choices. Continue reading

Getting to Know the Greenbacks

0822141646a (2)

Have you seen Buck and Winnie Greenback at Harrah’s Las Vegas – at least the statue of them in the background of this photo?  I have noticed the Greenback statues for years , always smiled at the over-the-top sterotype of the Vegas tourist,  but I never really gave them much thought.  However, recently I saw this real live couple whom Harrah’s has hired to give visitors an amusing photo opportunity.   They are such an unbelievably double for the statues and so charming that I forgot that I wasn’t a tourist anymore and posed for a cheesy photo.

I wanted to learn more details about this quirky Vegas scene and did a  Google search.  However,  that revealed limited information.  Maybe some of you will be more successful.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS…STAYS ON MY WAISTLINE

For 30 years I’ve been eating in Vegas casino restaurants, first as a frequent visitor and then, the last 14 years, as a resident. Although I’ve always been very health-conscious, regularly exercising and watching my diet, I’ve been losing what might be called the Buffet War. This war has not been a series of dramatic battles, but a slow chipping away of my defenses, about one pound managing to slip through each year.

Now, at age 75, I am pre-diabetic – and determined to not go over that line into serious health problems. Could I find enough healthy food choices to still regularly eat in casino restaurants? Or did I have to throw away most of those comps Brad and I get every month?

I am happy to report Continue reading

Veterans Day Promotions

In my last blog, I gave some resource suggestions:  Many casinos offer free or discounted meals for active and retired service members on Veterans Day, November 11. Check casino Web sites and newspaper ads closer to the date. And for non-casino discounts for active and retired service members on food and many other purchases, both for Veterans Day and all year long, check out this valuable Web site – http://militarybenefits.info/.

Today I want to give you one more good resource. Continue reading

Gambling Humor – The Perfect Gift

Contrary to common belief, Brad and I are not avid collectors of all things gambling. It’s true that we have a garage full of gambling-related merchandise, but that’s just free stuff we’ve received from casinos over the decades. And sure, we have an antique Golden Nugget “Golden Doll” slot machine in our condo, but to us, it’s just a beautiful objet d’art that we admire. And I’ll admit that I still get a kick out of seeing the expression on the face of visitors when they observe the money embedded in the clear-acrylic toilet seat in our guest bathroom.

But other than those few examples, you’d hardly know we’ve ever stepped foot inside a casino by looking at our belongings — except, lately, for the gambling-cartoon calendar on our coffee table.

My publisher, Huntington Press, brought out this 2015 calendar last month and Continue reading

Last-minute News and a Freebie

Ellis Island

Ellis Island is changing out their card readers (and not a year too soon) so your old cards no longer will work. If lines are long at the slot club, sometimes there is another desk open (a little ways past the pizza place) that can issue new cards.  Perhaps in related news, the bank of VP machines near the slot club, the ones that still had NSUD, are shut down. Trip Report – Harrah’s Cherokee – Part 2

Continuing the report on our Harrah’s Cherokee visit in early October. (You can read Part 1 at https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/frugal-vegas/?p=3670 .)

Since we were staying at Harrah’s Cherokee on a weekend, Angela and Steve enjoyed having a wide choice of venues to watch the games – bars, lounges, and in the Diamond/Seven Star lounge – where they could also chow down on party food.   They entered one football contest and much to their surprise won the “grand” prize – a canopy tent.  Good thing they were going home in their truck.  The casino also offered some unexpected fun non-gambling entertainment:  a Sunday morning jazz session in Starbucks and a cornhole game set up right on the gambling floor.  (Bet you didn’t know that I’m pretty good at that game IF I have some practice time before Steve challenges me!)

Some additional information for Seven Star players: Continue reading

Trip Report – Harrah’s Cherokee – Part 1

It was a wonderful out-of-town trip for Brad and me! First, a flight to Atlanta to visit family and see Asher, our new great-grandbaby in Columbus, GA, and then a drive north to the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina.  We had hoped we could see some beautiful fall foliage, but this first weekend in October was just a week or two early for prime viewing of the color changes.  However, we drank in the beauty of the green forested mountains we miss in the desert of Las Vegas.

We had the luxury of private drivers, daughter Angela and her hubby Steve, who were able to get off work and enjoy with us our 7-Star visit to Harrah’s Cherokee.  Continue reading
