Let’s Get Back on Track

My last blog entry (https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/frugal-vegas/?p=3436) generated a record number of comments. Now I really love it when a subject produces a good discussion with helpful information.  However, sometimes a thread goes off the track and quickly degenerates into personal arguments that upset – or at least bore the majority of readers.  I am always willing to allow, even encourage, a diversity of opinion, but the conversation must stay polite and not include personal attacks.  You can disagree strongly with someone’s ideas but you can’t call them insulting names.

Comments must also not ramble too far off the original subject. Continue reading

A Vegas Love Story – How It All Began

It was 30 years ago, on a windy March day in 1984, that a man and a woman arrived in Las Vegas on a plane from Indianapolis, Indiana.  It was their first vacation together, and it was only natural that they chose Las Vegas.  After all they had met and fallen in love while gambling together at Tonk games at the local Moose Lodge.  (The man would always laugh and say he had won the lady in a card game; the lady would explain that he had only won her heart.)

The couple had saved for this vacation, but they looked for the most inexpensive travel arrangements they could find – so they would have more left for gambling. Continue reading

Skillful Slots?

I don’t write about slot machines much since I rarely play them, instead sticking to video poker.  However, I recently read an excellent article by John Grochowski on the Web site CasinoTimesCity, http://scoblete.casinocitytimes.com/.     “Slot Machines Where Skill Counts” gave some interesting information for slot players and here are some excerpts:

“A tiny percentage of slots incorporate elements of skill. In International Game Technology’s Reel Edge games — Centipede, Blood Life Legends, and Tully’s Treasure Hunt — along with GTECH’s Zuma and Bejeweled, a skilled player will receive larger average returns on the bonus events than an unskilled player.”

But then he discusses a group of what I call “fooler slots.” Continue reading

When to Walk

Here is an article I wrote for Strictly Slots in November, 1999.  But I drag it out again every few years since I am still getting the same question and this answer is still as good as it was 13 years ago.

Strictly Slots, among other periodicals and books, is so full of detailed information about slot and video poker machines that I keep expecting people to have very complex questions for me — about random number generators or theoretical win percentages or some obscure video poker strategy. However, the question I’m asked most frequently is a simple one: How do I know when it is the right time to quit playing a particular machine?

Although it’s a basic query, the answer is not so straightforward. For years I’ve been compiling a list of answers to the question of “when to walk.” I find that they fall into three main categories: mathematical, common sensical, and emotional.

Although the following guidelines are more for the recreational player than the heavy gambler or video poker professional, many of these considerations are the same for both groups.

Tax Updates for Gamblers

We have received most of the documents we need and are starting to work on our 2013 tax returns.  You probably are doing the same and needing the most up to date information you can find relative to your gambling data.  If you are a new gambler – or have gone up in denomination and been getting more W-2G’s – you may find yourself with many questions.  I, with the help of Marissa Chien, herself a gambler and Enrolled Agent, wrote the book Tax Help for Gamblers for players such as you.  We discuss the basics of record-keeping and filing, for both the recreational and professional gambler who plays any casino game, including live and online poker.    We also cover state gambling tax laws for all 50 states.  You can go to http://www.shoplva.com/products/tax-help-for-gamblers-2nd-edition-ebook to find more details covered in the book and to order it as a hard copy or eBook.

Many of you already have the latest version of this book (2012), but are wondering if there are any recent changes or updates.  Continue reading

An Evening in Margaritaville

Margaritaville

Recently I was invited to a media dine at Margaritaville in the Flamingo Casino.  Now Brad and I are not Parrotheads (although we do like Jimmy Buffett music) and with the meds we take, we cannot drink alcoholic beverages.  So a restaurant with a theme of “It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere” does not have a special attraction to us.  However, we are always up to try something different – and this occasion was to introduce a new food menu as well as new drink choices.  So, invited to bring two more guests, we rounded up my sister Starr and her mate David to complete our party.

PARTY – that was the key theme of the evening. Continue reading
