Putting the Fun Back into Gambling

The howls of pain are getting louder and louder – here in the “Comments,” on Internet forums, and in the e-mails that fill my Inbox.  Gamblers are saying they are losing more during their casino visits and enjoying their time less.

I know that it is more fun to win than to lose.  But the very nature of the gambling beast means that one will have to endure more losing sessions than winning ones. Continue reading

Southern Indiana Horseshoe Trip Report – Part 2

Although the family reunion I described in my last entry was the high point of this Indiana visit, that was really just a side benefit of being invited to a VIP slot tournament consisting of 8 teams from various Harrah’s “regions” in the Eastern US.  Brad and I were one of 10 player on a Chicago team, westerners invited due to our heavy play at the Hammond Horseshoe. Southern Indiana Horseshoe Trip Report – Part 1

Fall was always our favorite time of year when we lived in Indiana, so we really enjoyed going back to see the rolling hills ablaze with autumn colors.  Such a contrast to the Las Vegas landscape.

We had not been back to this Ohio River 4-deck riverboat casino for many years and were amazed at the sprawling property, formerly named Caesars, now called the Southern Indiana Horseshoe Continue reading

Heading Back for an Indiana Visit

We will be at the Southern Indiana Horseshoe this coming weekend (October 11-15), playing in a VIP slot tournament with “Team Hammond.”  I guess it’s a battle between the two Indiana Horseshoes!   We haven’t been at this Indiana riverboat casino for many many years, not since back when it was named Caesars.  I imagine a lot has changed since then. Loving Your Input

Wow!  My last blog entry certainly generated a great discussion in the “Comments” – and I love that.  In fact, this is the very reason why I sometimes allow-to-be-published very negative comments or mention their content.  Being in the public eye for so long, I have had to develop very thick skin – and criticism doesn’t bother me at all anymore.  But I appreciate all your support.

Comments here have a wealth of information in them, Continue reading

Flak in the “Comments”

I’m getting some flak from a few readers who think I have deserted the low roller since we now play at a higher level than quarters.  And some others complain that I am “too unrealistic” about playing skillful video poker.  (Remember to keep your comments civil even when you disagree with me.  I won’t “Approve” a comment that uses vulgar language or rants and raves endlessly on the same topic!)

Here are some of my random thoughts about each of these complaints, most of them just repetitions of things I have said….many times over and over…in the past.  First, “frugal” does not mean cheap and does not describe just low-level gambling.  “Frugal” means getting good value for your money anywhere and at any level of gambling play. Back Home

Just got home from Hammond, Indiana, where we had a fun – and profitable this time – Harrah’s 7 Star trip to the Hammond Horseshoe.  As usual, we ran into players we knew.  We rarely go to any casino these days without running into friends from the VP world, whether it is in Vegas or clear across the country.  One of the blessings in our life! A Casino Party That No One Knows About

Sam’s Town, the Orleans, Gold Coast, and Suncoast are again, just like last couple of Sundays, giving 11x slots/7x VP today.  And once again it was not widely promoted in advance.  It’s in today’s newspaper, but a lot of people don’t read the newspaper before they go out for the day – or at all. Don’t get me wrong – I love the promo.  But I often am perplexed at the advertising techniques of casinos.  Let’s give a party and hope no one gets the invitation – that doesn’t seem like a way to maximize an advertising budget.
