The Taxing Part of Gambling

Just put our 2011 tax returns in the mail today.  This reminded me of the many questions about taxes down through the years.  Of course many of these have been answered in my book Tax Help for Gamblers, which, by the way, is now available in a new updated edition, both in paperback and as an eBook.

However, there has been interest in some of our personal tax details. Continue reading

A Positive Look at the Future

I must caution everyone not to take every piece of gambling information you read on the Internet as “gospel.”  That goes especially for gambling forums, where sometimes people post information about video poker games, or promotions, or casino policies that turns out to be erroneous.  These are usually inadvertent mistakes:  A poster doesn’t do a thorough scouting job.  Or, a casino employee gives out incorrect or incomplete details. Or, a casino makes a sudden mid-stream change.

This problem even exists in the “Comments” right here on my blog. Continue reading

Valuable Resources for Harrah’s Players

Because there are Caesars (formerly called Harrah’s) properties in many areas of the country, I know there are many players who welcome information on these casinos since they may travel to and play in more than one.  And this is especially true recently since there have been so many changes in the players club system.

Here are some of the resources I use to keep up (to supplement my never-ending questioning at players club desks all over the country!): Continue reading

The Future

First a message from Brad:  He wants to send a big thank-you for all the best wishes that keep coming his way since he celebrated his 80th birthday in January.  He says he’s not sure he will make it to 90, but he is certainly going to try since I have promised/threatened to kill him if he doesn’t!

Reaching this landmark birthday has, not surprising, seen Brad and me talking a lot about what Las Vegas will be like in the future for us personally, particularly our involvement in casino life.  Continue reading

28th Anniversary of Our First Vegas Vacation

In March of 1984 Brad and I took our first vacation together – a trip to Las Vegas, of course. I had been in Las Vegas years before, but just a short stop on a trip from Indiana to California.  Brad had been in Reno for a few hours many many years before, on a bus layover on his trip back to Indiana after his Air Force years in Japan.  But this 4-day visit would the first real casino-gambling visit for both of us. Problem Gambling

I would like to recommend  a 2-part article by Frank Kneeland, recounting his interview with Dr. William G. McCown on the subject of “Problem Gambling Prevention.”   Dr. McCown is considered one of the foremost researchers into pathological gambling in the country. Continue reading
