Never saw it adequately explained anywhere…in a five coin game the rule is one coin or five coins and nothing in between. Can you explain this?

sure. one through four coins are all bad bets because you don’t get full value on the royal. If you “must” make one of them, perhaps because you can’t afford to make a five-coin bet even with better odds, one coin loses the least.
