Now through October 4th, both the Chase Southwest Plus and Premier card have a 60,000 mile sign up bonus after spending $2000 in 3 months. The Plus has a $69 annual fee and the Premier has a $99 annual fee.
If you open the cards on October 1st – 4th, you could complete the spending for both on January 1st – 4th, 2018 and would earn a Southwest companion fare for all of 2018 and 2019. This is the best timing for this offer I have seen. After you complete the spending on both cards, you will have 124,000 Rapid Reward miles and a free companion fare. That should be good for 5 RT flights for 2 in the continental US. There are rumors that Southwest is going to add Hawaii to its flight plan, which would make this offer even better.
There are a couple things to keep in mind:
- The 60,000 miles offers expire on October 4th.
- To get the full benefit of the companion fare, you need to complete the spending in the year you want the companion fare to start. You could complete the spend in 2017 but then you would only have companion fare through 2018, instead of 2018 and 2019.
- The timing is tight. You typically have 93 days to complete the spend. So, you should apply for the cards October 1st – 4th, so you will have a couple days of margin.
- You can apply for 2 Chase cards on the same day. If you have had these cards in the last 2 years, you will most likely be declined.
There are several sites that have links for these offers. I would share a referral with you but the referral is for the 40,000 mile offer (which can usually be upgraded to the 60,000 offer, but not guaranteed). This offer for companion fare is tight on timing as it is so I don’t want to introduce another possible source of delay.
Even if you only get 1 card, the 60,000 mile offer is a great offer. I value Southwest RR points at 1.8 cents, so just the credit card is worth almost $1100 to me.

The 60,000 point offer for the Premier BUSINESS card ONLY remains available, but now requires $3,000 in purchases, instead of $2,000. Still a great deal.
I haven’t posted much on business cards. I don’t have any so I don’t follow them as closely. They do check to see if you actually have a business when you apply.
Thanks for the update. By the way, Southwest will start flying to Hawaii in 2018. The dates and routes have not been announced but sometime in 2018 it is scheduled to happen.
Many thanks to GWAE, LVA, and especially Jimmy Jazz for this blog. I completed the spend and should be receiving my miles/Companion Pass in the coming weeks. This is some really great content and hope to see more in the future!
Jimmy, I don’t know how else to contact you, so I’m replying to this blog post. Right now, there is a “targeted” campaign offering a MileagePlus Explorer Visa, a business card, giving 75,000 United Mileage Plus bonus miles after a $5,000 spend, with the first year’s card fee waived. Not everyone can get this offer, but if you do, it’s quite a good deal.
