Ever want to ask a surveillance guy?

November 7, 2018 15 Comments Written by Richard Munchkin

Want to know what he’s thinking up there in the eye?  Or what he is looking for?  Coming in December we will have a professional surveillance guy on Gambling With an Edge.  Send us your questions for him at [email protected], or post them below.  Stay tuned, it should be a good show.

I guess the most germane question would be, can you identify a blackjack advantage player just from observing him? Do most, all, or very few surveillance people know the rudiments of card counting?

How much do you have to win before you get heat (at the various places he worked)

How is survellience picking off slot players? Reel stopping? Checking machines for EV? Tracking through carded play?

Are most eye in the sky cameras being monitored by a black and white TV screen?
They can’t see the color of the checks used in play.
Do the surveillance operators have the facial recognition software?
Does the Bellagio have the most PTZ cameras of any casino?
How often are the camera domes cleaned?

It’s up to the pit people to watch for AP’s.

My questions would be: Does he know the martingale and reverse martingale systems and would he restrict someone from playing these systems if they were winning? In general, does he think casinos understand these systems? And does the system used in the movie Hangover actually work? They have a sexy woman “escort” fall over backwards to distract all the casino employees so the BP (big player) gets a chance to slip away with his winnings. If you are not familar with the movie you can see the clip at youtube by searching for “hangover blackjack scene”.

How much does the average survelliance operator make? How many operators per casino? Is the average employee motivated or only investigate when the pit calls? Thoughts on facial recognition software?

Are cameras capable of reading people’s text messages or identifying what they’re entering as username/passwords when they’re logging into something on a phone?

Hi, I have been a slot AP for a while now and I did not get heat at all really, but I found some slots that have VP and I am the only one playing VP in the place(fairly big stakes too). Do you have any tips on how to prevent getting heat:look more like a regular punter by autoplaying slots linked to the same jackpot or try to look like a rich kid(I am quite young)?

This multi-part question assumes modern electronic video surveillance, unlike the catwalk duty we’ve read about. On average, how many gaming tables, and how many slot machines, are viewed on a screen at a time? How many humans are positioned to monitor the screens? Assuming that this duty requires intense attention and concentration, is this a highly stressful occupation? Are they paid well? Thanks.

Can you see if someone is checking out their Grindr or Tinder account on their phone? If so, can you see the private pics that another user has sent them? If so, does the casino have a policy about the survelience operator not zooming in on such private (e.g., nude) pics sent to gamblers by an unsuspecting third party?

Is squirreling away chips super obvious once you are asked to review? Would you ever be asked to monitor a player putting away mere green chips? Once found out, is a rat holer’s players card flagged, thus triggering future monitoring without a call from the pit?

What is the unsafest place on a resort’s property from your perspective?

When a progressive jackpot is hit such as $9K it takes awhile to be paid. During this lapse in time is the eye in the sky being reviewed to see if any type of cheating is going on?
