I was looking through emails and saw one from Go To Travel Gal about a new way to earn Southwest Companion Fare. Southwest Companion fare allows you to have one person fly free on any Southwest flight you book, including frequent flier tickets. To me, it’s the best travel offer going.
In the past you had to earn 110,000 Rapid Reward miles ( or fly 100, one way trips in a year). Chase ( the bank offering the Southwest credit cards) has made it tougher to earn this perk. You can only have one personal credit card at a time now, and Chase will decline you if you have opened 5 credit cards in the last 2 years.
Now, the good news. The new offer from Chase is sign up for one of their 2 personal cards ( Priority or Premier), pay the annual fee ( $99 or $149), spend $4000 in 3 months and you get 30,000 rapid reward points AND a companion fare good through 2019. So, the requirement is much easier but the duration is less.
This is still a great deal. Credit card offers overall have been drying up the last year or so and this is a welcomed new offering. I would strongly encourage anyone who flies Southwest and has a travel companion to apply. Southwest is supposed to add Hawaii as a travel destination first quarter of 2019, making this deal even better.
I first saw this on Go To Travel Gal’s newsletter, so I am going to include her link on the subject. It is also covered in Million Mile Secrets, Nerd Wallet, the Southwest Website and several other locations.

According to the website, the Hawaiian flights will only originate from select California cities. But maybe that’s only the beginning……
I firmly believe that will be just the beginning. It makes sense to fly from California to start. I’m confident that once the flights start, they will expand to the rest of the country.
Just read that flights to Hawaii on Southwest are being delayed again due to the Government shutdown. SWA needs federal approval for the flight plans and they didn’t get that before the shutdown.
Just a reminder that this deal expires on February 11th.
Also, applying for this offer at a Chase bank doesn’t work. When I went to my local branch the other day, the Chase rep said that you can’t apply for the SWA cards in office. I could apply for the United Explorer card in office, though. I don’t know why United cards work in office but SWA cards don’t.
Thanks so much for sharing my blog and linking. Much appreciated!! When I need Vegas advice, I know where to go 🙂
Southwest just added flights to Hawaii. They are only from California, Ibut the prices are great. $50 – $100 one way. I’m sure SWA will be adding flights from other cities soon. This is great news for SWA fans.
