A Birthday Present That Keeps on Giving

March 9, 2021 18 Comments Written by Bob Dancer

I turned 74 years old in mid-February. Not a big deal. I have a birthday every year. But this time it turned out to be special in an unusual way.

My Nevada Driver License expired on my birthday. Again, not a big deal. It always expires on a birthday, every three or four years. But this time it turned out to be special in an unusual way.

In early January I received a W2G and had to show ID. Again, not a big deal. (Okay. I’ll stop repeating this phrase over and over again.) The floorman remarked that my expiration date was approaching. I thanked him for bringing this to my attention, and when I got home, I went to the DMV website to renew the license.

Except I couldn’t do it. Nevada has a law that says if you’re more than 70 years old, you must renew your license in person and cannot do it remotely. Okay. It’s less convenient for me, but among life’s problems it’s not that big. I clicked on the appropriate button to make a DMV appointment. It turned out that the next available appointment for me is in late April, more than two months after my license had expired.

This, of course, could be a problem for me. While I don’t expect to get a ticket that would require me to show my Driver License, I do expect to get W2Gs. If I had to go to the DMV without an appointment, on Saturdays they have a first-come-first-served policy. I could wait a few (or more) hours and finally get things taken care of, but I wanted to avoid standing in line outside in the wintertime if I could.

Fortunately, I saw on the website a tab that said, “Senior Driver License Extension.” I clicked on it and came to a letter that said, “In an effort to further assist our customers 65 years of age and older, the DMV has issued an automatic 1-year extension of a driver license (non-commercial and commercial) held by these individuals.” Further, it instructed me to print off that letter and show it to anyone who believed my license had expired. So, I did.

Two days after my birthday, I hit a W2G and the slot shift manager told me that with my expired license, I wouldn’t be able to get paid until I provided them with an unexpired ID. I showed him the letter and told him he could take a picture of it if he liked but I would like it back. I told him he could find a copy of that letter on the website www.dmvnv.com if he needed to verify its authenticity. This casino also had Internet access, so I could pull up the letter on my iPhone if necessary. He went away to think about it.

I ended up getting paid after another few minutes. This was the first time this slot shift manager had encountered the DMV extension letter, which is surprising given the letter on the DMV site was dated July 2020. If they didn’t accept this letter, I would have returned to the casino with my unexpired passport rather than stand in line at the DMV, but fortunately it didn’t come to that. At least this time.

As I write this, I haven’t been required to show the letter a second time because, since my birthday, I’ve not hit W2Gs anywhere else that required me to show ID. (At places where I’m a regular, they don’t make me show my ID every time.) But I will. And sooner or later, someone who isn’t aware of this one-year extension for seniors will reject my ID until I produce the letter again. Which I will do. I don’t expect any trouble with the slot departments. These all have people in charge who have been promoted several times and are authorized to make reasonable decisions. Agreeing with a document provided by the state government strikes me as a reasonable decision.

Sometimes, however, I need to show ID to cashiers at various casino restaurants and stores in order to use comps or points. These people may or may not be able to make the appropriate decision. Often, they are told to do things by the book. Period. We’ll see. If this happens, I’ll calmly explain that I’ll escalate this as high as I have to and eventually, they’ll have to accept the ID. I’ll quietly say that it’ll be easier on them if they do it my way the first time, which may or may not work. (Some people in my position would yell and scream like this was a Federal case, but I haven’t found that this action works well for me.)

I keep this letter folded up in my wallet. It is just on printer paper and every time I unfold it and then refold it; it becomes a little more likely to fall apart. But if I need to print another copy, I can do that.

I don’t know if Nevada is the only state with this policy or not. Perhaps in some places everybody, not just seniors, gets such an extension. But if you have a license close to expiring and you can’t renew your license online, it’s certainly worth checking out.

Bonnie and I were treated to dinner at Circa a week after my birthday. Circa has a policy of scanning your ID when you arrive on property, either by foot from the Fremont Street Experience, or when you arrive through their parking garage. (The entrance off of Main goes through the parking garage checkpoint.)

They don’t scan the front of your Driver License, but rather the bar code on the back. Surely the expiration date is part of that bar code. And if a computer is doing the checking, there’s no chance that it will miss the expiration date. But, curiously, I was waved through as though my license had not expired. On the way there, Bonnie and I were both sure that I would be pulled aside and would have to show the letter and explain things. But that didn’t happen.

My best guess is that it’s a simple matter of computer programming to include the conditions of 1) Nevada Driver License, 2) at least 65 years of age, and 3) license expired by less than one year. If these conditions are met, the ID is accepted as valid! Since these scanners scan thousands of Driver Licenses a day, and the policy has been in effect since July 2020, surely these conditions have been encountered a number of times.  So, the IT department was tasked with programming a workaround.

Note: Until I wrote this article, I always called it a Driver’s License, or maybe a Drivers’ License, but never a Driver License. I checked the Nevada DMV website to verify that I was getting the apostrophe in the right place and noticed the correct terminology. Truthfully, I was quite surprised that I had always mispronounced the term.

My husband has the same situation because he is over 70. He is renewing by mail but there are many hoops to jump through. He had to have a physical exam performed by his doctor and an eye exam. We mailed the completed forms with the $18.50 check on January 28th. Finally after 5 weeks, DMV cashed the check. He still has not received his license but we have heard it should be in a couple of weeks. We live in Mesquite and our DMV doesn’t accept online appointments. We have to stand in line to make an appointment for that week or the next. We have had people line up at 11:00 p.m. the night before until the police stopped it. There have been physical altercations among the people waiting in line. Does it suck? Yes! Many people here are driving with expired licenses and car registrations.

Yes, Goose, I do have a passport and I realize that’s an option. But it doesn’t fit easily in my wallet and I’m nervous about losing it.

You could move to Illinois where you go to the front of the line when you turn 65, just joking. Doesn’t Nevada issue state id’s? I stagger my dL and Id. I keep my Id in my pocket for w2g and keep my dL in my wallet for safekeeping. Happy birthday. Thanks for all your Vp help.

Another great option is the Passport Card. I prefer this option when showing ID at casinos since it does not show a mailing address or any address (even a PO Box) information. I think it’s much better for privacy. One issue is that there is no signature on a Passport Card, and some casinos have issues with this with regard to W2G forms. It’s an inconsistent issue, but I have been requested to show a paper passport or driver’s license to get paid. So, I guess, consistently inconsistent. But, the Passport Card would be perfectly fine in non-W2G situations.

Here in Florida our DL bureaus are open so no problem. Last September I was the only person in line they snapped a new photo ( after removing my mask) in and out in under 10 minutes. The difference in governors.

I had to chuckle at the reference of waiting a few (possibly more) hours in line at the DMV.
Here in the Great Garden State (NJ), we had folks camping out OVERNIGHT, sometimes for many days AND nights at a time, in the brutal summer heat and then winter cold, once DMV re-opened. It was an absolute debacle of monumental proportions! Jersey Strong!

Most if not all jurisdictions allow only one ID. It can be a DL or a state ID. I don’t think you are allowed to have both.

In Illinois I have both. Before tsa our ids for seniors never expired. Now they do. At 71 yoa I don’t like pulling my dL out of my wallet unless necessary.

This gave me a flashback to when I moved to Las Vegas for a little while in 2000. I decided to get a Nevada driver(see, I can learn!) license, so went to the DMV. I got there about 12:30pm and took a number. I sat there hour after hour.

The place closes at 5pm, so I thought for sure I’d be out of there by then. Well, 5pm rolls around and I’m waiting with dozens of other people to have their number called.

Two more hours pass by! Now, the place is thinning out, but there’s still plenty of people there. Many times throughout the day I had thought about leaving. However, it got to the point that I wanted to see exactly how long this was going to take.

Finally, about 7:30pm, my number is finally called. Luckily, all my paperwork was fine and I was out of there 10 minutes later with a Nevada driver license.

SEVEN hours of Hell at the DMV. Brutal!

He mentioned in the article that he had a passport. However; I don’t understand why he just doesn’t carry it with him and be done with it.

I went through a similar experience just a couple of weeks ago as I was turning 76 and my license was expiring.
No appointments until the end of April. I decided to do the Saturday walk-up in Reno and when I got there at 7:15 (45 minutes before the office opened there were already 300 people on line).
They gave me a ticket and said to come back at 1:30. When I got back there was still a line but it was moving well and it wasn’t too long before it was my turn.
This is one of those personal decisions on how important is it to the individual to have a real license. I traded off my Saturday to get one of the new licenses (to allow you to fly after 10/1/21). For me personally I just feel more comfortable having a license in my wallet than a piece of paper.

Spent 50 years in Chicago. Crime, corruption, more Crime, more corruption, and a Secretary of State Office that would rather Kill you than wait on you. ( they handle drivers’ licenses.) Moved to Florida 20 years ago, would never ever go back to Chicago. Did I mention that in Chicago there’s crime-corruption and more crime ?. Certain groups of people shoot each other like it’s open season on folks. One thousand murdered last year. 15,000 people shot last year. Doubt me? Google it.

Florida’s Licensing is like a picnic compared to Chicago. Oh, be careful in Chicago, they have crime. If you think you might want to visit Chicago, DON’T.

Bob don’t flog yourself about “Driver License”. In my state the license itself is titled “Driver’s License.” Which is grammatically correct? or legally correct? or whatever, who knows, who cares? However one’s DL reads, that’s it.

Oddly, last week at a Strip casino I hit three jackpots requiring W2-Gs. Each time I had my DL out ready to hand over but the attendant didn’t take it, didn’t even look at it, just took my player’s card out of the slot, put his ID card in, punched a few buttons, dashed off and returned with the money and the W2-G for me to sign (and quite quickly, too). The W2-G (typed) had all correct info on it including my SSN. I recently had the same thing happen at another Strip casino; they didn’t take my DL, just came back with the W2-G and the money. I’ve played regularly at both for years. I didn’t think about it until later that they didn’t seem to need my DL (or ID or anything). Have they programmed the machines to have that info pop up ‘centrally’ and print the W2-G, speeding the process along?

If you’re in the system and they recognize you, normally you don’t need ID

At the South Point, where i am extremely well known, when I got a W2G after a jackpot, their system flagged that my ID had expired. So I showed my letter and all is fine.
