Is the Steve Sax you mentioned, the Steve Sax of Los Angeles Dodgers fame?

No. Same spelling, and the backgammon player had just turned 21 years of age when the baseball player was going through a spell of wild throws.

There used to be a club in Zurich, Switzerland. People would meet for Chess and Backgammon. It’s a given that money was in play and changed owners during the games. Even the game of Chess was played for hard money. It was back in the days before Poker was the No 1 cash game for professional hustlers.
I always wondered how come the owner of that particular “Café” (a small bar with beverage service) could survive by hosting all these Chess and Backgammon players that were not actually drinking much but blocking most tables for endless hours. Later I learned that these players (especially the professionals that won most of the times) paid a fee to the restaurant manager who, in a certain way, ran the club just like some sort of a casino.

That “Café” is still in operation. 20 years after the chess/backgammon boom it’s open, but no more strategy games are being allowed there.

The beauty of the game is that it will never be solved, even great players make blunders, only Extreme Gammon XG can play at a 0 error rate. Unlike other games like chess, a novice has no chance to beating a master, with Backgammon a novice can win. Backgammon is an action game and I love it!

There are major tournaments twice a year in Los Angeles, each with an Intermediate division. Why don’t you join and play? Next up is the Los Angeles Open, June 9-12, 2022 at the LAX Hilton. At the very least, you would see old friends.
