Many years ago a friend told me about a mutual friend, Freddie. Freddie was Persian, and his fellow Iranian-Americans knew that Freddie knew a bookie or two. So they asked Freddie to place bets. As he explained to Max (who told me this story) he noticed that his friends always bet the same way, and they never won. Freddie, being no dummy, decided that free money was too good to pass up, so: “Now, I am the bookie!”

He had twenty-five grand riding on a football game, and he and Max sat down to watch. According to Max it was one of the most exciting games in the history of football. “I didn’t have a penny riding on it, and by the third quarter, I was limp!”

This whole time, with the lead changing hands every few minutes, Freddie sat expressionlessly, hands on his knees, not evincing the slightest concern. Then, as the game broke for a commercial, he leaned over and said: “Max, you tell me something? What they mean when they say ‘third and one?'”

Bookies sweat too, even the big corporate ones. They know where their exposure is and generally have a rooting interest. For agents and Pay-per-head bookies, they always have a rooting interest. I had a friend who was an agent. He sweated pretty much every bet. As he said, it’s a lot easier when you’re getting +110 instead of laying -110.
