Question of the Day - 25 February 2022

Q:

Questions. We get lots and lots of questions.

A:

Is there a city or state law requiring a patron having to show identification before entering a hotel/casino in Las Vegas? It happened to me two different times on my last trip to Las Vegas.

No. There's no law, policy, or even protocol that requires showing ID to enter a casino. It's a property-by-property decision. Famously, Circa opened with the requirement in an effort to "prevent those under 21 from entering, allowing for smoother operations for those inside the property," according to owner Derek Stevens. We've also been asked for ID on the way into Stevens' other downtown casinos, the D and Golden Gate. Silver Sevens also started checking IDs at its entrances recently. But the vast majority of Las Vegas casinos don't want to introduce any impediment between their gaming floors and their customers' wallets.

Can you come to Las Vegas by train from Ohio?

No. You can't come to Las Vegas from anywhere by train. You might at some point, if the Brightline high-speed connection from southern California is ever completed. Currently, you haven't been able to step off a train in Las Vegas since 1997, when the Desert Wind Amtrak service from Chicago, stopping in Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Las Vegas, before terminating in L.A., stopped running after 18 years.

Is valet parking available at casinos yet?

Yes. Valet parking has returned to all Las Vegas casinos, at least that we know of. And last we checked, valet parking was free at the Tropicana (non-event days), Treasure Island, Sahara, STRAT, and Venetian.

    Amtrak
Check the Amtrak website to get to Kingman Az. and Reno Nv. Greyhound will get you to McCarran from Kingman. When I drive to Nevada I watch the trains. You can take in all the scenery. Some day I’ll do it. Pretty sure it’s about 24 hrs.

    took Desert Wind once
Back in about 1994 we took the train from Chicago to Vegas. I think the trip was around 40 hours. It was actually 3 trains at once. My recollection is that in Denver the train split into 2, with one section heading northwest and the rest heading west. Then in Salt Lake City it split again with one part heading to San Francisco and our part heading south toward LA. It stopped in back of the Plaza, where we were picked up by my parents who lived in Vegas. Interestingly, in Denver, we picked up dozens of people with ski equipment who got on only to go to the ski areas, never leaving the vestibules. Through much of the trip the train went about 80 mph and through the Colorado mountains barely went 15 mph. It was a kind of fun trip to do once...ONCE.

    Desert Wind
My wife and I took the Desert Wind once from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. It was kind of neat to me, not so much for my wife, who thought it just took forever; it was about eight hours.

    Amtrak travel
Each time I've checked on travel with Amtrak for myself or for friends it's always worked out to take excessively long and often cost even more than an airline ticket, if you buy the airline ticket ahead of time to get the lower price. The only reason I can see to travel in USA by train is if you are afraid of flying, or if you actually enjoy watching the miles of landscape roll by for hours. Train travel in other countries is a lot more flexible, more connected, less costly and in general works better than what we have here.

    Circa scanning IDs
When I enter Circa from the Mahal garage they scan the back of my NV drivers license. The code contains everything that's printed on the front including full name and address.

I wonder if they keep all the information and do something with it, or just check the date of birth and then discard it.

    But the real question is...
...can you valet park your train at the casinos as long as you show proper ID?
