One time way back in 1990 or so, we went to try a burger special at the little Nob Hill casino, located at center Strip. It was a great deal and we were excited that it could fill a spot in the Top Ten in the upcoming Advisor<\/em>, due out in a week or so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, between the time we sampled the burger and the newsletter deadline, not only did the deal disappear, but so did the whole casino! The joint closed that same week and reopened a few years later as Casino Royale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moral of the story: Things change fast around here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which is why we\u2019re starting an Updates page. Rather than having to wait \u2019til the newsletter is published on the last day of the month, we\u2019ll be posting as these things occur. Here’s a rare bar-style bonus in a casino, and it’s a good one. Ojos Locos in North Las Vegas has a $50\/$50 deal that’s available to everyone (it’s not a sign-up bonus). Go to the club booth and give them $50 to get $100 put on your card. If you’re a new member, you’ll also get an additional bonus — probably $3, but possibly more. Be sure to play the bonus all the way through without letting your card time out, as the system is a bit finicky and might not recognize the remainder of your bonus (if it happens, you should be okay if you move to another machine). It’s a strong 100% bonus and you can do it once per week (the club booth says the weekly reset is on Thursdays). Word is it may be discontinued at the end of the month, so get over there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevada Brew Works Bonus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevada Brew Works in the Arts District (1327 S. Main St.) runs a play-$200-get-$20 bonus Monday-Thursday. There’s also a 100\/20 sign-up bonus and you can do both in succession. First earn the sign-up bonus. After you’ve played it through, reinsert your card and you’ll get a countdown for the 200\/20. It’s difficult to park in the area without a toll and there are only five machines, so you risk not getting a seat, so this might be a one-time play for the $30 bonus for many. Hours are 11 a.m. to midnight daily, 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of now this is running through the end of the month, but Timbers has extended these types of promotions in the past. No way to know, get in on a few before the end of the month. However, The Cantina is currently running the same promos as El Dorado Cantina and you can do both on the same day — 100\/20 on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the same deal all day Mondays. Also, food is half-price for everyone, at least through the end of August. Don’t be confused, the bar is attached to the Jade Dispensary in what appears to be some kind of branding deal, but they’re separate businesses with no access from the inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was the location listed in the ad we saw, so it appears it’s the only one in the group that’s running the promo. We’ll update if we find out otherwise, but it’s definitely not offered at the Durango\/Tropicana and Flamingo\/Grand Canyon bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sammy’s March Madness Promo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a good one at Sammy’s Woodfire Pizza (6500 W. Sahara). In 6500 Tavern, the bar that’s part of the restaurant, everyone with a Sammy’s players card gets to pick a team for the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Every time that team advances, you win free-play, starting with $5 and maxing out at a total of $185 if your team wins the championship. You get to pick your team, it’s not assigned. Duke and Auburn come to mind. Additionally, this is one of the best instacomps in town: Players get anything on the menu 50%-off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bonus raises the return to about 100.5% on quarter 6\/5 Bonus Poker. Not a bonanza, but the best bar hangout play in town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bonfire bar at 610 E. Naples near UNLV is running a daily $20 bonus. Sign up for a card and play, at least $20, and they’ll text you the following day with a $20-per-day free-play bonus (you won’t get it the first day). The subsequent day(s) bonus usually rings up shortly after you start playing, but sometimes doesn’t and you have to ask the bartender. It’s a bit awkward and it doesn’t appear that the deal will be continued in September, but you have nearly two weeks left as of this post. It’s a cool bar, with live bands and a happy hour daily from 2 to 7 pm, with 50%-off drinks and appetizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boom. Several elements of the Tuscany sign-up bonus have just been changed. There’ve been ferocious lines at the club booth, so they must have been getting hit hard, as these changes seem to indicate. The deal is now essentially a $50 free-play bonus for new members. When you sign up you get $40, plus $10 for an email address, with no additional requirements. After that, it’s possible to get another $50 on each of two separate trips, tut now there’s a requirement to earn 250 points ($500 coin-in) for each. That’s a 10% bonus and still a good deal, but nothing like it was. Additionally, there’s a head-scratching 7-day wait between return redemptions for non-locals. Here’s the new rules sheet sent in by an LVA member for those who want to jump through the hoops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We knew that the announcement that the Downtown Grand was getting all new machines wasn’t good news. Sure enough, the machines at the Furnace Bar are new and sparkly, but the paytables have been significantly devalued. Of greatest consequence, the former 9\/5 Double Double Bonus 4-way progressive is now an 8\/5 3-way. Previously almost always in the 100% range, it was at 98.85% when we checked. Also gone is 8\/5 Bonus Poker, devalued to 7\/5 (98.01%). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Luger steakhouse<\/strong> at Caesars Palace was supposed to debut a week from Wednesday, but to everyone’s surprise, it opened on Thursday, two weeks early. One of the oldest restaurant brands in the country, it dates back to the 1880s in New York, where it has two locations; the Vegas venue is the first beyond the Empire State. The prices are stratospheric: appetizers $15-$35; seafood cocktails $30-$40; seafood towers $96 (for two); chicken $45, lamb chops $75, Dover sole $90, and steaks starting at $72; sides and desserts $15. The restaurant is open daily to 10 p.m. and for lunch Wed.-Sun. at 11 a.m.; two lunch specials are a burger ($25) and steak sandwich ($30). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We wrote about Sgrizzi Pizza<\/strong> in the January 2023 Advisor<\/em>. It was in the Ahern non-casino hotel (formerly the Lucky Dragon), a small pizza outlet next to Marc\u2019s Trattoria, run by Marc Sgrizzi, owner-chef at several well-known eateries in town, including Marc\u2019s World Cuisine and Parma. We liked the Sgrizzi pizza so much that we returned a few weeks ago and sure enough, both Sgrizzi and the Trattoria were gone. The room is now called Ottimo and against our better judgment, we tried their pie. We should\u2019ve trusted our intuition; the pizza was instantly forgettable and that\u2019s putting it mildly. Marc\u2019s Ristorante & Bar will reportedly open by the end of the year at 9250 S. Rainbow Blvd. #130.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rod Stewart Announces Final Dates for Long Residency:<\/strong> British rocker Rod Stewart launched his residency at Caesars Palace in 2011 and after 13 years is calling it quits. \u201cRod Stewart \u2013 The Hits\u201d will conclude with the performer’s 200th show next summer. The final dates that have just been added are July 24, 26, 27, and 31 and Aug. 2, 3, and 7. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. PT. A few tickets also remain for Stewart’s dates this month: Nov. 10, 11, 15, 17, 18, and 22 (though we don’t recommend coming to Vegas for the last four shows during the height of the FU F1 misery).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scorpions Announce New Residency:<\/strong> The hard-rock and heavy-metal German band Scorpions is returning to Las Vegas for a second residency at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood. The Scorpions played nine shows, all sold out, in Vegas in March and April 2022 and will put on another nine shows to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band’s classic album Love at First Sting <\/em>(with the hits “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” “Still Loving You,” and “Big City Nights”). The dates are April:11, 13, 18, 20, 24, 26, and 28; and May 1 and 3. General-public tickets go on sale next Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RIP Dirk Arthur:<\/strong> Dirk Arthur, a mainstay Las Vegas headliner, illusionist, and big-cat performer of days gone by, died in Las Vegas last Friday at age 63 of an apparent heart attack. Arthur began his career in Las Vegas in the 1990s and continued to perform up until 2015 at Westgate in Dirk Arthur’s Wild Illusions<\/em>. After that, animal-rights activism pretty much ended any chance he might have had to ply his big-animal trade on stage here. Still, he kept his big cats at his home, struggling to care for them and himself without much income. A fellow performer and animal-refuge proprietor told VitalVegas’ Scott Roeben, “I do not believe my friend Dirk died of a heart attack, but rather of a broken heart.” Scott knew Arthur personally and you can read his eulogy and see a few photos here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
