You enter the Discoshow<\/em> bilevel sanctum through a door off the casino and pass through a mirrored anteroom.<\/p>\n\n\n

Out the back door is 99 Prince, the first-floor bar that\u2019s as dark and sinister as a New York subway station. You walk up the stairs, down a long hall, and wait in the lounge outside the showroom. The Disco (drag) Queen, Mother, regales you for 10 minutes or so from a book of disco fairy tales, then the doors open.<\/p>\n\n\n

You show the wristband you\u2019re given upon checking in and file into Glitterloft, the theater, such as it is: a square space with no seats, a catwalk above and around the perimeter, and huge video panels encircling the room with non-stop scenes from \u201970s Manhattan and Chicago. The Gloria Gaynor tune \u201cI Will Survive\u201d is playing \u2014 and you hope you\u2019re not supposed to take it literally.<\/p>\n\n\n

Looking around, you\u2019ll note that a goodly portion of the audience is dressed in Vegas-disco outfits, ready to rock \u2019em and sock \u2019em. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it\u2019s hard not to rock at this $40 million show, especially if you were into the disco music and scene 40-50 years ago. You stand throughout the performance, which consists of a six-segment dance lesson from Ake (\u201cOkay\u201d) Blomqvist, modeled and named after a Finnish actor and dance instructor \u2014 bright white suit, Scandinavian accent, fun moves, and all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 10 dancers gyrate, luxate, and roller skate on the catwalk, backed by the intense videos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At several points during the show, they come down to the dance floor and climb atop \u201cdumpsters\u201d rolled in and out to get up close and sweaty with the audience. The floor lights up with X-mark-the-spots rectangles and crowd managers with small paddles prod the audience out of the way of the portable stages.<\/p>\n\n\n

It\u2019s all as highly choreographed and produced and risqu\u00e9 as you\u2019d expect from Spiegelworld, especially if you\u2019ve seen Absinthe<\/em> or Atomic Saloon<\/em>. Also, it\u2019s nothing if not high energy, revving up the crowd to a soundtrack of Chic\u2019s \u201cLe Freak,\u201d \u201cGood Times,\u201d and \u201cEverybody Dance,\u201d The Trammps\u2019 \u201cDisco Inferno,\u201d and the finale, \u201cWe Are Family,\u201d the disco anthem from Sister Sledge, accompanied by \u2014 what else? \u2014 a strobe effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then DiscoShow <\/em>slams shut, the doors fling open, and you shuffle out after 70 minutes of standing, dancing, shoving, and swiveling to take it all in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this sounds kind of chaotic and a bit indiscriminate, that\u2019s because it is. DiscoShow<\/em> isn\u2019t your grandfather\u2019s Vegas entertainment. It\u2019s immersive, participatory, and strenuous, so it\u2019s not for everyone. But if you\u2019re up for more of a party than any other Las Vegas production show in recent memory, this is an experience you won\u2019t soon forget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
