Its latest misfortune would be aggravating were it not so perversely funny. Although <strong>Bally&#8217;s Corp<\/strong>. is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballys.com\/news\/news-details\/2024\/Ballys-Chicago-Announces-Investment-Opportunity-2024-oGVtw87vwp\/default.aspx\">shaking practically every tree<\/a> in Christendom in its desperation for money, a group of cranks feels left out of this sucker bet. A <a href=\"https:\/\/blockclubchicago.org\/2025\/01\/31\/white-men-are-suing-ballys-casino-city-over-investment-offer-aimed-at-women-minorities\/\">couple of Texas crackers<\/a>, <strong>Richard Fisher<\/strong> and <strong>Phillip Aronoff<\/strong>, are suing Bally&#8217;s, claiming their rights as white men are being violated by not being able to put money into this boondoggle. Fools and their money &#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Having too much time on its hands, the Orwellian-named <strong>American Alliance for Equal Rights<\/strong>, a stalking horse for white-male supremacism, is going after Bally&#8217;s on the grounds that <em>&#8220;a race-based stock offering is illegal, and this court should declare it as such<\/em>.&#8221; Also piling on is the <strong>Wisconsin Institute for Law &amp; Liberty<\/strong>, presumably on the principle that one should have the liberty to make stupid financial decisions. Who knew that Bally&#8217;s megaresort was such a hot meal ticket?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reluctant though we are to defend Bally&#8217;s Chicago, the stock offering is NOT race-based, as women of all hues can participate. Also, if Bally&#8217;s is out of compliance with its female\/minority set-aside, it will be in breach of contract with the city of <strong>Chicago<\/strong>. So it finds itself in a pickle. To compound the obvious racism of the Alliance&#8217;s lawsuit, Bally&#8217;s happens to be a company run by two gentlemen of color, CEO <strong>Robeson Reaves<\/strong> and CFO <strong>Marcus Glover<\/strong>, a fact that has probably not gone unnoticed by the litigants\u2014as has overall leadership of Chairman <strong>Soo Kim,<\/strong> yet another minority face. How dare they! Don&#8217;t they know their place?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"820\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Ballys_Chicago-1.jpg.webp?resize=820%2C510&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-873520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Ballys_Chicago-1.jpg.webp?w=820&amp;ssl=1 820w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Ballys_Chicago-1.jpg.webp?resize=300%2C187&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Ballys_Chicago-1.jpg.webp?resize=768%2C478&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Ballys_Chicago-1.jpg.webp?resize=445%2C277&amp;ssl=1 445w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Such is Bally&#8217;s need for cash that its underwriter, <strong>Loop Capital<\/strong>, isn&#8217;t actually verifying the race or gender of &#8216;minority investors,&#8217; which quite undercuts Bally&#8217;s moral high ground. Doubtless the only color Bally&#8217;s is concerned with is green. (Chicago Mayor <strong>Brandon Johnson<\/strong> should look into this.) However, Bally&#8217;s saw Fisher and Aronoff coming, having published a disclaimer that the set-aside \u201c<em>may result in lawsuits against us and the City of Chicago by persons that do not meet<\/em>\u201d its criteria, i.e., white guys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;d think the latter group would have so many dubious investment opportunities (Bitcoin! Election betting! Multi-game parlays!) luxuriating about at every hand that they would not need to sink their money into this turkey. You would think wrongly. To add to the perversity of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/30\/media\/chicago-casino-project-accused-of-not-allowing-white-men-to-invest-in-plan-blatantly-discriminatory\/\">this Quixotic honky crusade<\/a>, if &#8220;<em>a court were to find the Class A Qualification Criteria to be invalid or unconstitutional, the Host Community Agreement could be terminated<\/em>,&#8221; aborting Bally&#8217;s Chicago half-finished and possibly sinking Bally&#8217;s Corp. in the process. It&#8217;s\u2014by Bally&#8217;s own admission\u2014a risky investment, one that will take at least three years to show a return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their sense of humor being as dark as their skin is pale, Fisher and Aronoff have the <em>cojones<\/em> to claim that Bally&#8217;s is affronting &#8220;<em>the <strong>Civil Rights Act of 1866<\/strong>, the first <strong>Ku Klux Klan Act<\/strong> and years of <strong>Supreme Court<\/strong> precedent.<\/em>&#8221; It takes some <em>huevos<\/em> to claim you&#8217;re a civil rights crusader at the same time you&#8217;re trying to wrest opportunities <em>away<\/em> from women and people of color. (Equating Bally&#8217;s with the KKK is so offensive we won&#8217;t even go there.)<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Ballys-Chicago-new.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-862451\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>It\u2019s so blatantly discriminatory, I can\u2019t imagine how that could possibly be permissible<\/em>,\u201d wailed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawcallahan.com\/about\/patrick-m-callahan\/\">Chicago-based lawyer<\/a> <strong>Patrick Callahan<\/strong>, conveniently forgetting that, if he wants to gamble recklessly, he can always buy as many BALY shares as he wants at $18.10 a pop. Callahan may be an earnest, if naive, wannabe investor. Others are not so innocent. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/us-news\/law\/americas-battle-over-dei-strikes-a-chicago-casinos-financing-plan-d9b56ff8?siteid=yhoof2\">Their real target<\/a> is the concept of diversity, equity and inclusion. (And you thought the <strong>United States<\/strong> was the land of opportunity. Ha!) And never forget that when someone is called a &#8220;DEI hire&#8221; it&#8217;s only because the speaker doesn&#8217;t yet dare to use the N-word in public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>In short, defendants have stacked the deck against them<\/em>,\u201d the legal filing straightfacedly pleads of its two white men of privilege, showing that somebody enjoys a rich vein of irony. That person might be <strong>Edward Blum<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Blum_(litigant)\">a bitter old man<\/a> of means, with nothing better to do with himself than persecute women and minorities for having the effrontery to try and get ahead in life. His alleged persecutor in life is the <strong>NAACP<\/strong>, as Blum <a href=\"https:\/\/arkansasadvocate.com\/2023\/12\/04\/edward-blums-crusade-against-affirmative-action-used-legal-strategy-of-civil-rights-activists\/#:~:text=His%20crusade%20began%20in%20the,to%20the%20U.S.%20Supreme%20Court.\">openly seeks to take us back<\/a> to the Fifties (if not earlier) and the evil days of &#8216;separate but equal.&#8217; He is, in intent, if not in word, a racist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the ironies multiply, it is meet and right to point out that Bally&#8217;s Chicago is a terrible investment, one that the Black community <a href=\"https:\/\/thetriibe.com\/2025\/01\/generational-wealth-financial-experts-say-ballys-casino-investment-is-risky\/\">has gotten hip to<\/a>. Just ask financial boffin <strong>Damon Jones<\/strong>, on the faculty of the <strong>University of Chicago<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Harris School of Public Policy<\/strong>. Citing its inherent risks, Jones counsels against putting one&#8217;s money into it: &#8220;<em>When people have really good investment opportunities they don&#8217;t advertise them.  They keep them to themselves. [As] a general financial rule, if someone is advertising it to you, question it.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To their discredit, Chicago officials have been talking up the megaresort to potential investors as a way to build up &#8220;generational wealth.&#8221; To us, it&#8217;s sheerest financial speculation. And since the window for buying into it closed Jan. 31, the point may be moot. But, since we&#8217;re fair-minded &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By all means<\/strong> Bally&#8217;s should let Fisher and Aronoff and any other damn fool of their stripe buy a chunk of this boondoggle. The rest of us will laugh all the way to the bank when they ultimately lose their shirts. (We suspect Blum is too smart to follow his fellows down the fiscal rathole.) He has appointed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chandeni-sendall-5201bb2\/\">Deputy City Attorney<\/a> <strong>Chendani Sendall<\/strong>, from <strong>Reno<\/strong>, to replace the embattled <strong>Brittnie Watkins<\/strong> on the comparably embattled <strong>Nevada Gaming Control Board<\/strong>. OK, Sendall is an attorney and the board needs a third lawyer like it needs a hole in the head. (Wait, it&#8217;s already got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/news\/longtime-judge-ousted-as-las-vegans-pick-lesser-known-candidate\/\">a hole in the head<\/a>.) But she&#8217;s also a <a href=\"https:\/\/nevadacurrent.com\/briefs\/lombardo-fills-vacancy-on-gaming-control-board\/\">former internal auditor <\/a>for <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> and if there&#8217;s any realm in which the board has found itself lacking\u2014besides courage\u2014it&#8217;s understanding the inner workings of a casino. Sendall&#8217;s appointment gives us hope that the board won&#8217;t be so easily hoodwinked in the future. Heck, maybe she can feed <strong>George Assad<\/strong> a clue or two. And <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/2025\/01\/resorts-world-experience-center-5-billion\/\">we mean big<\/a>: 35,000 square feet of convention space, a 7,000-seat arena and (oh yes) 350,000 square feet of gambling. <strong>Genting Group<\/strong> promises that local businesses won&#8217;t be shut out from the 30-plus restaurants and so on. We hope not &#8230; Repeated hacking of <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> is going to cost the company $45 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mgm-agrees-to-pay-45-million-to-settle-data-breach-lawsuit-e076c842\">damages to plaintiffs<\/a>. That&#8217;s the settlement figure on a class-action lawsuit and it sounds like MGM got off light &#8230; <strong>Hawaii<\/strong> has had several abortive flirtations with legalized gambling. The oddest was when then-guv <strong>Linda Lingle<\/strong> proposed a one-year-only casino as a test flight. Imagine having to recoup 100% of your investment in a single year! But we digress. iGaming is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnetwork.com\/news\/new-bill-proposes-legalizing-online-casinos-in-hawaii\">on the Lege&#8217;s docket for this year<\/a>. It probably won&#8217;t pass but they have our best wishes &#8230; No wonder Hawiian solons are interested in iGaming: It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playusa.com\/us-online-casino-growth-accelerated-in-2024-with-over-8-4-billion-in-full-year-revenue\/\">brought in $8.4 billion<\/a> last year, despite being limited to a handful of states. How come? According to the <strong>Department of Commerce<\/strong>, allegedly hard-pressed consumers are &#8220;<em>making more and spending more<\/em>.&#8221; Indeed &#8230; <strong>Kalshi<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mollybohannon\/2025\/01\/13\/donald-trump-jr-joins-prediction-market-kalshi\/\">which just signed<\/a> <strong>Donald Trump Jr<\/strong>. to a sinecure, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.covers.com\/industry\/kalshi-event-contracts-sports-betting-futures-super-bowl-january-2025\">wading into sports betting<\/a>. For mere pennies, you can bet on the <strong>Super Bowl<\/strong> with Kalshi, although we&#8217;d opt for a bookmaker that isn&#8217;t forbidden to engage in &#8220;gaming&#8221; under federal regulations, as Kalshi currently is &#8230;  <strong>Seminole Hard Rock<\/strong> in <strong>Tampa<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessobserverfl.com\/news\/2025\/jan\/23\/tampa-resort-upgrades\/\">is on the move<\/a>. It&#8217;s added 350 slots, upgraded 240 hotel rooms and hired 200 more employees. The hotel, by the way, is now 100% non-smoking, a move we applaud &#8230; A major tribal casino could be coming to <strong>North Dakota<\/strong>. A proposal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valleynewslive.com\/2025\/01\/27\/hotel-casino-be-considered-along-i-29-southwest-grand-forks\/\">is being advanced<\/a> by the <strong>Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa<\/strong> to build a Class III casino and 200-room hotel alongside <strong>I-29<\/strong>.
