{"id":891570,"date":"2025-08-02T12:22:32","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T19:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/?p=891570"},"modified":"2025-08-02T12:22:37","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T19:22:37","slug":"strip-snaps-slump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/blog\/strip-snaps-slump\/","title":{"rendered":"Strip Snaps Slump"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>After months of the bow planes<\/strong> being locked in &#8220;Dive,&#8221; the submersible U.S.S. <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> finally righted itself, at least for June. Gambling grosses nudged upward 1%, nabbing $765 million. Slots carried the freight, as the one-armed bandits took 10% more, year\/year. Baccarat wasn&#8217;t the usual disaster but it was down 7%, while all other table games slumped 9.5%. So score one for the low rollers, who saved <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>&#8216; bacon &#8230; and damned little gratitude can they expect for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Despite nearly 6% unemployment, locals casinos were strong, grossing $266 million. Slot win jumped 9.5% on 3% more coin-in. Tables brought in $45 million on tight (15%) hold, for a 15% gain, although 11.5% less was laid on the green felt. Perhaps players are seeking better value <strong>Downtown<\/strong>: Its gambling grosses swelled 10.5%, reaching $73 million. Indeed, unless one counts rural <strong>Wendover<\/strong> ($22 million, flat), all the June auguries were positive. <strong>North Las Vegas<\/strong>, despite an ongoing string of casino closures (adios,<strong> Poker Palace<\/strong>), was up 4.5% to $24 million. The <strong>Boulder Strip<\/strong> leapt 19% to $87.5 million while miscellaneous <strong>Clark County<\/strong> climbed 5.5% to $155.5 million. Borderline towns <strong>Laughlin<\/strong> ($40 million, +6.5%) and <strong>Mesquite<\/strong> ($14 million, +2.5%) also prospered. Even the volatile <strong>Washoe County<\/strong> area did well. <strong>Reno<\/strong> was up 5.5% to $68 million, <strong>Sparks<\/strong> was up 2% to $13.5 million and even <strong>Lake Tahoe<\/strong> managed a 2.5% gain to $20 million.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"367\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Downtown_Grand_Las_Vegas_Nevada.jpg?resize=500%2C367&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-886238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Downtown_Grand_Las_Vegas_Nevada.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Downtown_Grand_Las_Vegas_Nevada.jpg?resize=300%2C220&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Downtown_Grand_Las_Vegas_Nevada.jpg?resize=445%2C327&amp;ssl=1 445w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>All this was accomplished at a time of an 11% plunge in visitation to Sin City. The U.S. government would appear to have scored a massive own-goal in its war on tourism. International visitors to Las Vegas comprise 12% of the total picture and the administration has succeeded in scaring most of them away. Also, there is considerable anecdotal evidence of a consumer backlash against the Strip&#8217;s bottomless greed and nickel-and-dime ways. Recent headlines included &#8220;<em>Tourism Down in Las Vegas: Hotel Occupancy Plummets<\/em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em>Where Did All the Las Vegas Tippers Go?<\/em>&#8221; Also, &#8220;<em>Is Las Vegas in Trouble?<\/em>&#8221; (Short answer: Yes.) Our favorite has to be, \u201c&#8217;<em>$50 Charge Because I Unplugged a Cord&#8217;: Paris Las Vegas Hotel\u2019s Tiny Print Fee Sums up Why Visitors Are Fleeing the City<\/em>.&#8221; Yes, <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> really ripped off a customer for the unconscionable sin of pulling the plug on the minibar. No wonder Las Vegas hotel occupancy is down 12%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even perpetual optimist <strong>Steve &#8220;The Shill&#8221; Hill<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cdcgaming.com\/las-vegas-tourism-head-expects-further-declines-in-visitation-and-occupancy-before-improvement\/\">is fretful<\/a>. Understating the gravity of the problem, Hill began with \u201c<em>The last couple of months haven\u2019t been quite as good and things are down a little bit as everybody knows<\/em>.\u201d If Hill thinks the problem is two or three months old, he&#8217;s been smoking some awfully good crack. Even he had to acknowledge, though, that the numbers were the worst he&#8217;d seen since the <strong>Great Recession<\/strong>. Luxury demographics are still doing well\u2014and why not? But &#8220;<em>folks around the country are concerned about their jobs and their financial situation causing them to hesitate.<\/em>\u201d So might Las Vegas&#8217; new reputation as <strong>The Ripoff Capital of the World<\/strong>. Players are certainly doing their gambling closer to home. Hill&#8217;s new slogan is about 25 years out of date. When Hill says, &#8220;<em>It is exceptionally difficult now to make a major integrated resort pencil right now<\/em>,&#8221; he&#8217;s guilty of committing truth, as <strong>Fontainebleau<\/strong> and <strong>Resorts World Las Vegas<\/strong> can painfully testify\u2014although we agree that <strong>Hard Rock Las Vegas<\/strong> may be the big-buck exception that proves the rule. Still, when Hill blithely says that regional casinos have no effect on Sin City, he sounds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/blog\/regional-gambling-still-strong\/\">dangerously out to lunch<\/a>. Perhaps we should comp him an <em>S&amp;G <\/em>subscription &#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s virtually impossible to square these and other baleful economic indicators with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/Panglossian\">Panglossian degree<\/a> of optimism coming out of corporate boardrooms this past week. No business? No problem! Not only did Caesars CEO <strong>Tom Reeg <\/strong>and <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> CEO <strong>Bill Hornbuckle<\/strong> blow smoke up their shareholders&#8217; asses, so did <strong>Vici Properties<\/strong> bosses <strong>Edward Pitoniak<\/strong> and <strong>John Payne<\/strong>. The latter <a href=\"https:\/\/cdcgaming.com\/vici-downplays-vegas-woes-in-earnings-call\/\">lashed out at reality<\/a> in a rant whereby three quarters of Strip declines became &#8220;<em>a period of normalization<\/em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em>a short-term blip<\/em>.&#8221; (A damned expensive blip.) Vici execs pointed to strong convention bookings in late 2025. Fair enough. They also cited &#8220;projections&#8221; of strong sports and event attendance. Our recollection is that &#8220;projections&#8221; were similarly roseate at this point in 2008 &#8230; and we know what happened then, including two major corporate bankruptcies. Never mind that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/01\/trump-erika-mcentarfer-jobs-report-fired.html?cdmc=30hPVPufujWIMdAQqFYVcBKnKyU&amp;refcode2=30hPVPufujWIMdAQqFYVcBKnKyU&amp;refcodecdmc=30hPVPufujWIMdAQqFYVcBKnKyU\">the economy is a shambles<\/a> and the <strong>S&amp;P Index<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/31\/stock-market-today-live-updates.html\">just fell through the floor<\/a>. To revive a 2009 MGM marketing slogan, Shut up and play. In a thoroughly predictable screw-you to the City Council, he <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/ny-mayor-eric-adams-reverses-council-move-blocking-bronx-casino-plan\/\">vetoed its veto<\/a> of the $4 billion <strong>Soo Kim<\/strong> pipe dream. Since the council has to muster 34 votes to override Hizzoner, it looks like Bally&#8217;s is back in the running. The mayor dressed up his decision in rhetoric about how he was giving <strong>Bronx<\/strong> citizens a fair economic shake. But not even the legacy media has been fooled. Adams really ought to earn a commission on the $115 million &#8220;gaming event fee&#8221; (<em>read<\/em>: kickback) Bally&#8217;s has promised to the <strong>Trump Organization<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With his political career in ashes (he&#8217;s polling no better than 13% in the present mayoral race), the opportunistic Adams is transparently angling for a job with the Trumps, probably in the federal government and nobody is being shy about pointing that out. The corruption runs deeper than Adams: &#8220;<em>Campaign attorney <strong>Vito Pitta<\/strong>, who also lobbies for Bally\u2019s, and <strong>Frank Carone<\/strong>, Adams\u2019 former campaign chairman who has worked for Bally\u2019s chairman, were both linked to the project<\/em>.&#8221; To say that one hand washes the other would understate the number of dirty mitts involved. Still, when the American public can&#8217;t get riled up about pedophilia, what&#8217;s a little cronyism and graft among buddies? As for Bally&#8217;s, its house of cards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-au\/news\/australia\/star-to-pay-back-41-million-after-lifeline-casino-deal-collapses\/ar-AA1JHqJ0\">continues to collapse<\/a>. If it pulls out an improbable victory in <strong>New York State<\/strong>, it will be the first dog that caught multiple cars at once.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"375\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/strat.jpg?resize=375%2C225&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-844374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/strat.jpg?w=375&amp;ssl=1 375w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/strat.jpg?resize=300%2C180&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>JOTTINGS<\/strong>: Although <strong>Wall Street<\/strong> is souring on <strong>Golden Entertainment<\/strong>, the company hopes to change minds with a revamped casino floor at <strong>The Strat<\/strong> (750 slot machines and 44 table games). The question is whether The Strat&#8217;s low-roller clientele will return to <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> for this <a href=\"https:\/\/news3lv.com\/news\/local\/the-strat-unveils-revamped-casino-and-exciting-promotions\">budget-friendly offering<\/a>, as they&#8217;re currently avoiding the <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> <strong>Strip<\/strong> in droves &#8230; Speaking of economic headwinds, Cedar Crossing will face some when it opens in casino-saturated Iowa. Even so, having survived all legal and regulatory challenges, the pleasure palace <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs2iowa.com\/news\/local\/cedar-crossing-casino-construction-progresses-amid-iowas-casino-revenue-decline-gamble-walls-rapids-downtown-gaming-new-years-eve-cedar-rapids\">is proceeding apace<\/a> &#8230; An attempt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2025-07-28\/historical-horse-racing-machines\">to sneak racinos<\/a> in <strong>California <\/strong>has run into Attorney General <strong>Rob Bonta<\/strong>. Nor are the state&#8217;s Native American tribes turning a blind eye to what are, in essence, slot machines. Maintaining such we&#8217;re-not-a-racino fictions is a win-win for all politicians in the Bluegrass State, to say nothing of Circa genius <strong>Derek Stevens<\/strong> &#8230; Faced with an unpaid tax bill, <strong>Hinton, Oklahoma<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamblingnews.com\/news\/delaware-nation-sues-hinton-over-treats-to-cut-services-to-casino\/\">is getting even<\/a> with the <strong>Delaware Nation<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Casino Oklahoma<\/strong>. Hinton would shut it down by dint of cutting its electrical supply. Perhaps the Delaware should think about building their own generator &#8230; <strong>Treasure Island<\/strong> is keeping up with the Joneses. <strong>Phil Ruffin<\/strong> has inked a pact with <strong>Accor Group<\/strong> whereby he gets access to their database and the casino becomes &#8220;<em>Treasure Island \u2013 TI Las Vegas Hotel &amp; Casino, Handwritten Collection<\/em>,&#8221; cumbersome nomenclature if we ever heard it &#8230; Don&#8217;t tell <strong>Hill The Shill<\/strong> (see above), but <strong>Virginia<\/strong> casinos are doing well. In the case of <strong>Rivers Portsmouth<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wavy.com\/portsmouth-casino\/local-construction-company-chosen-to-complete-hotel-at-rivers-casino-portsmouth\/\">business is good enough to warrant<\/a> a $65 million, 106-room hotel, to debut in early 2027 &#8230; <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> is sufficiently hard up for business that game-makers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/las-vegas-casinos-keep-things-fresh-with-new-games-3396077\/\">trying out variants on casino classic<\/a>s. We applaud the initiative\u2014especially if it is accompanied by reasonable table minimums.
