{"id":899885,"date":"2025-12-12T09:16:39","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T17:16:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/?p=899885"},"modified":"2025-12-13T08:03:54","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T16:03:54","slug":"much-ado-about-nothing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/blog\/much-ado-about-nothing\/","title":{"rendered":"Much Ado About Nothing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>We&#8217;ve been giving<\/strong> this story a wide berth but &#8230; someone perspicacious in the <strong>White House<\/strong> press corps noticed the yawning chasm between the symbolism of <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poconorecord.com\/picture-gallery\/news\/politics\/2025\/12\/09\/donald-trump-comes-to-poconos-at-mount-airy-casino-resort\/87673731007\/\">making a stump speech<\/a> at <strong>Mount Airy Resort<\/strong> and the fact of his having signed into law an onerous tax increase on gamblers. The latter was part of a budget enacted in haste, to be repented at leasure. (To be crystal clear, the gambling-tax hike was the evil handiwork of GOP Sen. <strong>Mike Crapo<\/strong>.) As might be expected, <em>Fox Business<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/trump-says-hell-think-about-eliminating-tax-gambling-winnings\">tried to spin<\/a> the presidential response as a major policy shift. The truth is more mundane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><em>SBC Americas<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/sbcamericas.com\/2025\/12\/10\/trump-gambling-tax-repeal-reaction\/\">provided the full context<\/a> &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI haven\u2019t been asked that question in a long time. No tax on gambling? We have no tax on tips, we have no tax on <strong>Social Security<\/strong>, we have no tax on overtime. No tax on gambling winnings? I don\u2019t know about that,\u201d he said with a laugh and head shake. \u201cI\u2019m going to have to think about that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Very different, huh? It us reminds us of Mom&#8217;s favorite euphemism for no: &#8220;We&#8217;ll see.&#8221; Even the favorable Fox coverage sounded like an empty promise. &#8220;<em>I don&#8217;t know about that,<\/em>&#8221; seems to frame an outright rejection. Besides, regardless if Trump &#8216;thinks about that&#8217; until the cows come home, it&#8217;s not up to him. Congress would have to reverse field on the odious levy, which would require the Republican majority in the <strong>U.S. Senate<\/strong>, a clubby bunch, to throw Crapo under the bus. Not impossible but highly unlikely. <strong>If <\/strong>POTUS were to experience a change of mind and throw his weight upon <strong>Capitol Hill<\/strong>, things just might change, given the GOP&#8217;s extreme fealty to him. As does the fact that Big Gaming seems to have come around on an issue about which it&#8217;s been shamefully mum up to this point. A Who&#8217;s Who of the industry descended upon <strong>Washington, D.C. <\/strong>this week. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/las-vegas-casino-heavyweights-implore-congress-to-restore-gambling-loss-tax-deduction-3594519\/\">Belatedly advocating for John Q. Gambler <\/a>were <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> CEO <strong>Bill Hornbuckle<\/strong> (<em>above<\/em>), <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> CEO <strong>Tom Reeg<\/strong>, <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> CEO <strong>Craig Billings<\/strong> and <strong>Circa<\/strong> mastermind <strong>Derek Stevens<\/strong>. They were chaperoned by <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> President <strong>Bill Miller<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When CEOs talk, Congress listens. While only Stevens is a friend of the average gambler, we suspect the others have finally spoken up because they&#8217;re getting earful from their larger players, the ones most affected when the Senate took a Crapo on gamblers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"699\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/about_dina_titus.jpg?resize=699%2C559&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-850663\" style=\"width:369px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/about_dina_titus.jpg?w=699&amp;ssl=1 699w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/about_dina_titus.jpg?resize=300%2C240&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/shop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/about_dina_titus.jpg?resize=445%2C356&amp;ssl=1 445w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 699px) 100vw, 699px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It seems improbable in the extreme that Congress, an unambitious bunch, will take action before the tax increase goes into effect on New Year&#8217;s Day. But Rep. <strong>Dina Titus<\/strong> (D, <em>above<\/em>) still hopes to get her bill before the <strong>Ways &amp; Means Committee<\/strong> (the  pressure point for Big Gaming). In the upper chamber, Sen. <strong>Ted Cruz<\/strong> (R) has been peeled off from the majority, joining Sens. <strong>Catherine Cortez Masto<\/strong> (D) and <strong>Jackie Rosen<\/strong> (D) in sponsoring a rollback of the tax. Casino takings fell 5.5% last month (and appeared to stall in neighboring <strong>Illinois<\/strong>). One fewer weekend day didn&#8217;t help. The entire northern tier got walloped. <strong>Hard Rock Northern Indiana<\/strong> fell 8% to $34.5 million, <strong>Horseshoe Hammond <\/strong>plunged 12% to $19 million, <strong>Ameristar East Chicago<\/strong> faltered 9.5% to $12 million and <strong>Blue Chip<\/strong> toppled 10% to $9.5 million. Mid-state <strong>Horseshoe Indianapolis<\/strong> slipped 3% to $23.5 million and <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Hoosier Park<\/strong> slid 8.5% to $17.5 million. <strong>Terre Haute Casino<\/strong> dipped 2% to $10 million. The lone gainer in the state was fan favorite <strong>Caesars Southern Indiana<\/strong> (<em>pictured<\/em>), which was up 6.5% to $21 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere on or near the <strong>Ohio River<\/strong>, pickings were slim. At least <strong>Belterra Resort <\/strong>was flat at $7 million. <strong>Bally&#8217;s Evansville<\/strong> was down 3% to $13.5 million. Playing out the string, <strong>Rising Star<\/strong> sank 3% to $4 million, while <strong>Hollywood Lawrenceburg <\/strong>was off 1.5% to $12 million. <strong>French Lick Casino<\/strong> plummeted 12.5% to $5.5 million. Sports betting was flat, with winnings of $69 million on slightly higher handle of $640 million, meaning a tidy 11% hold for the bookies. <strong>ESPN Bet<\/strong> bowed out with $2 million, <strong>Caesars Sportsbook<\/strong> also made $2 million, <strong>BetMGM<\/strong> did $5 million and <strong>BetRivers<\/strong> $1 million. <strong>Bet365<\/strong> scared up $3 million, whilst <strong>FanDuel<\/strong> outdueled <strong>DraftKings<\/strong>, $28 million to $22 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big Trouble Down South. <\/strong>There is an epidemic of illegal gambling in Florida, thanks to the rapid proliferation of unlawful slot arcades. Law enforcement lacks the resources to combat it, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinoreports.com\/geezers-grifters-illegal-florida-casinos\/\">the problem goes deeper than that<\/a>.
