Progress is a motive force in every city\u2014and, perhaps, the point of civilization itself. The evolution of Sin City has challenged conventional meanings and methods of forward movement since it began its modernization by embracing both nontraditional behaviors (legalized gambling, liberalized divorce laws) and sizable federal investments (Hoover Dam, Nellis Air Force Base). Through the up and down eras that followed\u2014Rat Pack, Elvis, megaresorts, housing\u00a0 <\/span>boom, housing bust, and now the Downtown Project\u2014Las Vegas has always coined its own definition of progress. In these stories and essays by some of Las Vegas\u2019 finest writers, you will see how locals weave spectacle, risk, and reward into the narratives of civic, political, financial, personal, and spiritual progress \u2026 or, sometimes, calamity.<\/p>\n

A forty-year Southern Nevadan, Scott Dickensheets\u00a0<\/strong>is the deputy editor of Nevada Public Radio\u2019s Desert Companion magazine. Before that he served as editor in chief of Las Vegas CityLife and the Las Vegas Weekly, was managing editor of Las Vegas Life magazine, and held various positions at the Las Vegas Sun, including assistant city editor, assistant features editor, and columnist. He\u2019s edited four previous anthologies of fiction and essays in the Las Vegas Writes series: Fade, Sag, Crumble; Wish You Were Here; Getting Better All the Time; and Lost & Found in Las Vegas.
