Las Vegas was built on millions of intimate unnatural disasters. Bad turns of the cards. Unlucky rolls of the dice. In both fiction and essays, this anthology extends the dynamic of unnatural disaster beyond the gambling parlors and into the streets, homes, and eccentric spaces of Las Vegas.<\/p>\n

In the nonfiction section, you\u2019ll descend into a decades-old atomic bunker, given new relevance by international hostilities; follow a foster mom as she deals with the drug-addicted bio-mother of her children; and gauge the meaning of #VegasStrong through the lens of the video game Fallout: New Vegas. <\/i><\/p>\n

The fiction is equally eclectic, taking in the Las Vegas of the past (Bugsy Siegel and Virginia Hill on the eve of the Flamingo\u2019s opening), the present (a journalist drifts into danger as he investigates an \u201caccidental\u201d disaster), and the future (an Ocean\u2019s 11<\/i>-style sci-fi romp).<\/p>\n

Together, these 11 pieces show some of the ways life in Las Vegas is shaped by things going haywire \u2014 and by how we face failures and fiascos.<\/p>\n

SCOTT DICKENSHEETS\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0is the deputy editor of Desert Companion<\/i>, the magazine of Nevada Public Radio. Before that, he edited\u00a0Las Vegas CityLife<\/i>\u00a0and the\u00a0Las Vegas Weekly<\/i>, served as managing editor of\u00a0Las Vegas Life<\/i>, and worked in a number of positions at the\u00a0Las Vegas Sun<\/i>, from assistant features editor to columnist. Prior to that, he worked as a publicist and magazine editor for the Allied Arts Council. Dickensheets has edited, co-edited, or contributed to six previous volumes of the Las Vegas Writes series, and was an assistant editor of Nevada: 150 Years in the Silver State.<\/i><\/p>\n

GEOFF SCHUMACHER<\/strong>\u00a0is the senior director of content for the Mob Museum, responsible for exhibits, artifacts, and public programs. He earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in journalism from the University of Nevada, Reno, and his master\u2019s degree in history from Arizona State University. He started his twenty-five-year career in journalism at the\u00a0Las Vegas Sun<\/i>, where he was a reporter, editorial writer, and city editor. He was the editor of\u00a0Las Vegas CityLife<\/i>\u00a0and founded and edited the\u00a0Las Vegas Mercury<\/i>. He served as director of community publications for the\u00a0Las Vegas Review-Journal\u00a0<\/i>and also wrote a weekly public affairs column for the\u00a0Review-Journal<\/i>. He culminated his newspaper career by serving as publisher of the Ames\u00a0<\/i>(Iowa)\u00a0Tribune<\/i>. Schumacher is the author of two books,\u00a0Sun, Sin & Suburbia: A History of Modern Las Vegas<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Howard Hughes: Power, Paranoia & Palace Intrigue<\/i>.
