“I believe if Dante were alive today and rewriting the ‘Inferno’ that the lowest places in hell would be reserved for those who commit cruelty to our animals and to our children.” — U.S. Attorney George Beck, announcing the arrest of 12 individuals and the rescue of 367 abused pit bulls, part of a crackdown on a dogfighting ring in Alabama and Georgia (and Mississippi). Mind you, casino gambling — even electronic bingo — is strongly forbidden in those two states. Blood sports between animals, however, appears to be A-OK with the citizenry. If these troglodytes want to secede from the Union, by all means let them go.

Please don’t hold back, tell us how you really feel about the citizens of Alabama. Being one, I can tell you that the overwhelming majority of our citizens abhor the news that a dog fighting ring has been discovered, and we wish the hands of justice give those particular troglodytes everything that is coming to them. I just wish that you hadn’t painted all the good citizens of this state with your verdict. We may call Las Vegas “Sin City”, but we don’t wish it to secede from the rest of our great country, and many of us enjoy a visit there from time to time. Nor did we paint the whole state of Virginia with a bad brush when they also discovered and brought to justice a dog-fighting ring with a well known NFL player involved. We do agree that such treatment of man’s best friends is to be totally condemned.
My apologies, Jerry. It *is* interesting that the Alabama state government puts a far higher priority — to the point of nearly invading an Indian reservation — on stamping out wholesome electronic bingo than it seems to vis-a-vis dog fighting. And the reflexive defense that rose on behalf of Michael Vick when HE got caught staging dogfights was, well, pretty darned disgusting and not a little stupefying.
