Station fixation; MGM Grand for sale (again)

Citing its own study, the Culinary Union is accusing Station Casinos of running unsafe workplaces. Sample: “Nearly one-fifth (18%) of survey respondents who have not received training in biohazards said they clean biohazards.” The study targets Boulder Station, Green Valley Ranch, Palace Station and Palms Casino Resort, which happen to be—coincidence, yes?—casinos where union elections have been held. While we find a contention such as “Over half (53%) of respondents said they have experienced violence at work (physical, verbal, and/or emotional)—80% said that their supervisor was the source of the violence” cause for concern, we wonder if this is a case of selective outrage.

Where was the Culinary when superannuated Steve Wynn was behaving like a latter-day Don Juan? Where are the investigations of unsafe working conditions at other Las Vegas? Surely they are not all pristine while Station alone is less than clean. The Culinary’s concern for employee health, mental and otherwise, seems to be limited to Station. At least the Culinary is able to cite one peer-reviewed study to back up its own findings. “I was quite disturbed to discover the high number of hazards workers are exposed to every day. The survey results indicate that management must do a better job to control hazards and prevent injuries,” expressed Sharee Lopez, a graduate student who co-authored the Culinary report. If that’s the case at Station, which is under a microscope, think what must be going on elsewhere in Sin City. Do tell.

* MGM Resorts International has set the end of the year as its deadline for selling MGM Grand, or so it has informed Wall Street. The question is, who will buy? Blackstone Group passed on it. Gaming & Leisure Properties is playing coy about future acquisitions but cousin Penn National Gaming already has the adjacent Tropicana of Las Vegas and GLPI might find the Green Monster too rich for its blood. Were Vici Properties, sibling of Caesars Entertainment, to buy the Grand things would get very interesting. MGM would surely like to monetize its various CityCenter assets but until Dubai World has its fill of Las Vegas that’s not going to happen.
