“The wagering restriction on colleges and universities within the state follows a path of interesting logic vis a vis the logic to legalize sports betting in general. The typical argument forwarded by the advocates of sports wagering suggests that making wagering legal moves it away from unsavory operators and places it within a well-regulated and protected environment. Therefore, one would argue, for a state to allow betting on colleges that are out of state implies a desire to create a safe and protected environment for the out-of-state schools—while leaving the campuses within the state subjected to potential nefarious unregulated betting entities … a funny argument, indeed.”—former California gaming regulator Richard Schuetz on the sports-betting initiative scheduled for the 2022 ballot.

Not a word from Mr. Schuetz about how this initiative gives the tribes a monopoly on sports betting, sure, it gives “racetracks” the right to take bets, but there are less than a half dozen of them in a state with 40 million residents. And Los Alamitos is likely to close. I live in the largest city, the nearest race track or tribal casinos are all a long drive away. it makes zero sense from a consumer/customer angle to create permanent conditions that make sports betting scarce in highly populated areas. Being stuck in the middle of the ongoing war between the tribes and the card clubs just sucks, the tribes own the freaking slot machine cartel, and they hurl money and insane power at any entity that dares to try and push for slots, now they want to “throw a bone” to racetracks because there are not many of them. I will be voting no for sure, if California legalizes sports betting, it has to be a compromise, not a monopoly. I would love to bet a few bucks on weekly PGA Tour tournaments, but the card clubs deserve a slice of the pie, they are inside the cities, the population centers. This is going to be an ugly fight between the tribes and the card clubs, the card clubs tax revenues literally finance the majority of the budgets in Commerce, Gardena, and Bell Gardens. The tribes want to bankrupt them by taking away the two cash cows, slot machines and sports betting… Greed is the American way…
