“Only in Massachusetts would we have a casino bill and try to build a politically correct casino. Have any of you people ever been to a casino, and [do you] understand what it takes for a casino to be successful and to draw people in?” — Massachusetts state Senate Minority Leader Richard R. Tisei, on a smoking ban imposed on Bay State casinos. Several other casino-killing amendments were voted down, including a ludicrous proposal that prospective casinos be approved by all towns and cities in a 15-mile radius. A 20% increase in the casino tax was also fought off.

It sounds like it is the opinion of the editor that non-smoking laws in casinos are a bad thing? Nonsense, it probably wouldn’t work any other way, and I’m tired of smelling like an ashtray anytime I go out to enjoy some good food.
I don’t know how I feel about banning comped drinks, though I’m amused that a trans fat ban was talked about like the height of liberal elitism. I’m trying to cut down on them myself, since I’m doing plenty of damage to my body with my picky selective diet even without gulping down a bunch of heart-stopping preservatives.
Smoking bans are quantifiably bad for casinos’ financial health: Just look at Illinois where revenues have fallen precipitously. I can’t stand the smell of cigarettes and cheap cigars are more noxious still but gamblers love to light up, whatever the reason. I have no opinion on trans fats but it’ll be a cold day in Hell when somebody gets a buzz off a comped casino drink. I believe the booze quotient would fit into a thimble.
David,
I can get quite a buzz off comped beers, and they don’t mess with the alcohol content.
