Herewith my — hopefully — last words on the subject of Cirque du Soleil‘s Viva Elvis, by way of Wizard of Vegas.com. As to the gaping fissure between national and local opinion-makers (myself included), I’ve given it a moderate amount of thought and am stumped for an answer.
My best conjecture is that when seven Cirque shows are simultaneously holding the boards on the Strip (to say nothing of son-of-Cirque creations like Le Reve), someone who is exposed to heavy doses of Cirque might have a more déja vu reaction to Viva Elvis. But something about that theory still feels inadequate. Having seen Zumanity once, and Ka and Mystere twice each, Viva Elvis seems like a minor, take-the-money-and-run job by comparison … but when you have seven concurrent shows with only one of them being an out-and-out dog and one getting an equivocal reception, Cirque owns an enviable batting average, no doubt about it.

I’m with you, we saw Viva Elvis in previews and it was ridiculously not good. They should have paid us to sit through it.
And this is from a BIG Cirque fan (Mystere still my fave)
On trip last week, in TI walkway from Fashion show, they were handing out 2for1 coupons for Mystere. If that’s not a sign of where the Cirque shows are I’m not sure what is. Maybe we are closing in on some reduction, might help the newer shows a bit and possibly get the execs. to start searching out another idea that might generate some traffic. (although with the duopoly of the the strip, I’m not optimistic on that)
There’s a saturation point for everything and Cirque may have finally hit the wall in Las Vegas — a collision accelerated by the poor response to its two most recent shows, as well by as the inferior Cirque knockoffs dreamt up by Franco Dragone. (Even so, Guy Laliberté’s giddy contention that Vegas could support an infinite number of Cirque spectaculars always seemed a bit naff.)
Plus, some of those shows have been around an awfully long time now and the well of potential customers may be running dry. There was a rumor, a ways back, that “Believe” was going to be evicted from Luxor and touring Cirque shows would rotate in and out instead. It sounded like a good idea at the time but went nowhere.
Me: “as well by as” ?!?!? Earth to David!
