Neither the Las Vegas Sun nor the Las Vegas Review-Journal can be bothered to report it on their Web sites but there was a shooting in the wee hours of Friday morning at the Four Queens, downtown. After having to close the hotel rooms at Binion’s Gambling Hall, I’m sure this was just the sort of publicity follow-up owner Terry Caudill had in mind. The guy can’t catch a break.
Metal detectors at casino entrances are standard issue in Macao, where the streets used to resound with the clamor of automatic-weapons fire. After this morning’s melée and even worse incidents at both New York-New York and Harrah’s Las Vegas (to say nothing of the notorious biker-gang shootout in Laughlin), I’m beginning to think it would be more than prudent for Nevada casinos to implement similar precautions.

No thanks, I’d rather take my chances.
Exactly how much more likely are you to be shot in a casino than at a convention hall, or at a concert? No evidence that casinos are any worse.
No. That would kill business, no pun intended. With 35-40 million tourists plus all the locals, it’s very unlikely one will face gunfire.
I gotta admit I’m more afraid of getting squished by a crazed driver on LVB while I am on the sidewalk. I think that pedestrian squishing is a bigger risk than getting shot Downtown. Of course, I expect to be at risk Downtown, that’s part of the charm. True Grit, don’t ya know!!!!
Sorry- it’s impractical & counter-productive. I avoid air travel because of all the security hassles, although I have nothing to hide. Telling me that I have to go through metal detectors while I’m carrying a pocket full of quarters from one casino to another would encourage me to avoid Vegas’s hassles, too.
Yeah it would be a major burden on casinos and their customers.
As a resident of Washington, DC — which has gotta have the world’s lowest ratio of metal detectors to people — I gotta say that if they started showing up in casinos that would be a big reason to just stay home.
Dave, let’s hope it will never come to this. I do carry around change amongst other things metal (no weapons though!) on my person and don’t care to submit to such things just to go and play some VP. I’d rather stay home or go to one of the injun casinos here in Ca.
While I’m not in favor or more big brother style security. I have to say, that I think metal detectors at the entrances could be implemented very easily. People forget that it’s not like gov. building or airport metal detectors here. Night clubs and stadiums use them all the time, with no removal of anything in pockets or getting stopped for your cell phone.
For reference, we took our daughter to Disney on Ice the other day, and they had detectors at the entrance. (It’s a hardcore show, what can I say). My wife has a titanium implant in her head, for a hearing issue, and nary a beep. (she was extremely worried as it would have been the first time she had to try and explain it)
“Night clubs and stadiums use them all the time, with no removal of anything in pockets or getting stopped for your cell phone.”
– Then what’s the use of having them, other than inconveniencing patrons in the interest of providing “a sense of security”?
