High rolling

Las Vegas has its newest icon and the local media are duly wowed. The Review-Journal hauled out a stock of familiar superlatives — “stylish … trendy … hip.” The Las Vegas Sun wasn’t much more restrained. Then there was passenger Gary Simonson, from Minnesota, who was moved to channel

Alicia Bridges, saying, “I like the nightlife.” Because the Las Vegas High Roller opened with so little fanfare, lines were shorter for its maiden voyages than for the opening of Carlo’s Bakery at the Venetian, which drew a sea of humanity last night. (My wife and I took one look and fled.)

In defense of our overworked local scribes, words aren’t made for describing the High Roller experience. Watch the attached videos and decide for yourself whether it’s spectacular or vertiginous, whether it’s a must-see attraction or something you’ll skip on your next Vegas visit. Either way, congratulations to Caesars Entertainment on getting the job done and creating a record-setting engineering feat. (The prospect of people getting inebriated at 550 feet up in the air, with Caesars’ encouragement, fills one with trepidation and visions of the technicolor belch.)

Heard on the Strip: C&W songstress Shania Twain is reportedly getting phased out at Caesars Palace. Supposedly, Twain’s people have been papering the house so heavily that it’s not worth what it costs Caesars to keep presenting Twain’s show.
