If you look up “urban blight,” you’re liable to find images like these, which show the area in which Penn National Gaming wants to build its Columbus, Ohio casino. At present, the casino to be is but a bunch of rubble alongside a rail line — but neighbors are going all NIMBY on Penn. Their solicitude rings a mite hollow, given that they’re only to eager to palm off the casino on somebody else’s neighborhood … somebody whose objections might be just as valid. At least the wasteland Penn presently covets isn’t likely to put slot machines and youngsters into close contact, whereas the neighborhood group would perfectly happy to plunk the casino down at a shopping mall. Like that’s gonna go over real well.

That is one important community asset they’re fighting for there. That woman who probably wouldn’t have moved there if she knew there was a casino coming can be forgiven for having her stellar views of broken asphalt ruined–the thing that drew her to that neighborhood, I’m sure.
The problem is not that the casino wouldn’t be an improvement on the slag heap, but rather what the slag heap was originally destined to be and the gov’t funds earmarked to clean it up. By the way the “shopping mall” is in about as bad shape as the slag heap. The site is “grid locked” by the railroad and a highway and is at the end of a poorly designed cul-de-sac. It was sold to a developer to further expand downtown living options in Columbus. It IS in a district which has a new AAA ballpark and the hockey arena, so yes children may be more likely to be in the area. That’s not the main objection though.
I’m a Las Vegas fan and casino fan, but I voted against this bill in that they gave a monopoly to these operators, and they are not being placed where they’re needed most in this state. I would prefer a casino-resort setup with a hotel and golf course much like the southern Indiana casinos. There are much more depressed areas in this state where they could put “destination” resorts. Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati all have plenty of attractions. Toledo maybe not so much.
The point is there ARE better places even in Columbus for a casino. There are 2 horse tracks which have a lot of land which could be developed into a resort. Both have better road access. I work near the aforementioned “mall”. It has about 4 stores and a boxing gym. That side of town could use a boost. I read you every day, just thought you should know the story.(and there’s more)
