Battling along the Boardwalk; Supreme Court gives tribes the brush-off

While the previous record for an Atlantic City casino strike is 34 days, the showdown at Trump Taj Mahal looks like it will go the distance. Neither Local 54 of Unite-Here nor Carl Icahn shows any signs of backing down and the union is talking tough. However, the strike may hurt Icahn sooner than expected: The Taj has stopped taking hotel bookings, meaning it will have to eke out the strike on casino revenues, of which the Taj’s are some of the lowest in town. Meanwhile, Glenn Straub has done a miraculous disappearing act, although it will not be so easy to make gargantuan Revel to disappear. When last heard from, Straub was raging at the Division of Gaming Enforcement for not issuing the licenses he sought and arguing that since he was going to job the casino out to a (still unspecified) third party, he didn’t need a gaming licensing.

In the meantime, Polo North was tardy with its Casino Reinvestment Development Authority paperwork, Revel still didn’t have a new name and it’s unclear whether Continue reading

“Hundreds of dead mice were found in the kitchen of this building! If you like mice and Taj Mahalroaches, stay at the Taj Mahal!” — Unite-Here Local 54 Organizing Director Benjamin Albert taunting customers — and citing Atlantic City Health Department statistics — on the Trump Taj Mahal picket line. The Associated Press reported that business was good at the Taj, but that there were twice as many gamblers at Resorts Atlantic City. It’s an ill wind indeed that doesn’t blow somebody some good.

Strike at the Taj; Macao half-full or half-empty?

While Tropicana Entertainment managed to stave off at the very last minute a strike at its eponymous Atlantic City casino, Trump Taj Mahal was not so fortunate. In a 99% predictable outcome, roughly 1,000 Taj workers walked off their jobs early this morning. This labor action had been seen coming down the pike ever since then-CEO Bob Griffin screwed over the workforce with wage and benefit cuts. While Trop CEO Anthony Rodio was willing to revoke Griffin’s evisceration of the Taj health plan, that wasn’t enough to satisfy Local 54 of Unite-Here which called Rodio’s give-back a “shadow” of what was needed. Rodio blamed the victim, saying, “The employees of the Taj bargaining committee seem hell-bent on trying to close this property and killing the jobs and livelihood of the other Taj employees, including their own union members.” The union responds that many of its members are eking out a bare existence on Food Stamps.

Rodio could at least derive cold comfort from the fact that Local 54 leadership urged ratification of Continue reading

Vegas: Weak on Strip, robust in locals play

One less weekend and a tough comparison with last year’s Mayweather-Pacquiao charade translated into a weak May for both the Las Vegas Strip, down 12%, and Nevada slot machinecasinos in general, 4.5% off the pace. There were some sort of bright spots. Slot coin-in on the Strip was down 8% but the machines held tight, their winnings only 2% weaker than last year’s. But table wagering not only plummeted 24%, the house played very unluckily, off 20%, a number even worsened when baccarat is excluded. There was 28% less baccarat play and 18% less win.

However, the bullishness on the locals market displayed by Boyd Gaming and Station Casinos was validated by a strong locals performance, up 15%. North Las Vegas led the way, vaulting 28% upward, with Continue reading

Donald Trump, stiff; Partial labor peace in Atlantic City

One of the benefits of Donald Trump‘s current ubiquity is that it has belatedly spurred the press into debunking the myth that he was a successful casino operator in Atlantic City. A particularly damning Associated Press story connects the dots among the trump 2subcontractors who got stiffed while working on Trump Taj Mahal and reveals a system pattern, suggestive of a calculated strategy by Trump, not mere fecklessness. Heck, Trump laid it out for all to see in his book, Trump: The Art of the Deal. “You have to be very rough and very tough with most contractors or they’ll take the shirt right off your back,” he scribbled. Built on a sinkhole of high-interest, junk-bond debt, the Taj went bankrupt the year after it opened but it was the subcontractors who took it on the chin. In the bankruptcy, the contractors got a third of what they were owed, with the promise of another 50 cents on the dollar somewhere down the road, presuming their business hadn’t already been obliterated by Trump’s shortchanging of them.

A characteristic scenario was for contractors to stop being paid for finished work, but to keep at it with the enticement that a check would arrive ‘in two weeks.’ (Needless to say, it didn’t.) “Desperate for cash, contractors Continue reading

Riviera site to become a stadium?; Cordish, MGM face off in Maryland

It’s anything but certain that the [your city here] Raiders are coming to Las Vegas, but our civic leaders are moving ahead as though it were a done deal. The preferred site for sheldonadelsona Las Vegas Sands-backed stadium, on Tropicana Avenue, is looking iffier and iffier, especially since it sits uncomfortably close to a busy glide path for McCarran International Airport and the FAA could easily nip that in the bud. Interestingly, two former casino sites have come into play as fallback positions. While the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority (from whom Sands hopes to wrest the plurality of the stadium money) owns the Riviera and is busy tearing it down, LVCVA President Rossi Ralenkotter is suddenly very tractable to the idea of putting a football stadium on the site. Obviously, the value of being right on the Strip cannot be understated.

Also in play are the Rock in Rio festival grounds. Since the first Vegas outing of the festival may have been its last — and because MGM Resorts International wouldn’t Continue reading

“You might think, ‘Well, that is not going to happen to us in America. We’re not going to listen to some ridiculously haired buffoon peddling lies and nativism in the hopes of riding a protest vote into power. Well, let Britain tell you it can happen. And when it does, there are no f—-ing do-overs.” — HBO Last Week Tonight host John Oliver on the United Kingdom‘s abandonment of the European Union. Can Atlantic City withstand a strike?; Cosmo gets a complete makeover

While Atlantic City waits to see how long it takes Glenn Straub to get Revel reopened (we’re now at D-Day Plus Twelve and counting), Local 54 of Unite-Here is girding itself for a strike. It’s amassed a war chest and is talking tough. “The losses in revenue to the resorts-atlantic-citycasinos will very quickly eclipse the cost of restoring benefits and giving people a fair raise,” says the union’s Ben Begleiter. Or will it? Industry analyst Steve Norton, who’s spent a long time on the management side of the desk points out that — with four casinos having gone under — there’s a large force of potential scabs who could fill the vacated jobs, should the casinos decide to wait Unite-Here out. Also standing to lose from a strike is Atlantic City itself, which would have to detail extra police power to keep things calm on the picket line. Nor is a sudden diminution in salaries being paid to casino workers likely to help a city that is number-one in the nation for foreclosures.

Atlantic City has gone 12 years without a casino strike and it’s not clear whether Unite-Here can strike for 34 days, as it did in Continue reading

The meddlesome Adelson; Wynn Palace postponed again

“Essentially, Pechanga and its allies see no reason to compromise, even an inch,” wrote California Online Poker‘s Steve Ruddock of the intractable position of the Pechanga Sheldonand Agua Caliente tribes, and their anti-PokerStars allies (who include Sheldon Adelson, meddling in California internal affairs through his Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling PAC). Although compromise after compromise has been struck in the Assembly with the intent of bringing the Pechanga faction into the fold, the latter remains stubbornly opposed, to the point where some are wondering if the real endgame is to squelch i-gaming in California altogether for fear of being also-rans if and when the market opens up.

A recent defector from the Pechanga alliance is the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, which joins Churchill Downs as part of a growing coalition favoring online-poker legislation penned by Continue reading

Tipping point in Pennsylvania near; Cirque du NFL

“I think gaming expansion money in one form or another is necessary for this budget process to be complete,” spoke Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R). With Gov. Tom Wolf (D, right) having given way on sales-tax and income-tax increases, Tom Wolfexpanding gambling is one of the few remaining ways to close a budget shortfall. Accordingly, the House has voted to permit online betting, as well as slot routes in OTBs and airport lounges. Faced with a great hue and cry from the state’s casino industry, the House trimmed the legislation to remove a provision that would enable any bar in the state to house a slot route. So it’s a partial victory for the industry, especially if it can get to host online casinos. After the initial flurry of legislative victories in Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware, the Keystone State is the one where i-gaming has come closest to taking root. Almost every casino in Pennsylvania has lobbied for it, with the notable and predictable exception of Sands Bethlehem, an opponent.

Let’s not start counting the money yet. The House needs to vote a second time on Continue reading

NHL makes it official; Isle opens new casino

Fortunately, it looks like we won’t have to worry about our NHL-franchise-to-be playing under a cliched name like “Las Vegas Gamblers.” Says majority owner Bill Foley, Monte Carlo Theater, The Park, Arena Renderingspeaking of the league, “They’d prefer we don’t go in that direction.” Also, Foley seems pretty much set on Black Knights. A West Point grad, Foley wants to with team colors the same as those at the Point: black, gray and gold. (I have mixed feelings about this: When I lived in Minneapolis, the preferred street-gang gear was either of the Chicago White Sox or the Oakland Raiders, with their silver-on-black color schemes.) As for holding a contest to name the team, there’s not enough time. “We want to get our merchandise out in the stores as quickly as possible,” Foley told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Also-ran team names were “Las Vegas Aces” (hackneyed to the umpeenth degree), “Las Vegas Scorpions” (appropriate, particularly with Continue reading

Doing it the right way

In keeping with the aphorism that history repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce, Glenn Straub‘s fire-aim-ready attempt to reopen Revel continues to drag on, providing tropicana_havanaan object lesson in how not to open a casino. As though to shame Straub by example, the Tropicana is officially debuting $40 million worth of upgrades. The Press of Atlantic City enumerates these as “redesigned Havana Tower hotel rooms, a new high-limit slot area, the addition of a property entrance on Pacific Ave, a Luxe Hair Salon, a Corner Market, Ivan Kane’s Kiss Kiss a Go-Go, a Trop Advantage Rewards Center and five all-new multimedia light and sound shows on the Boardwalk.”

Owner Carl Icahn and CEO Anthony Rodio are doubling down on last year’s $50 makeover, refusing to rest on their laurels — which may be why Continue reading

Revel … still not open; Cautious hope for Internet gambling in Pennsylvania

Glenn Straub‘s once-bold gambit to reopen Revel has turned into an embarrassing face-plant. Perhaps rushing to market in hopes of beating Bart Blatstein‘s Showboat to the hotel traffic, Straub announced a hasty revival of Revel as a casino-hotel without securing the necessary permissions first. Last Friday, two days after his self-imposed deadline for getting Revel back in business, Straub finally got around to applying for a certificate of occupancy. As of last Thursday, the sewer lines were still blocked (they have been subsequently unplugged).“It’s the first time we cut off a casino. It’s gonna come flying out 100 miles per hour,” said a utility worker of the backed-up waste. Tomorrow, city inspectors will check out Revel’s fire-suppression infrastructure, along with its electrical and water systems. More damningly, not only does Revel have no official name at this point, it appears that Straub has hired no new workforce. Approval of elevators and escalators for use is going slowly.

He also doesn’t have a casino license and the New Jersey Casino Control Commission isn’t allowing Continue reading

Louisiana gets hammered; Three states legalize DFS

As we’ve noted before, May was hard on Midwest casino operators, nowhere more so than in Louisiana, where gambling revenue was down 13%. This marks seven months of same-store decline for the Pelican State, an exceptional slump, with the usually booming lauberge_exteriorLake Charles market taking the hardest hit, -16.5%. That led to a 19% tailspin for Pinnacle Entertainment, although although all major operators — Boyd Gaming -11%, Caesars Entertainment -10%, Gaming & Leisure Properties -15%, Isle of Capri Casinos -16% — had a rough go of it. Not only did Pinnacle’s L’Auberge du Lac ($21 million) plunge 29%, it lost primacy in Lake Charles to the Golden Nugget ($23 million, 5%), a signal victory for owner Tilman Fertitta. Also-rans in the market were Isle Grand Palais ($10 million, -16%) and Boyd’s Delta Downs ($16 million, -11%).

Caesars got to say it was No. 1 again, as Harrah’s New Orleans shrugged off a 3.5% dip to record $23 million and change for top-grossing status in the state. Elsewhere in the Big Easy, Churchill Downs actually Continue reading

Little relief for Caesars; Atlantic City braces for labor strife

It’s out of the frying pan and straight into the fire for Caesars Entertainment. Federal bankruptcy court has put a temporary halt on litigation against the casino giant, giving it IMG-20130507-00006until Aug. 29 to cut a new deal with bondholders. As far as the pesky junior ones, like Appaloosa Management‘s David Tepper are concerned, what Caesars is offering them is such a fraction of what the senior lenders and bondholders stand to collect that they’re as unlikely to settle two months hence as they were two months ago. Caesars simply can’t or won’t sweeten the pot sufficiently. Besides, it might be more lucrative to sue Caesars for the assets it pillaged from Caesars Entertainment Operating Co. Of these suspect transactions, the court’s own examiner has written: “The principal question being investigated was whether in structuring and implementing these transactions assets were removed from CEOC to the detriment of CEOC and its creditors. The simple answer to this question is ‘yes.'”

Caesars has also taken the blithe attitude that it’s no longer obligated to Continue reading
