“Atlantic City has a lot to offer visitors in addition to gambling. When the economy improves and people have more money to spend on entertainment, Atlantic City will draw more and more people interested in visiting our shops, enjoying a concert, dining in our fine restaurants and relaxing on our beach.” — Linda Kassekert, chairwoman of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission and perhaps the last person in America who actually believes that. Atlantic City didn’t get the memo 12 years ago, when it resisted Steve Wynn‘s return, and it has only shown sporadic indications of having gotten it since.

David–What is the memo?
The memo, as summarized by Don Marrandino a couple of days ago, is as follows: “We have to reinvent what what we are doing here to become more of a resort and entertainment destination.” People have been saying that for 12 years but most of the Atlantic City casinos (with a few noteworthy exceptions) have cleft to the same old same-old.
AC is a disgusting place. (Atlantic City, not Anthony Curtis)
AC is as absorbed with itself as is LV. Lack of good entertainment in both cities. AC might not be a beauty, but @ least dining options are better (quality and price) than LV. BTW Bruce why do you find AC disgusting? The neighborhood? Maybe you should check 1 to 2 blocks off of LV’s downtown.
35 miles south are the Wildwoods, which have stood the test of time, of a beach, a boardwalk and a family vacation spot. Maybe AC can find the family again and draw them to the city. Ignoring the natural attractions and the family, is biting AC big time.
Al, I’ve lived here for 5 years, and never been to a place where I was afraid to walk a block. In AC, I did. I grew up in the projects and the boarded up buildings, crack houses, vacant lots and burned out cars, all one block from the boardwalk points to the endemic failure of Atlantic City. If memory serves, their last 4 mayors have been convicted of corruption; the population is shrinking, much more rapidly than Vegas’s; and the last time I was there, (a pit-stop on a drive from DC back to Boston) the casinos were run-down. With the two big CT behemoths and PA gaming, Atlantic City needs re-invention.
Let’s face it when we consider years of self serving corporations with behaviors comparable to your typical school yard bully or local pick pocket…
Add some government puppets to the mix…
What other outcome could be expected…
The people, consisting of average employees & residents of AC are fed up!
The free ride is over…
Without them failure is inevitable…
I think it should be mandatory that an Atlantic city resident with no connections to a casino along with 2 casino employees (who work on the front lines) be appointed to every corporate board in Atlantic city (limiting an employee term to
1 year).
Alas it will never happen because Atlantic City has never been a deal that was meant to benefit everyone!
I have a feeling that the newly-approved table games in the Pennsylvania casinos could spell the end for more than one Atlantic City casino. Give me Resorts, Bally’s, Trump Marina, and the Hilton for starters, with Trump Plaza not far behind and Showboat holding on for dear life.
Personally, I’ll be curious to see what conditions will be like in PA. If they have $5 tables on offer with regularity, I see them crushing AC. You can only afford to ignore the low-rollers for so long – if we have someplace else to go, we will.
