Why would anyone want to erase History? We are after all encouraged to learn from our mistakes.
Alex: The vast majority of Confederate monuments were erected in the 1920’s and 1930’s, during the Jim Crow era… Germany does not have statues of Hitler and Goebbels in public squares. Take the statues and put them into museums, they do not belong in public space, the Confederates murdered thousands of Union prisoners of war, their cause and actions were not worthy of glorification… Nobody is trying to erase history…
I went to high school long ago when Pres Kennedy was murdered. Until this year, I never knew that 10 military bases were named after Confederate generals/leaders. Why would our military name their facilities after people that killed our soldiers? History is history, but their names need to go into a library/museum, not stay on our military facilities.
I completely agree Mike, and this was an opportunity for the President at the beginning of the protests to show that he is flexible and empathetic. It really was low hanging fruit ripe for his picking, had he agreed to re-name the bases he would have created good will, and he would be able to now say he listens when others speak. Instead he chose to fight the culture war unfortunately. I honestly had no idea Fort Bragg was named after a Confederate General, and I have read books about the Civil War…
