“Marginalized community members may fill the lower ranks of the hospitality industry, but the glass ceiling for them is set incredibly low. Few will ever say anything in public for fear of retribution, but we have noticed and frequently talk among ourselves about the fact that the upper echelons of the industry are of a very particular variety. Where are the women? The blacks? The Latinos? The Asians? The gays? The youth? Seriously, where the hell is everybody else?!”—Majestic Hospitality Group CEO Christopher Henry on prejudice in the hotel industry.

A few weeks ago there was a comment that the Las Vegas area and/or Nevada school systems ought to teach the children that they could do better things than clean casino hotel rooms. Most of the casino managers/executives spent years or decades learning the slippery slope of the casino pyramid. You can take management courses, but few people have a natural ability to manage people. Of course there are examples of people with limited education who made themselves very successful. Glenn Straub told the Press of Atlantic City that he reads at the 6th grade level, started in coal mines and auto dealerships in WV, then moved into FL real estate. His purchase of Revel Casino from bankruptcy for 4-5 cents on the dollar was followed by a clever deal that pushed a local electric power plant into bankruptcy so he could buy it. He made a handsome profit selling it to Bruce Deifek, who then failed. Very few people are qualified to run a successful casino.
