“We are no longer the nation that used to amaze the world with its visionary projects. We have become, instead, a nation whose politicians seem to compete over who can show the least vision, the least concern about the future and the greatest willingness to pander to short-term, narrow-minded selfishness.” — Nobel laureate Paul Krugman on the general reluctance to invest in American infrastructure, epitomized by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie‘s attempt to abort a commuter-rail tunnel from the Garden State to Manhattan. Christie has subsequently waffled on the matter.

Well, Obama is trying to help by proposing a $50 billion transportation infrastructure repair & rebuild investment.
It won’t go anywhere, of course. “We have become, instead, a nation whose politicians seem to compete over who can show the least vision, the least concern about the future and the greatest willingness to pander to short-term, narrow-minded selfishness.”
Indeed.
As a NJ citizen and taxpayer, I appreciate the governors caution as the tunnel project is reportedly going over budget by billions. I’m not sure why Krugman is not impressed by that. Perhaps he comes from the mindset that such projects are worth it regardless of cost and time, sorta like Boston’s big dig mess. I prefer a leader that asks hard questions and accounts for costs and time and throws his weight around (no pun on Christie) to get people serious. If that makes me narrow minded then I suppose i just don’t know myself.
